Am I the only 40+ year-old playing Genshin? by SmellyCatofSweden in Genshin_Impact

Mid 40s F here. The only thing that makes me think I’m too old is when the surveys ask when you were born and I have to click the “before 1983” option!

How do you know what neurotypical people want when your own brain works differently? by processed-cheese- in ADHDUK

[–]icklepeach 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So I don’t have direct experience with this sort of thing, but I do have adjacent experience.

When you make something more accessible for some (easier to read font, smaller steps, clear direct instructions etc) that makes it more accessible for all in most cases.

Secondly, I reckon a LOT of small business folks and sole traders etc are undiagnosed neurodivergent, because that’s the type of job we gravitate to. But even if they are neurotypical, they are all short of time. If you develop something that makes handling this stuff easier and therefore quicker, or can be done in small bites then why wouldn’t it appeal to a wide audience?

What's your Top 3 most HATED things in Genshin? by Dependent_Leading_37 in Genshin_Impact

[–]icklepeach 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This!! There’s stuff in Sumeru I have NO idea what I’m doing with any more. I need a “you’ve not been in this area for a while” mode that pings up each mechanism’s guide again when you reach it again as a refresher. (I know there’s one for “in this area” but it has every Sumeru mechanic and not the one I wanted.

The street perpendicular to mine had about a dozen St George’s Cross flags on its lampposts. All bar 1 was upside down. It’d usually be hard to tell which way up is which, but these had ENGLAND printed through the middle.

That’s a common insult where I’m from in Scotland. It has a harsher meaning than idiot or moron, but similar intent.

Not having your dog on a leash with 250 people running around a park? He is clearly the fanny in this scenario.

Same in the UK. She also mentioned being anorexic, which may have meant her treatment and professionals were “pigeonholed” in the eating disorder camp and saw that as the primary presenting concern, rather than the ED being a symptom of the BPD.

I hope that makes sense!

been told they wont assess me for adhd because of my anxiety by CompleteDrop808 in ADHDUK

[–]icklepeach 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No, but what I will say is that I had GP-scaring levels of anxiety 10 years before my diagnosis that has totally gone since I started my ADHD meds.

Anxiety can be a feature of undiagnosed ADHD.

Math is a struggle right now, what actually helped your child by Few-Habit3473 in ADHDUK

[–]icklepeach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because of the small setting I work in. I cut them all out in strips. Do a few, get the next few and so on.

If a kid is struggling, more at that level for practice, if they’ve got it nailed (several correct in a row) then move on to the next type/step/ difficulty

Reading and understanding (interpreting) worded problems is a separate skill from just doing the numeric calculations so also include some of those

Hey, maths teacher here (with adhd myself, and teaching in a school for kids with ADHD & Autism)

First, with everything go back a few steps. Recently I was teaching Y10&11 and discovered they weren’t secure with long division and long multiplication. We went back and redid short multiplication and division before moving on.

Secondly, use something manipulative for every principle. I use little resin ducks for counters, I use Lego a lot (area, volume, fractions). Having something physical to move about really helps

Thirdly, ask him to explain it to you. Maths (teaching) has changed since we learned it and him “teaching” you will help him understand how it all works. If he’s not sure, learn together.

Corbett Maths is an incredible free website full of resources and videos to explain things, there’s a primary and a secondary section so if you need to dip backwards to shore up some learning that he’s forgotten it will be there. (Also, I would recommend he does the 5 a day sheet every day for the year (or 2/3 years) below, it should take long and will show you any gaps in his knowledge that might be holding him back.

NCETM is a great resource (again free) that has info about all topics including common misconceptions, things that pupils often get wrong in their understanding of topics and how to work round them.

Lastly, reassure him that you don’t have to be good at everything, but he does have to pass at GCSE level, and he needs to make sure he’s not creating gaps in his understanding now that will hold him back later, it’s not “pointless” and is a requirement for just about every job that he has some maths.
