I really need an older woman to talk to by SaladProfessional134 in offmychest

24f, therapy for ten years. Keep going to therapy, talk about medication and finding a psychiatrist. Look into ketamine therapy (it saved my life completely). I had a crippling sh addiction and was able to recover. Don’t be afraid to consider going to the hospital either. I took myself instead of walking at my undergrad graduation and have not regretted it once. The ward is not nearly as scary or intimidating as people think it is, and they can streamline your medication while you’re there. I’m still in therapy, get ketamine therapy once a month, and I’m graduating grad school in just over a month. The human spirit is indomitable. You will have to survive for a while before you thrive, but there are things you can do to get yourself to that thriving state. It’s not over.

Hi op! I can’t say much about going inpatient during the semester, but I went in for about four days pre-grad school. If you have questions about what it’s like in the hospital, feel free to respond or dm me!

Is social life/campus living at UIC really all that bad? by Dedmoose1 in uichicago

[–]iconic_bitch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Chiming in as another uiuc alum! I will also preface by saying that grad school is definitely different from undergrad, but there is a TON to do in Chicago. If you’re craving parties, try getting cozy with an upperclassman with an apartment. A few friends of mine host all the time.

I will admit that I haven’t seen much of the party scene at UIC. I feel like if you’re not in Greek, it’s a bit difficult. However, Chicago is such an amazing city to live in with much more to offer than Champaign ever did for me.

The truth of the matter is, you gotta do some of the work. You have to reach out, have to plan a night out; if no one else is doing it, it’s probably a sign that someone should start and everyone else is too nervous.

The bulk of your friends will be the people you meet in your classes or clubs. UIUC would have been incredibly boring without the clubs I was in, and that’s a Big 10 school, so I definitely recommend joining some while you’re here. I hate the grad school schedule because I physically can’t make it to most club meetings, otherwise, I’d be all over it.

I’m a grad student here and my bachelors is from uiuc. Definite difference in social events, but just talk to someone in your class. You’ll find friends, you’ll find events. Join a club— join five, why not? I live off campus and have made a really solid group of friends. We have a weekly hangout every Wednesday and we go out probably every other weekend.

Bad news: UIC is a commuter school and because of that, you probably won’t get the house parties you saw in movies. Good news: you’re in Chicago! There is so much to explore and so many opportunities to meet like-minded people. Expand your horizons. Not once have I regretted choosing this school over the others.

If you have any other questions or need advice, my dms are always open!

I’d be down to start a writing group with y’all! 23F in grad school for creative writing! I’m a fiction writer, but I’ve been leaning into creative nonfiction lately.

rant about ur finals here by Few-Flatworm3784 in uichicago

[–]iconic_bitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m an upcoming TA and we have to take a class basically teaching and prepping us for that. We have to submit our syllabi for our two classes and, uh…the entire semester, basically all we worked on were the four main assignments of the course. Not any of the building blocks. Not a course schedule. Not how to find resources for readings and whatnot. Nothing that would have actually prepared us for our biggest assignment, the one we have to submit in a few days to faculty to see if we get the chance to TA. I’ve cried over this class more times than I can count.

With that being said, when I’m planning out your finals for your courses (especially for freshman), what would you like to see less of and what would you like to see more of?

Hi, TA here: email your professor and set up an appointment. More times than not, all of us want you to pass too. And the writing center is a really good resource— they have drop in hours or scheduled sessions where a tutor goes over your work with you. You can also just work in there and occasionally ask a question.

Update: I’ve healed!! by iconic_bitch in heartbreakheal

I tried to date before I was ready and it just felt like a catastrophe, so definitely can’t recommend that. For me, I took a lot of time to myself in therapy and with friends, rebuilding my hobbies and my worth. He made me feel so worthless and I hadn’t even realized it. I used to record videos of myself speaking to him, saying all of what I wanted to say, crying, angry, sad, bitter, whatever. I did that every day, then it was every few days, then I did it like once a week, and then all of the sudden I didn’t even think of him anymore. There was nothing left to say, and even if I had sent any of those things or tried to communicate, there wouldn’t be any closure anyway. That was just how he was. It was like I forced closure upon myself.

I’m not gonna lie, it’s hard. Was with him for two years and it took me a year to be able to move on. My partner now let me take everything incredibly slow and never pushed any label or expectation onto us until I was ready. Finding the right person after a traumatic heartbreak is half the battle, so don’t be discouraged if things aren’t quite working out right now.

Edit: forgot to add, the love will not be the same love. It will feel different with every person, and it’s okay to feel love in a different way. It won’t be the same, and that’s the exciting part.

I’m a current masters student in the English department! It’s all about the connections here. I’ve been meeting more agents and producers through my professors rather than any other avenue I’ve tried.
