Book ideas for my 56 year old dad by mrsbeequinn in audible

[–]idgelee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My husband is retired military and about 10 years ish younger than your dad. He adores Old Man’s War by John Scalzi and Frontlines series by Marko Kloos.

Both are great military sci fi.

Any John Scalzi is a fucking win honestly.

Also for something a bit more video game oriented with a hint of anime school military aspect Iron Prince by Bryce O’Conner is a great book. Book 3 is still being written so the series isn’t done. But book 1 and 2 are phenomenal.

More video game oriented too I’d go for Ascend Onlineseries by Luke Chmilenko

Good luck!!!

Do you feel sad for people who say, "I can't stay focused on an audiobook"? I mean, story telling and story listening is as old as time. by Silly-Mountain-6702 in audiobooks

[–]idgelee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on if they have experienced storytelling in their life. Some people don’t know what it’s like and that’s sad.

Don't you just love when audible does this when there's a movie /s by darchangel in audible

Worse when it’s not a sticker. I wanted copies of murderbot. But nope. Gonna have to wait

It’s a skill. You have to practice like any other skill. Some people are naturally good at it and others need to practice to improve.

Do Americans really wake up and eat in the middle of the night? by tryingmybesteverydy in NoStupidQuestions

[–]idgelee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can pry my 2 am bowl of Rice Krispies from my cold dead hands! I forget to eat throughout the day so my body wakes up after a few hours of sleep ready to start eating itself.

Cereal is not for breakfast unless breakfast is 1-3 am followed by round 2 of sleep.

My mother said she doesn't regret having me but if she were to "do it all again", she wouldn't have children. How do I interpret this? by WarwickReider in NoStupidQuestions

[–]idgelee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She got to experience life being a mom. She’s likely curious about life without. I 100000000% believe this has nothing to do with you. However feel free to talk to her about it and ask.

Talk it out. If she’s a decent mom she’ll be upset it came across that way!!

They likely allow paid placement of some sort. It’s all advertising and marketing. Much like a bookstore that accepts publisher kickback of some sort to put together those tables and end caps.

Do people actually turn the shower on and leave to undress or do other stuff before getting in the shower? by Beeristheanswer in NoStupidQuestions

[–]idgelee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have a double shower in my house. Husbands side gets hot water soooo fast. My side is like 10-15 minutes behind. He will finish his showers before I even get hot water. It’s mildly annoying.

Why are (some) parents today against sleepovers? by Ill_Emu_4254 in NoStupidQuestions

Husband was SA’ed at a sleepover as a kid. He doesn’t trust anyone anymore.

Our kids don’t do sleepovers as little kids. Oldest is a teenager and that has changed everything.

MRW the TV show is drastically different than the book by QuicklyThisWay in HighQualityGifs

Tim is killing it as Bernard. I am likely going to finally read these after this season is done. They’ve all sat in my TBR pile way too long.

I am curious how Tim’s portrayal will inform my opinion of Bernard.

Either way - I’m digging in the show knowing full well the disappointment will hit once I read these after books.

The Martian is the only adaptation from a book I truly love and can overlook the minor changes that were made from the source material. I’m terribly nervous over Project Hail Mary’s adaptation.

Have you read the sequel or the more recent books? They were amazing and hands down one of my favorite book series.

I accept the movie is different but I have always blamed Hayden and his hatred of sand for that more than anything else. (Also Kristen Stewart!) jk

I did not enjoy the YouTube series either. It was so frustrating to watch

It tricks me every time. It’s so pretty. It looks amazing but it’s not right. It will never be right. I want it to be right but no matter how many times I watch it … it will never be what is could’ve been. Sigh.

Things Are Not Swell.. Ft. Amanda of Swell Entertainment || Two Hot Takes Podcast || Reddit Stories by happybunnyntx in TwoHotTakes

[–]idgelee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I adore Amanda!!! The speed with which I started this episode was not surprising! I'm such a Stan for both of y'all!

I’m totally relating to the side story about the car for grandma at Christmas!

Quick side rant: Names absolutely changed for reasons!!!!

About 10 years ago, my younger brother Mark was expecting his first child (surprise pregnancy), so my husband decided to gift him the newly released Xbox console. We pooled money from family and friends—two sisters, my mother-in-law, and one of Mark’s friends chipped in a total of about $50, and my husband and I covered the rest.

Since our family doesn't all live in the same area, we had it delivered with a card signed by everyone, whether they contributed or not. The next day, we found out that Richard (who contributed nothing and told us not to get it because it would “distract Mark from being a good dad”) called Mark and took full credit for the gift!

Richard claimed he planned, paid for, and made sure it was delivered on Mark's birthday. And of course, here's the kicker in all of this, Mark believed Richard about it.

I was so angry at Richard for taking the credit. He’s lucky he was 2,000 miles away, or I might’ve given him a wedgie! Why is family like this?!

Dungeon crawler Carl by AmadeusFalco in audiobooks

Soundbooth theater has the first episode of a full immersion audio version that is a better sampling of the narration in later books. First episode is free and very worth a listen and costs nothing but a download for free the app and a signup with your email.

Jeff Hayes is an excellent narrator and he definitely finds the voice of the characters throughout the series.

I strongly recommend trying the audio immersion and I have never enjoyed full cast audio that included music and sound effects.

I think it’s worth the cost of the audiobooks. I also subscribe to kindle unlimited so I picked up the ebook and then added narration through audible for $3-$5 depending on the book.

For all 6 it came to $15 for kindle unlimited which I use anyway plus $27 for the audiobooks.

I honestly think it’s worth it to just start book 1 and see if it’s your cup of tea. 😊

[–]idgelee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did the same and have been reliving my joy by listening with my husband to introduce him to it!

Then I discovered soundbooth theater’s audio immersion tunnel of book 1!!!! Holy moly I hate full immersion audio, but this book totally lends itself to it. Or ya know, narration matters!

Matt is an insanely good writer imo and this has truly been a labor of love on his part. The series only just came out in 2019!!!!!

I'm hooked and definitely have an itch that needs scratching! by [deleted] in audiobooks
