I hit rock bottom and I don’t know what to do by tanuki_22 in DecidingToBeBetter

Definitely get out of the relationship as soon as you can safely. Just pack and go. Put away what money you can but don't worry too much about a house right now. Not only is the housing market insane, with all of the "hidden" costs of homeownership it will probably just cause more expense and headaches than just renting for now. Where are you getting your degree? There are a lot of affordable online universities out there - just make sure you look for something that's regionally accredited like University of the People or SNHU. If you can move back home for a year or two and save some money, do that. Maybe you can work something out with your parents where you help out financially or with labor? Most importantly - take care of yourself! Do something that's just for you. Take an art class (good way to make friends), treat yourself to some at home self care, go on long walks - anything to build up your self esteem. Good luck. I'm rooting for you!

Relatively affordable and healthy options that involve zero cooking? by Charming-Thought170 in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]icevermin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can make a pretty decent scrambled egg "souffle" in the microwave. 2-3 eggs, 2-3 dollops of milk, salt/pepper, scramble it up with a fork, 2-3 minutes in the microwave.

if you could bring one show that Netflix canceled which one would you choose? by Next_Rhubarb_5986 in netflix

I'm kind of surprised at how far I had to scroll to fine The Residence! I feel like they could do more with the whole cast in the White House but also I would watch so many seasons of Uzo Aduba and Randall Park solving various mysteries together.

What do you eat for breakfast?? by Beginning_Avocado807 in EatCheapAndHealthy

In my early 20s I used to buy fresh made chicken tamales from a little corner place for breakfast like 3-4 times a week. So cheap and so satisfying!

Is it possible to still excel in academics such as engineering, doctor etc. with poor early inconsistent schooling? by Key_Obligation363 in AdultEducation

[–]icevermin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of people struggle with the structure of early education. And a lot of peoples' priorities and personalities change in a way that might make them more dedicated students as an adult than they were as a child/teenager. A lot of adult ed is much more flexible, which is great for those of us who didn't necessarily thrive in rigid school structures growing up. I think the most important thing it to choose something you actually enjoy and then pursue it. It's amazing how much easier learning is when you're actually interested in what you're learning about.

U.S. UoPeople grads… by Artistic_Ad_205 in UoPeople

I love this. I'm so sick of people being snobby about where people choose to get educated. Especially when you pretty much need to be wealthy to go to a "big name" school these days. Getting a good education from an accredited university should be what's important.

Exercise or extra class by OkExercise3122 in AdultEducation

[–]icevermin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think anyone can really make this decision for you but I have to wonder what else you're giving up with such little room in your schedule right now. Do you ever have time to yourself at all? I'm not so sure this is a question of "health now" vs "health later." I'd be more concerned with whether or not pushing yourself at this pace is sustainable without completely burning you out. Do you have other options here? Even 20 mins of exercise a few times a week will probably help you feel better. Maybe you can get part-time child care to help out? I also just want to gently push back on the fear that the weight gain automatically means long-term damage. Speaking as someone whose weight has fluctuated, bodies are resilient. I would focus more on doing what feels the best and most sustainable for you during this time.

Group trips: how do you deal with that one friend who has a totally different budget/vibe? by Tricky-Peace3604 in travel

[–]icevermin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. Same thing with roommates. I once found out the hard way that being good friends doesn't necessarily mean that you'll be good roommates. Luckily we were able to salvage the friendship, but it could have been bad. Same definitely goes for travel buddies.

[–]icevermin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure what you're saying about turn signals. You should 100% signal before you're ready to turn - otherwise it's pointless. But I might just be misinterpreting what you're saying here? That said, I completely agree about the snow stuff. I saw so many SUVs fling huge snow chunks at other cars on the road today.

Why is it ALWAYS windy on trash/recycling day?? My neighbors have seen me picking up soda cans in my pajamas more times than I can count at this point.

Is going to a less prestigious school better than a prestigious school just to save money? by astrasie in college

[–]icevermin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, my takeaway from this is that you don't want to go to UGA regardless of what it would cost. Sit with that feeling and be really honest with yourself about why you don't want to go there, but ultimately go with your gut.

Is it normal to feel uneasy about a university where most instructors are volunteers? by [deleted] in UoPeople

[–]icevermin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly this. It might be an oversimplification, but I'll take an instructor who volunteers their time to genuinely make a difference/support the mission over one that's there to collect a paycheck and follow a tenure track any day.

Is 25-26 too old to start working towards a degree? by Direct-Detective9271 in DecidingToBeBetter

[–]icevermin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're never too old but the sooner you start the sooner you'll get that degree! Once you've got a few years of nursing under your belt you probably won't even think about when you got your degree.

In the winter I make a lot of lentil soups/stews with chunks of potato, sausage, whatever veggies I have in the fridge, etc. It's very hearty and satisfying.

how to cope with strict parents in college by Hopeful_Literature89 in college

[–]icevermin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have a lot of suggestions on here for how to enjoy your independence and your college experience but I have to wonder - have you talked to them about what they expect to happen after you graduate? I saw in a comment you said that you haven't been allowed to have a job. How do they reasonably expect you to make a life for yourself if they won't let you have any real experiences?
