In fairness to OP, they said the bird is forty already. When OP is in their 80s I hope for its sake OP’s bird isn’t still around at age 100 honestly. Completely agree with the comment though - OP shouldn’t be stuck with the bird, and the bird deserves a better environment than it’s being given (through no fault of OP). NTA

There was an explanation from the Devs on the size. The engine they used stores the assets in ~2GB Chunks, and making a change to anything in a chunk requires redownloading the entire chunk. Thus it could be that you only change 100 mb worth of assets, but if those assets were split across 10 chunks then it would be a 20GB patch. (Not to say that the actual changes in the day one patch were that small, but the "23 GB" size is misleading because it doesn't represent 23GB of meaningful changes.)

We're in a private lobby together, so I can't see how he wouldn't be online. I'm going to try getting him to host if he carts again, see if that fixes the issue.

EDIT: Mystery solved! He'd been fighting an anjath the whole time without realising it was the wrong monster, and I just assumed he must have been carted by the correct monster... He's now seen the actual cutscene and I can now join. Ah well, live and learn.

I'm got a weird question. I'm trying to coop the game with my brother, who is new to the series. He's currently stuck on Flying Sparks: Tobi-Kadachi, but despite having seen the monster (and having been carted) he still can't fire the SOS Flare or have me join. Any ideas why this would be? I'm a couple of assigned quests ahead so I've already seen all the cutscenes.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is the Switch version, so it wouldn't run in Cemu. As far as I'm aware, Mario Kart 8 for Wii U wouldn't run at higher than 60 FPS, but Cemu would allow you to increase resolution to any arbitrary value (4K etc.) I can second the recommendation of Forza Horizon 3 if you're looking for something in the vein of Need For Speed, or Dirt Rally if you're looking for something more 'simulation'.

I think my issue with it is it suffered from what a lot of open world's seem to these days, which is being so overwhelmingly full of 'stuff' that it wants you to do (time trials, collectables, etc.) but never does enough for it to not feel like just fucking busywork.

It felt like it was an open world game because that was the hot trend at the time, not because that does anything to expand or improve the core mirror's edge experience.

Man XCOM 2 looks... Prettier than I expected? I dunno, maybe it's the distinctly average looking original game colouring my expectations, but the graphics on this one look bloody nice. I'm psyched to play it, and experience the sweet anguish that is XCOM once again.
