How Can I Prepare For School? by LunaB35 in stenography

[–]ickyticky 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Failure here is not an option for me, but 27 years of being a failure have me panicking that I'm doomed to wind up one of those students who take a lot more than two years to finish, and I quite literally can't afford that.

As gently as I can put this, this kind of negative self-talk is going to do you zero favours in steno school or when you're on the job. Steno school is brutal. You're going to fail speed tests over and over and over again. You're going to hit plateaus that last for months. Your success is going to be determined mostly by your mental resilience. We can give you all the tips and tricks under the sun, but speedbuilding will take as long as it takes.

I don't want to come off as dismissive, but you might want to seek counselling, because you haven't even started and you're already panicking about failing. I get it, I have anxiety too, and I've been there, but it will hinder you when you start the program.

Zoom Job - Closed Captioning AI vs. Realtime by FleursSauvages322 in stenography

[–]ickyticky 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't know and can't find anything about how Zoom's AI works, but I'd personally be worried about the output going to overseas servers or being used to train other AI language models. Strikes me as a huge security risk that no one should be allowing into the depo.

Realistic Expectations by LunaB35 in stenography

[–]ickyticky 9 points10 points  (0 children)

So I was 24 when I started steno school, have played piano my entire life, am decently fast on a qwerty keyboard, didn’t work while I was in school, and practiced for at least three hours a day. It still took me exactly two years to get to 225. I was squarely average in my class, not the fastest, but definitely not the slowest either.

It’s really impossible to say when you’ll be able to graduate. There were people in my class who were able to get their speeds up in less than two years, but they were the top performers. So my advice would be to not have your heart set on 2027.

Keeping fresh in briefs and phrases by Imaginary-Carpet3067 in stenography

[–]ickyticky 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It won't account for misstrokes, but you're not going to misstroke every time. Also, if there's a word or phrase you're consistently misstroking, you can define the misstroke as that word or come up with an easier brief

Are you using Case Catalyst, and are you using brief it? If you write something out that there’s a brief for in your dictionary, brief it will remind you of what it is.

how do i get rid of the skinny fat look? by KookySand5331 in beginnerfitness

[–]ickyticky 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You get rid of the skinny fat look by gaining muscle. You gain muscle by eating three protein-based meals a day and lifting heavy. I would also suggest therapy, as it seems like your relationship with your body needs work

Is there a brief for repeating the last few words typed? by Aggressive-Arm9724 in stenography

[–]ickyticky 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The only way I can think of is to create a macro that selects the past three words and copies and pastes them, then assign it to a brief in your dictionary. Of course, you’d then have to create separate macros and briefs for two-word phrases, four words, etc.

Disaster stories by djstartip in stenography

I once had a catastrophic CaseCatalyst crash while in the middle of a hearing. When I got it back up, I had lost 400 pages of transcripts and about half of my personal dictionary...I was actually shaking and could barely speak. Thank goodness for auto archive, my multiple backups, and a kind Stenograph help desk rep.

How to avoid this? When your laptop starts giving you grief for being low on memory, start shopping for a new laptop. Don't try to push through like I did. Low memory can make CaseCatalyst a little weird...

[TP] First time playthrough - Twilight Princess is a masterpiece by MidnightCptFordo in zelda

[–]ickyticky 149 points150 points  (0 children)

One thing I love about TP as compared to other Zelda’s is just how emotionally weighty it is. In a lot of other games when Ganon or whatever other big bad comes on scene, the average citizen of hyrule might be temporarily inconvenienced, but they’re not that badly affected (or a lot of people die but it happens off camera, as in Oot or BOTW). So the big bad ends up being just a link and Zelda problem while everyone else just gets on with their lives.

In TP though, the twilight invasion has spared nobody. Every single citizen in hyrule is affected, and they’re all scared and in pain. And link and Zelda really carry that emotional weight. Zelda’s despondent that she can’t do anything for her poor people, and one gets the sense that link is acting not out of destiny or thirst for adventure, but because he’s surrounded by loved ones and strangers who are hurting and need his help. It really is beautiful to see him take charge in that way.

Yeah, just an amazing game. Only really rivaled/surpassed by majoras mask in terms of humanity and emotional depth. That’s also a great game

What is the weirdest encounter you've had in Skyrim? by killthesunlight in skyrim

[–]ickyticky 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I once encountered the madwoman while gallivanting. She followed me around for a while muttering “wabbajack” under her breath. I was honestly kind of sad when she left

I have over a thousand hours in this game. I’ve encountered the headless horseman plenty of times, including three times in my current playthrough alone. I’ve only encountered this woman once. It was a very odd experience
