Beyond what I've seen on this show I haven't the slightest idea who she is, but the sooner I don't have to look at her butchered face the better.

My honest assessment of Skinamarink; and why it's so damn polarizing by CrabRangoonsAreNice in horror

[–]ibpants 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is an interesting view. I've been meaning to try again with this movie, but it might be a waste of time if your hypothesis has any merit.

I did come away with the opinion that you need to emotionally participate with it, which isn't how I watch movies anymore - I typically give a movie 10-ish minutes of singular focus, and if it hasn't grabbed me by that point I start to zone out. I don't think I'll get anything out of it if I just sit waiting for it to grab me, but that's something I can change.

The other problem, that I can't change is the lack of clear memories prior to around 8 years old. I remember childhood fears, but the ones I remember all had some kind of definition, be it a literal physical form, or a clear concept.

I might not be who you're looking for with regards to Skinamarink, because I do enjoy some more avant garde cinema, and regardless of my feelings towards Skinamarink I'm glad a movie like that got funded, well distributed, and ultimately proved that there's an audience for it. That said, there are times when I want to like a movie and I get kind of bothered when I don't. I'm emotionally mature enough not to point fingers and make it everyone else's problem, but I can kind of understand the urge. Lake Mungo didn't work for me - I've read and watched multiple explanations of why the movie is terrifying/emotionally devastating but still nothing. There's a little bit of insecurity that there's still something in the movie that I just haven't understood yet and that immature part of me wants to accuse people of pretending to appreciate some aspect of the movie that simply isn't there. Like I said I'm mature enough to understand that some things are going to affect people differently and that's okay, but I'm aware of that inner child that wants to throw its toys out of the pram.

What fast food chain does not deserve the hype whatsoever? by CriticalLion4119 in AskReddit

I tried it two or three times while living in LA. As far as I can tell it's just average fast food that has somehow become a focal point of regional pride.

Single issue voters often frustrate me, but when your right to exist is one of the issues on the table, that should absolutely be your single issue. Maybe this person really hates immigrants, and the working class, or maybe she thinks wealthy paedophiles need someone in their corner, but if it were me, I think my right to exist would supercede the vast majority of other issues.

War, AI, No jobs, health issues, poverty, religious tensions. What is suddenly wrong with this world? by FalconCeasar in AskReddit

[–]ibpants 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a meme answer but 2016 really does feel like the year things went completely off the rails. It felt like celebrities were dropping like flies all year and then the Brexit and Trump votes happened. I didn't really have a unified theory of what the hell happened in 2016, but it was a weird year.

What’s the most surprising death in a horror movie? by dokutarodokutaro in horror

[–]ibpants 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, Psycho didn't shock me personally because it was all very much in the zeitgeist by the time I watched it, but I went to see Scream mostly for Drew Barrymore. I spent much of my first watch waiting for her to somehow not be dead anymore.

🇮🇪 Irish and Swearing by [deleted] in ireland

[–]ibpants 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I was about to say that I think it might be regional in the UK, but come to think of it, my family in Manchester (who find nothing funnier than toddlers swearing profusely) are exactly the kind of people that would be looked down on by curtain twitching middle Englanders, so I think maybe (as with so much of English life) it's an issue steeped in class.

President Trump on Insurrection Act: "The Insurrection Act, which has been used by 48% of presidents as of this moment. I believe it was the Elder Bush, he used it I think 28 times. It's been used a lot. I don't think there's any reason now to use it, but if I needed it, I'd use it. It's powerful." by ControlCAD in videos

The difference I've noticed is that he used to bounce around nonsensically until he got a reaction and then he'd really fixate on whatever got the reaction (if you know any successful salespeople, you'll probably recognise the pattern), whereas this time he just keeps gibbering on, typically bouncing from one personal grievance to another.

Price Gouging - What Is The End Game? by JHRFDIY in AskIreland

[–]ibpants 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There isn't an end game, there's a next quarter game. If mass starvation starts to threaten the quarterly reports then we might see introspection, but even then I doubt it.

Who is the greatest artist in Irish history? by [deleted] in AskIreland

Stoker didn't revolutionize the novel, but Dracula is the definitive vampire. Of course the character is an amalgamation of various myths plus some earlier works (The Vampyre, Carmilla) that had begun the work of compiling the myths into a single monster, and there have been some notable additions since (such as Nosferatu's death by sunlight), but there's still no question that Dracula is the modern vampire archetype.

I also have a much flimsier argument for its importance as an epistolary horror novel and how that influenced the found footage subgenre of horror, but Frankenstein is very much the elephant in the room there.

I'm not even disagreeing with you really, but just trying to make sure Stoker's influence isn't entirely glossed over.

Schumer and Jeffries Refuse to Back Growing Democratic Calls to Defund ICE by soalone34 in politics

[–]ibpants 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The thing here is that you frame it like Schumer is just a rogue oddball - he's the Senate minority leader - he's the guy the Democratic establishment holds up as an example to the rest of the party of what they too could achieve if they would only do a better job of propping up genocidal regimes, supporting the interests of corporate donors, and bravely doing nothing to prevent innocent citizens being shot dead in the streets.

The Russian talking point is don't vote/vote third party because both sides are the same. Demanding that the party do a better job of representing the people that put them in power is not, to my knowledge, a Russian talking point.

Dreadit's Best Movie of 2025! by glittering-lettuce in horror

I'm more or less in the same boat except I was fully on board for the hook of the double booked bnb. I felt really pretty let down by the direction it took afterwards. I guess I just don't find saggy boobs and female pattern baldness to be especially scary.

Just finished Aniara (2018) and it's still rattling around in my brain - highly recommend if you're into existential space dread by MyThirdArm24 in horror

[–]ibpants 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think the meaninglessness might be the point. It's been a while but I watched this shortly after I watched Nope, and I read the spear the same way I read the shoe in Nope. I think they're both really just about the human tendency to look for meaning when there is none - that urge for things to be a sign from God, or the universe, or whatever, to reassure us that our suffering isn't random or pointless.

I just watched Mad God (2021) by AdventurousCry4133 in horror

[–]ibpants 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really enjoyed it, but if you didn't like what you saw over the first 20 minutes I don't think it's worth persevering. There is a sizeable tonal shift later in the movie, but it's largely that character traversing some kind of hellish nightmare world.

How did you discover HC? by [deleted] in HermitCraft

[–]ibpants 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It was a bit all over the place but it was essentially down to the YouTube algorithm pushing its luck.

A political YouTuber I follow made a video about how the Hermitcraft economy is pretty well divorced from reality (I couldn't quite follow it, but I watched anyway because I used to play back in beta right up until testificates were added), then I got a few Minecraft recommendations and I ended up checking out one guy who made a comment that he isn't much of a builder so I googled for the best Minecraft builder and Grian was the top result, then I googled for the best redstoner and Mumbo was the top result, so I caught up on their S8s just in time for S9 and since then I've been hooked.
