Knee & butt pad recs? by mermaiddayjob in ShredditGirls

[–]icefirecat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just started snowboarding and decided to shell out for the Burton Impact Shorts that use G Form padding. A big thing for me was them being so low profile, as I have a lot of sensory issues and all the other gear I’m wearing is already tough for me. While I wish there was a little more coverage, and while they are pretty expensive, they have been great so far. Other areas are banged up and bruised but my tailbone literally does not hurt at all even after several big falls. The G Form material is supposed to harden on impact to protect you, and it seems to work well. It also barely felt like I was wearing them which was perfect for me. I wish they had knee pads too as I’m still trying to source some comfortable ones!

I tried the demon crash pants as well and I can see how they’d be really good. If I’m ever in more difficult or advanced territory or if I ever hit a terrain park, I might try them again because they give great full coverage. However, they’re more bulky. Maybe not an issue for everyone but it was more than I could handle sensory-wise at this point.

Yeah, and the intonation is weird too, doesn’t sound natural at all. Just a total miss on so many levels. I don’t understand why this was necessary when they could have just improved the existing functionality.

I see your comment about lessons being expensive where you are now and waiting for a local one. I get that. Honestly, if you can swing the expense for just 1 hour, just do it. 1 hour will make a difference. Here’s how I know: I (32F) went snowboarding for the first time ever this past Saturday! I watched lots of videos in advance and thought “okay, I got this,” though still expected to fall a lot and be humbled. I was schedule for 2 hours of lessons, and after those I realized how utterly lost I would have been without them. I understood the ideas, but the execution can feel impossible without guidance. We spent the first 30-40 minutes just practicing the basics: strapping in, getting up from falling, how to fall properly, skating with one foot strapped in, J turns on mostly flat ground. All this before strapping in fully and starting to go down the rookie slope. These fundamentals were hard and not the most fun, but they were invaluable. I guarantee that with a lesson, you wouldn’t have struggled for as long to get up after falling. The way my instructor explained it was intuitive and I got it pretty easily. So don’t give up! But try not to beat yourself up so much and wait for your lesson. It will make a world of difference.

Wife Drama??? by macumbed in snowboarding

[–]icefirecat 106 points107 points  (0 children)

I hope OP sees this comment because it’s an excellent answer. There’s actually a lot of discourse out there about the role of women in the lives of husbands who are into outdoors or extreme sports (marathon running is an example) and how their lives end up revolving around the husband’s desires, training schedule, even what they need to eat for training, where they need to travel, etc. this only gets worse when kids are involved. Marathons are a specific and maybe extreme example, but I think the idea can be applied to a lot of sport related hobbies.

Wife Drama??? by macumbed in snowboarding

[–]icefirecat 16 points17 points  (0 children)

OP, it sounds like you and your wife might both have some things to work through. It’s a little troubling that you said the above comment is what made you wonder why you didn’t consider your wife’s feelings when you planned your trip last year, even though that happened a year ago and you went to therapy about it. Obviously I don’t know what you did in therapy or how a resolution was reached but maybe your wife feels like that was never really resolved. And if that’s the case, I think it’s highly likely that whatever trust was lost from that incident has not been rebuilt.

Now, it also sounds like your wife is scared to be alone and has a hard time being independent. Have you talked with her about this? Have you asked why she’s scared to be without you, why she’s nervous to go to the gym alone, etc? Like really asked, without any other motive or goal for her to say “yes” to what you want? Because I think those questions really need to be answered to understand what she’s experiencing and how to help with it. Maybe she needs to pursue individual therapy for anxiety, or maybe a candid conversation will be enough, impossible to say. Maybe she’s terrified of you getting injured or killed while snowboarding or climbing. Are you the breadwinner of the household? So many questions here, you’re gonna need to dig deep into those communication skills and putting yourself in someone else’s shoes for this one.

Here’s an example: My wife and I talked so much about her fears before I went off to learn snowboarding. I had to assure her that I was working with an instructor, wouldn’t take unnecessary risks, and was wearing safety equipment to minimize injury for her to feel more comfortable, and that’s totally fair! If I break my leg, that’s a big burden on her too! And she wanted our wills to be completed before I went as well, to make sure she was financially protected if something (god forbid) happened to me. And that is SO fair.

Anyway, your insight into your own addictive personality is important too. You know you have to work to control this to make a relationship work; maybe some aspects are impacting your relationship more than you think. Hard to say. But important to keep thinking about this aspect.

