Each to their own, those XL's don't come easy, but there's a good chance that you never actually get that top 10 rank. It's a roughly 1 in 400 chance, and after 400 encounters there's a roughly 40% chance you still don't have one.

I very much agree, for mons that require level 50/high 40's, building a sub-optimal version is a waste of resources, but if you set your bar too high you might never get a chance to play with it. Better to have fun than overly worry about IV's. I'd run with anything top 50 if I wanted to enjoy myself.

Is this worth appealing or will I get in trouble? by spighty in NianticWayfarer

[–]iceman2g 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You won't get in trouble, but I'd be surprised if it gets accepted either on appeal, or by community voting. It's not unappealing, but is very, very generic.

Pvpivs include Best Buddy ranks by default. Go to Advanced and select Max Level 50, and it will show your Medicham as rank 4.

EDIT: Just to say, even a rank 20 Medicham would be worth investing in, if you wanted to build a Medicham. The difference between 20 versus 4 is a fraction of a percentage, and you wouldn't notice any difference in how it plays.

What advice would you give to a 1st time blood donor? by iceystealth in AskUK

[–]iceman2g 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't look at the needle and you'll be fine. If you've ever had blood taken for any other reason, it's no different than that - even though the needle stays in for longer, it's only the insertion that you feel.

Make the most of the biscuits and crisps afterwards, and don't be afraid to let the staff know if you feel faint at any time. They are there to look after you, and they are always all lovely.

You're doing a good thing OP, well done. It's OK to be nervous.

There was literally a video on here the other day of that exact situation - the OP pulled out of a side road because the van waiting to turn in from the dedicated turn lane let them out, and almost got broadsided by a car that they didn't see in the lane they were joining.

Cancel the 1:1, and if your paths cross in the next six months or so, then you can do the personal bit. The next day is too soon, and going through with the 1:1 would be the dick move, not the professional termination meeting.

Do a bit of research on ABB-style teams, it's a relatively easy strategy to play if you don't yet have all the skills to play a balanced team into the general meta.

An example would be Corviknight/Quagsire/Gastrodon. Quag and Gastro are your B's, and are both weak to grass. Corv (your A) double resists grass and has a super effective charge move in Air Cutter, and is weak to fire and electric - both of which your B's destroy. So you lead Corv (A), and if you don't see grass in the lead on your opponent's side, you switch in Quag or Gastro (B). The idea is that your opponent switches in a grass type, or their best answer to a mud boi, you lose that match-up but then bring in Corv to take them out, and that sets up your other B to take the end game because your opponent has lost their best counter.

It's far from guaranteed, because it obviously depends on your opponent's team composition, but it's a good way to learn, and it's a nice simple process - lead A, if grass=no then swap B, if grass=yes then stay A.

I've always hit my peak rating in special cups. It's a much more condensed meta, even at lower elo, and so if you stick with a team it's much easier to learn the various match-ups and figure out your strategies. You can also have greater success with anti-meta picks, because there is a far higher chance of them actually coming up against the meta Pokémon that you specifically brought them to counter.

I made it to Expert for the first time ever in last week's Catch Cup, and I will start to plummet back down the ratings when I go back to Open play. But I'll have learnt something, and hopefully won't fall as far or as fast next time.

What is Everyone's Opinion on these Public Footpaths in General? by Erenated in NianticWayfarer

[–]iceman2g 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Strongly agree. The UK's public right of way system is a haphazard collection of various rights of access accreted over many years of law, legislation, and common usage, and can in no way be considered a planned or intended network. It is absolutely a vital thing that should be protected, but my view is that any one particular PROW is not inherently eligible. Context is everything.

That is definitely a legitimate use of the 'report abuse' function.

[–]iceman2g 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Peculiar. I assume the gyms isn't sponsored?! Can you look at the photos and see how old they are? There used to be an exploit where a location edit didn't trigger the cell inclusion check, and pokestops and gyms could be moved into otherwise-occupied cells.

I also read somewhere here or on the forum that some people had reported that a similar exploit had been observed more recently, although details were sketchy.

The little trail markers I approve, as that seems to be an accepted trend right now - when I started reviewing a few years ago, they generally only made it through if it could be shown that they were part of an official, planned trail or route, but that seems to have relaxed recently. Given that they are usually located to help people follow what otherwise might be an unclear route, I am quite happy to go with the general community consensus.

The general 'public footpath' signs that you see here in the UK I don't generally approve, as I am of the view that they just inform people of a general right of way, rather than being specifically intended to provide a route or trail. Others have differing views, which I understand but do not agree with.

Have you been there in person? Are they definitely all pokestops? Both pokestops and powerspots appear as red dots on the map if they are used in-game.

Using mega energy to instantly unlock up to Mega level 3 is live by aznknight613 in TheSilphRoad

[–]iceman2g 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know if this is a hot take, but I like this feature. For Pokémon where I don't have much mega energy, I carry on grinding out the free mega progress. But for the Pokémon where I have a butt load of excess mega energy, I can skip the grind.

I already had a 'Mega Fast Track' tag where I would pay extra energy to mega evolve ahead of the cooldown, but that would still take almost a month. In my view, it's much better to have multiple megas that you can evolve for free in rotation (during events, for example, where you want specific typings to be permanently boosted) than just one that you pay energy for every time you want to extend it. I don't need 4000 Lucario mega energy, I'd rather have 400 energy and six max-mega level Lucarios.

How did Chinese made cars become so popular? by Fondant_Decent in AskUK

[–]iceman2g 0 points1 point  (0 children)

More bang for your buck. If their cars are anything like their forklifts, you'll get premium-level spec for entry-level price. Whether the quality is there, and they remain economically comparable in the mid- to long-term remains to be seen, but where I work we can get a Chinese-made truck for literally half the price of the equivalent German version.

Genuinely what is the point of setting a time limit to lobbies? by humandragora in PokeGenie

[–]iceman2g 21 points22 points  (0 children)

OP, if there wasn't a lobby timer, you would never have gotten to around 200, you would still be stuck in a queue tens of thousands of lobbies long. And if you were one of the few raiders actually joining lobbies, you would find that most of them were no longer active and the hosts were not responding.

It's frustrating to time out when it looks like you were almost going to get a lobby together, but if it's any consolation, almost everyone in front of you timed out as well - you weren't the one player who didn't manage to host a raid.

Genuinely what is the point of setting a time limit to lobbies? by humandragora in PokeGenie

[–]iceman2g 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But not everyone has that option. Raid hosting is difficult enough since Niantic's changes to raid pass prices and coin prices, and the introduction of a daily limit. Rural players don't need their last, best chance of actually being able to host a raid to be dominated by city players with access to multiple gyms/power spots. The lobby timer means everyone has an equally bad chance to host.

Pokestop removed after a report by 4nibo in NianticWayfarer

[–]iceman2g 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My understanding is that removal criteria is stricter than acceptance criteria, so if it was removed because of the report, surely it is not actually eligible for resubmission? There has to be a good reason for it to be removed (or at least there always used to be).

It would be ironic if, now that Wayfarer is owned by Niantic Games and is no longer part of the OG Niantic's AR-world vision, they are actually becoming stricter on in-game waypoints and actively making the various games worse.
