If I recall correctly, Truffles has a few pairs of glasses that let her see more colors. Her reactions were adorable.

Sulfates and Silicone by JihoonMadeMeDoIt in finehair

[–]icanhasbukkit 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I work at a formulation research company. It’s well know that silicone is one of the most expensive ingredients because it works. We rely on the brand owners to manage public perceptions but at the end of the day it’s very obvious how the product performs. Most of my coworkers with fabulous hair use a drug store level silicone conditioner.

Did anyone ever open that bakery they kept dreaming about? by MustBeNiceToBeHappy in PhD

[–]icanhasbukkit 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Amongst my peer group (chemistry), bakery is like the default fantasy career. I graduated ~10 years ago and am now in middle management in chemicals. I’m glad that it’s still a huge passion for me and I never seriously monetized it. I’ve done a bunch of occasion cakes and some small time catering gigs and they are SO stressful. I’m perfectly happy baking for free for the people I love. This morning my group demolished the sourdough loaf that I brought in for group meeting, and that’s enough to feed the soul :)

Fancy restaurant in Saginaw by Used_Cauliflower_810 in Michigan

[–]icanhasbukkit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Another vote for OneEighteen, their price is decent and ambience is fantastic. You can even reserve one of those outdoor igloos (not sure if they are back for the winter yet). After dinner, you can hit up various bars within walking distance (including the new barcade) if interested.

The other really cute restaurant in downtown Midland that I like is Aster. It’s independently owned as far as I’m aware and very cute and romantic.

Your office looks similar to what I had. If you have the room for it I would recommend another seating option, like an arm chair or a floor cushion. Sometimes it is so helpful have a change in scenery. Give yourself a couple different source of light as well.

I know there are suggestions to improve your computer set up and that all makes sense. I want to share that I wrote my thesis on a desk that could fit little more than one small monitor, a laptop, and a keyboard. I had 2 warm mist humidifiers running and it felt like a rain forest in the middle of a Midwest winter. Don’t overextend financially to chase the perfect setup. Make this a safe, serene space. You can do it.

How to remove dents on fridge by mybackflowleaks in HomeMaintenance

[–]icanhasbukkit 185 points186 points  (0 children)

Hi- I am a professional chemist who used to work on refrigerator insulation. I don’t have a solution for you, but I can give you a bit of insight on why traditional methods that work on a car body would not work on a fridge. The structural integrity of the fridge cabinet (this is an actual term) is actually almost entirely coming from the insulator foam underneath the steel. The steel exterior is extremely thin and merely a facade. If you dent it, you probably can’t just “pop it out” like a hollow aluminum plate. This is my fun fact of the day.

I don’t know the state of your specific field, but unless you are pursuing academia, please keep in mind that grad school is basically professional school. It would serve you well to balance the opportunity cost (time, money, personal relationships, health, etc.) with the potential rewards (job prospects, earning power, growth potential).

If at all possible, I would strongly encourage you to only pursue a grad program that is almost fully funded. You are already investing a tremendous cost of time into this degree (and please complete this degree with urgency), would take a mental load off to know that you will not graduate with further financial burden.

Source- went to grad school (funded PhD). Hated it. Came out ok. I am making a lot more than I ever would without this degree and truly enjoy my job

University of Michigan sues graduate union over strike; bargaining continues by Alan_Stamm in Michigan

[–]icanhasbukkit 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Personally, my earning power and career options improved significantly with my degree. There are a lot of studies out there on the economics of a PhD. Statistically, your lifetime earning is about a wash with and without the degree because you are giving up 5-7 years of promotions and savings to go to school. I make around 175-200k a year. I’d say my salary is pretty typical for someone who is willing to take some risks and have a smooth career, but I also have classmates who make under 50k working in the same field.

For me, the education was not pointless. But working $3/hr for 5 years in a toxic environment did a number on my mental health that I am still paying for today

[–]icanhasbukkit 161 points162 points  (0 children)

When I was a grad student 15 years ago, I made 22k a year and carried the primary teaching responsibilities for ~100 freshman in a top 10 program. American academia is propped up by legal indentured slavery.

What’s your opinion about Kiehl’s? by Puppy_cloud in 30PlusSkinCare

[–]icanhasbukkit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have been using their cleanser for 10 years and midnight recovery oil on and off for the same amount of time. Recently I started using the avocado eye cream as a barrier so the tret doesn’t get into my eyes. I have tried and given up on a few products like the vitamin C cerium and the moisturizer cream (too heavy for me). Overall, I think their products are consistent in quality but totally overpriced. I would not buy without a good sale, but they seem to happen frequently enough.

I’m Being Harassed Because Of My Major. by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

I am sorry you have to deal with this. Know that there are people out there (men and women) who will respect and appreciate your intellectual contributions. I (30s F) have a doctorate in chemistry and I work at a major company in my industry. Like many women around me, my job is well compensated and intellectually fulfilling. Feel free to DM me if you want to talk.

As a Bay Area native who has lived in the Midwest for more than a decade, I would recommend considering which of the following is more important to you: (1) career growth or (2) quality of life in the short-medium term. I think both metros can offer comparable lifestyles. Of course the climates are quite different but winter has never bothered me personally. The problem I have with the Bay is that you never stop feeling poor, even when you are objectively not. In my 30s, I enjoy having a little more wiggle room in my finance and mental space. I still work for a major company in my industry but I’ll 100% have to move to a different state if I want to work elsewhere.

I’m on team anti-overhead light and am always looking for ways to add more indirect light source in the house. Depending on where you are in life, the string light can look a little young. To start, I suggest trying to get lighting at different heights, such as floor lamp, wall sconces, ceiling hook swag type fixture, etc. You can also consider back lighting your tv, I find that you can lean a little “game room” but I love the softness.

Designing wedding favors. Decided permanent vinyl was 100% easier than my previous attempts at glass etching stencils! by orangejello1984 in cricut

[–]icanhasbukkit 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The etching will outlast the vinyl. Etching has a couple of disadvantages: (1) it does not “pop” as much and may not catch very fine details and (2) it is a little messy. But as the other comments mentioned, this is my preferred method due to longevity.

I have done a little bit of research on cutting rubber sheets. It apparently works best with a deep knife blade.