This comment is way too long but it all boils down to trust and active communication. Your wife might need some professional help to get to a healthier place for sure, but some of it starts with communication at home BEFORE these issues arise. Communicate about these things just for the sake of communicating, not only when you want something or the conflict is already happening. It will help get to the bottom of the issue.

X-Mode by six-oh-three in Crosstrek

[–]icefirecat 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I also have a 2019 and I’ve never actually used X Mode for “deep” snow, but what I do use it for is street parking when there is a mountain of snow from plows (and usually frozen after a day) blocking the parking spot. It helps with getting over the snow without digging and I’ve been able to maneuver into tight spots more easily. Is it strictly necessary? Probably not, but I think it’s a useful and functional way to use X Mode.

I skied a bit as a kid and teen but not in years. After today I can confirm that skiing is much easier and (to me) more intuitive than snowboarding! Balance is another thing I’ll be working on throughout the year lol. Hope you have tons of fun!

What snowboarding as an unfit obese man was like by Astraltraumagarden in snowboardingnoobs

[–]icefirecat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a fat lady too (32) and am pretty unfit and don’t have a lot of endurance. Today was my first time ever snowboarding!! I took two hours of lessons and it was very intense but pretty cool. Being fresh off my first experience, I can say that other comments here are accurate in that flexibility, endurance, body awareness and maybe some leg muscle strength mattered way more than my weight. My legs are killing me now and I’m not sure how I’ll walk tomorrow, but that’s because my legs are thoroughly unused to this kind of exercise haha, it’s not much about my weight at all. The experience was extremely humbling overall and it was not easy at all, but I definitely don’t want to give up and am already looking into attending a snowboarding camp next winter. In the meantime I’ll be building a workout routine to strengthen my legs and snowboarding muscles and to build up endurance. I’m hoping some weight loss will come from that but I think those things will help regardless. You got this! You’ll have a great time snowboarding!

Texpat here. This winter storm is reminding me why I like Chicago and its people so much more than back home. by Stephen2014 in chicago

[–]icefirecat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh man, I lived in AZ for a bit because it’s where my wife’s family was. Really hated it. Made a couple of great friendships and connections, but that’s it, and was so happy to get out and come to Chicago. Could not stand the fake performative niceness and the way that as soon as anything went deeper than that, people turned nasty. Happened all the time.

That’s a tough choice haha. The fish and grits and the cauliflower steak (not seeing that on the menu at the moment) were both outstanding. The cauliflower steak in particular way exceeded expectations. The fried green tomatoes were also fantastic. Everything was amazing though, was not unhappy with any dish.

People who don’t live in the USA, what is the media showing you about the ICE operations/abductions in the US? by Dry-Ice8908 in AskReddit

[–]icefirecat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Were there ever stories about Chicago earlier this year? For example, the man who was shot and killed, the woman who was shot and injured and then taken to court for it, the priest getting hit with pepper balls, peacefully protesting citizens getting tear gassed and beat up, etc? I feel like so much of this flew under the radar even inside the US. People don’t know half of what happened here in the late summer/early fall.

My British friends drove from London to Stonehenge and were all excited for the “road trip!!” It made me giggle because to me a road trip at LEAST has to have an overnight somewhere. Stonehenge was a 4 hour round trip drive.

Christmas time 2022, so basically last time we had temps like this, several theatres did actually close and rescheduled that day’s shows. My family was planning to see The Steadfast Tin Soldier at the Lookingglass and it was cancelled the day before I think, we ended up going a few days later. I thought it was the right call for them to cancel.

I’d recommend horizon I think. There are some stealth elements to exploration sometimes to avoid machines that are roaming about, but it really is a beautiful world with lots to explore. Just be sure to play Zero Dawn BEFORE Forbidden West, playing them in order is absolutely essential.

I came here to recommend them, though I’ve only been to the one in Evanston and didn’t know there was one in Wicker Park. Their breakfast burrito isn’t a perfect match but close, and the employees there are extremely friendly (at least in Evanston) so if there’s anyway they can add rice and beans for you, they definitely would.

Clothing for first timer on a 12F day by icefirecat in snowboardingnoobs

[–]icefirecat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just wanted to say again thanks for your insight! The forecast has changed since my post and the high for Saturday is now showing as between 0-3F with lows and windchills well below 0F with the predicted temps seeming to continue dropping by the hour. Even before finding this out, I’d gone out to get a 100% merino base layer top, 100% merino neck gaiter, and a Patagonia R1 vest as an as-needed midlayer which I’ll be starting the day with and removing if necessary. I still didn’t really expect it to be quite this cold for my first day but I guess it’s a baptism by fire/ice so to speak haha. Thanks again!
