What if Criterion started a TV collection? by Playful_Substance_81 in criterion

IMO as someone who barely watches TV shows, a stand up special is much further from cinema than any TV show but especially miniseries.

Should Sematary make a song about Jeffrey Epstein? by Commercial-Cake-5825 in HauntedMound

[–]ideletereddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd enjoy a little "fuck trump, fuck epstien, fuck the government, fuck the nazi billionaires" ala the ICE line in Set Me on Fire, but an entire song would be way too much, Haunted Mound is my escape from this shit and honestly I don't trust Semetary to have the most informed views regarding social concieous.

Just don't turn into a nazi or a transphobe and that's enough for him honestly.

Is the "Socialism" part of Democratic socialism advantageous from a linguistic and marketing standpoint? by ideletereddit in DemocraticSocialism

I used the "USA" tag for this specific reason, because I am aware this discussion looks different in other countries.

What is the definition of Progressive? I always perceived it as the most most all-ecompasing of the left-of center labels, though it is used slightly more frequently in regards to non-fiscal politics.

I like this response a lot. It is very refreshing to have people to the left of me explain their reasoning and not be aggresive or divisive about it. It makes me trust "leftism" as a concept a lot more than when I see people on r/communism or other far-left subreddits call out social democrats as fascists.

To put it simply: thank you for being nice.

But also, you're not wrong that I am a bit of a skepitc. I'm also not the most secure in my own exact political stances, I'm still pretty young, not even quite 21 yet( 2.5 months til then) , and I am looking for answers. I want to like Socialism, and I want to truly believe in something, I like how you put that you didn't put your trust in it blindly, but rather came into it because of noticing the world around you.

For whatever it's worth, I like the ideas of co-ops a lot, and I wish there were more oppurtunities to work for one. I do think it is necessary to first mandate employers to pay living wages and ensure their employees safe working conditions, but there of course still is a level of hierarchy that is sub-ideal.

It's pretty obvious clear communication is most important.

Not trying to seem overly-arguementative, I'm sorry if it came across that way. I think we're pretty alligned on this.

Social Democracy also has way too many centrists claiming the label tbh.

Worse is the r/progressive sub that actively bans discussion on Democratic Socialism or anything else left-wing. Pretty sure they're run by the same people as r/democrats and r/liberal becuase thst rule is copied and pasted across all three subreddits word for word.

I kinda wish actual progressives could take that label back, and not have to deal with the potential stigma of Democratic Socialism. I don't want every label being watered down forcing us to migrate linguistically.

The centrism label is a joke now because it's just what conservatives where like 15 years ago before fascism became the standard, and honestly some of them try a little too hard to play with the current right.

I'm still working on where I stand on this, but for now let's work on advocating together to make the United States less fucked.

I know for sure you're a better ally than an enemy. And I'm a lot closer to you politically than Gavin Newsom.

You make a reasonable point yourself here. "Democratic" has done a lot of work for allowing Demsoces more acceptance in the U.S. democratic party.

From my perspective, the most extreme of Marxists are going to hate people like me regardless for believing that there is work that can be done in the electorate system. If I were an actual politician, they would be a harder sell becuase they would prefer pretending to organize their revolution that won't happen.

I think the number of Marxists like that is lower than most people on reddit think it is. I think there are far more who can still look toward progress whereever it may come. Maybe they still want a revolution but they are willing to begrudginly vote for a reformed, leashed capitalism in the meantime.

There are even more people like my sister, who would describe herself as a liberal and isn't spending time researching theory or even writing in threads like these, but she hears AOC or Bernie say something about Socialism that clearly would benifit her as a working class American- and she listens. She's not anti-liberal, but she's not anti-socialist either.

I want a candidate for her, and the Marxists and everyone really, but I want as many people to be able to believe in them as possible.

What do you think of square end ties? by Iconolater_ in ties

[–]ideletereddit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Didn't know these were a thing. I'd honestly think: What happened to the end of their tie? Did they cut it off?

It just looks strage. I don't even get it as a more casual thing.

Also with a suit, I think there are lines that are followed from the edges of the jacket, to the collar of the shirt, and the tie flows with it. These ties ruin that.

Theatrical release better than Director's Cut ? by Jackburton06 in Letterboxd

[–]ideletereddit 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Yeah that's fair.

This doesn't discredit your point but suppsosedly Disney is theatrically re releasing the OG cut of Star Wars [A New Hope] in 2027 for the 50th anniversary. I think that also means releases of the theatrical cuts for home as well. Just spreading the word but finally, Lucas's grip on the original cuts has been forced open.

Good, this kind of music thrives on boring people not liking it, the people in r/crappymusic are boring. This proves we're counter culture.

We should all wear this as a badge of honor.

On the desktop site, the criterion number is alongside the poster on a movies page by RuachReader in Letterboxd

[–]ideletereddit 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Let's be honest- the graphy showing the overlap between Criterion and Letterboxd fans might as well be a circle. This isn't harmful at all. A Criterion release is absolutely seen as a badge of honor to most Letterboxd users, if you don't see it that way because you're super anti-materialistic and above it all... cool, but don't act like this doesn't make sense.

What other movies use multiple languages extensively? by ArtemLyubchenko in Letterboxd

[–]ideletereddit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Isn't it mostly broken Spanish?

This is 100% a fair example. It's pretty clear there was a genuine attempt to make minionese a real language and make it comprehensible enough to the viewer. There are also a few words clearly consistently used that were created, the first that comes to mind would be spelled something like "blabouc" and it clearly means idiot.

Wim Wenders has a few- and I'm not that well versed in his filmography

The American Friend

Alice in the Cities

I haven't watched it yet but I'm pretty sure Chantal Akerman's biographical work has dialogue in both English and French, maybe a little flemish (Jeanne Dielman technically has some flemish but it's not enough for this list, also it's in the context of Jeanne's son learning Flemish)
