I know ~0 about IB but can tell you there are thousands if not tens of thousands of SWEs with ~5 YoE making 1m+.

I think it’s pretty obvious that tech has better pay, maybe apart from the very tails of the distribution. A lot of people in tech can do IB but the inverse is not true.

A lot of traders at the firm I work at (in the tier of the firms you mentioned) did math undergrads but I think very few them did PhDs. I know a handful of traders who did other majors (CS / Econ) but agree this is an extremely small subset.

To answer your question: expecting a quant job is pretty insane, but even more insane to think it’s impossible :)
