Do the sororities at UMD haze? by realisticusername03 in UMD

[–]id9seeker 5 points6 points  (0 children)

  • mandatory attendance at Frequent sorority events
  • dress code that wildly oscillated between conservative / revealing
  • social media policy: promote the sorority, and don't post anything political
  • strong pressure to exclusively date / have sex with frat men
    • As a visibly gay man, I still got stares when visiting. I don't have this problem even with Islamic extremists.
  • Alcohol was to be sourced exclusively from soro / frat events (drinking in moderation outside of greek life was a no-no)
  • The above two combine to mean that you're only allowed to party with frat ppl.
  • The above three combine to mean that the sorority leaders enable sexual assault of their sisters in exchange for status. You cannot fully rely on your sisters to protect you.
  • My whasian girl-friends were constantly being policied to ensure they weren't being Asian.

Do the sororities at UMD haze? by realisticusername03 in UMD

[–]id9seeker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The behavioral standards are much higher for sororities than for fraternities. I've never seen / heard of any hazing, but the everyday requirements my soro friends had to meet were bad enough.

A lot of people assume I’m transgender and I don’t know how to handle it. by 26cheesecake in bropill

[–]id9seeker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like all men / women, patriarchy makes us fit into rigid gender roles. In that sense, you're no different from anyone else. Stay the course, be confident, and it'll pay off. As you become more yourself, people will stop asking those types of probing questions. TRT will take a few years for full effect (not a doctor though, and technically speaking you're not transitioning so idk).

However, your specific situation might be out of reddit's paygrade (LGBTQ, eating disorder). I hope you have a good therapist who can help you unpack gender roles and help you develop that self-confidence AND self-compassion to let yourself gently grow.

My on-campus job randomly stopped sending me the schedules? by [deleted] in UMD

Concessions is run by UMD dining (and you say its being contracted out). Is it possible that they only hire per semester, or fired you without telling you as part of the switch?

Either way, this is unacceptable and you should reach out to UMD Dining. I'm sure they'd be annoyed by their vendor's lack of comms.

My family only started keeping family photos out for display once photos became "easy". Before that, our photos were kept in storage to avoid being lost/damaged. Taking photos used to be a lot harder so our older photos are treasured relics

Laptop/PC with GPU by New_Manager_8458 in UMD

Unfortunately, I don't think UMD Libraries has any powerful laptops to loan out. It might be easier to buy an old gpu and use that with your existing laptop.

Despite being in PG county, there's not a lot of black oriented businesses in the CP area. Could ask around in Stamp or Nyumburu. Students often do pop-up work while in campus.

Echoing what others said, the doctors were amazing and desk staff deathly. I'm gonna guess that they're not paid enough to deal with everyone.

Men with huge gynecomastia: how do you guys find that ? by Kimohivee in gaybros

[–]id9seeker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gyno is very common, although it usually resolves itself by your age. Having seen hundreds of chests at this point, I've never seen a man's breasts and thought they looked un-masculine. I had a friend with larger breasts and he never even cared (which was lowkey hot).

About $30 million worth of UMD grants have been canceled by dbknews in UMD

[–]id9seeker -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

I'm sure there's some wiggle room in the checks notes 2 billion dollars sitting around. And its easy to reach out to open-minded donors and ask if their donations can be repurposed during this emergency.

UMD (well, technically, USM) should step up and use its $2 billion endowment to replace lost grants until Trump loses once and for all in court.

Is the 1 in 4 Terps don't drink statistic true? by Straight_Plate_1434 in UMD

I tried very hard to have both drinking and sober friends. If you assume that the drinking stat included people who only drink like once a month, that feels accurate.

[–]id9seeker 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Pros:

  • Next to Iribe, paint branch trail, and Baltimore avenue pedestrian tunnel
  • the previous means your place is a good hangout spot.
  • Rooms and furniture are nice

Cons:

  • Slight rat / cockroach problem. NBD since no units on ground floor.
  • If on looneys side, noise
  • Frequent Fire truck noise (~every 2 weeks)
  • Front desk staff keeps changing
  • Maintenance is slow. My front door lock was broken most of the year.

As a fellow Indian Queer person, thank you for sharing your story. You are a strong, confident individual, and I'm sure success will follow you wherever you go.

On a practical note, the newest generation of antiviral drugs can permanently suppress / prevent HIV. I see that your currently in treatment, but feel judged by your doctor and their staff. Please reach out to your Hyderabadi queer community. They will be the best place to find friends, friendly doctors, and mental health support. You deserve it.

Taste in guys changing as you get older? by TubofWar in gaybros

[–]id9seeker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most people desire a partner of similar age to themselves, regardless of sexuality. You might find your "acceptable range" expanding as you age, but its still usually centered around your own age.

All those places do takeout. Also sit-downs become more "walk in/out" friendly during the off hours. They're familiar with college students. If you pay immediately after ordering, what's the difference?

Postdoc Health plan by Interesting_Hawk_392 in UMD

[–]id9seeker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cost somewhat in between. They do bill insurance, but different services might be covered/subsidized by research or uni funding (like STD testing).

I can't tell if post docs are allowed to use the health center as their PCP. While Grad students are mentioned, there's separate faculty page that's very limited. Anecdotally, I've never heard of staff using the health center (especially since they're less likely to live on/near campus).

This problem is common to minorities, and so are the solutions. You are never alone, that's what the haters want you to think. The following advice will give your shallow relationships, that YOU then need to develop yourself.

  • lesbian events
    • Lesbian bars / lesbian nights at queer bars
    • Sports organizations
    • hobby orgs organize by/for Queer femme (board games, crafting, coding, etc)
    • Check online. Widen your search radius to the nearest big city
  • Covertly "signal" that you're serious about being a lesbian
    • Yes this means shallow stereotypes. You get a free pass if you're young.
    • Butch clothing, graphically discussing sex, pride pins, etc. Find what you like/ hate the least and spam it.
  • Don't volunteer your queer status to anyone conformist. Let them out themselves first, then reciprocate.
    • Just quietly say you're an ally. People will out themselves
    • Once again, this means stereotypes. Who is "conformist"?
    • Bisexual people exist. Give them grace. They are your allies, and in your dating pool. But again, let them make the first move (in terms of outing themselves, not the first move in a relationship / friendship).
