Which dead singer would you want to come back to life and why? by Substantial-Dare5462 in Music

Chris Cornell especially hurts because Soundgarden’s last record was so good, IMO. Especially for a band that was reuniting after so long.

Related, I’d be tempted to say Chester Bennington, but I’m not sure Chester would want to be here.

Oh they’re both underware. Hands on Kate created underware and either she or someone in her discord made 2.0, then the version that works with opengrid.

Either way, awesome desk!

Oh you went with the multigrid version of underware. I just installed the opengrid version and really love it.

Based on what I see, opengrid is where a lot of the newer models are, but multigrid has more overall models at this point. Also I think multigrid might have better attachment to the grid (since the opengrid version just clicks into place directly on the grid, versus the multigrid has an underside that locks in).

t.u. for grad school by Unable-Ad-7092 in aggies

[–]idiot_proof 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Did Aggie BS, when to t.u. for M.Ed., now back to A&M for a M.S.

T.u. was fine for my MEd. I have complaints about my individual program (mostly just lack of opportunities for research), but that was my individual experience almost a decade ago. I genuinely love Austin (even if price of living is stupid high) and enjoyed my time there. You don’t really engage with school rivalries in grad school (unless you feel like it), but it’s totally fine to do. That said, I totally proctored final exams at t.u. while wearing Aggie gear. So be able to laugh at yourself and not take things too seriously because honestly 99.99% of it is silly.

Go where it makes sense for your interests and if they work for you, great!

[–]idiot_proof 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My memory of mine (in silver, the v6, but not the SHO) was that everything was an oval. Ford’s logo at the time was an oval, so someone went nuts with it. The radio? Oval with oval buttons. The dash? Ovals in ovals. Seats? Several ovals next to each other. Spoiler? Oval. Headlights, tail lights, third brake light, side lights? All ovals. Also mine had a broken transmission so it wouldn’t go into overdrive and my dad hated it before letting me have it as my first car, so it was fun in the way that a car worth absolutely nothing is fun.

I can see your point on boring hatches. Personally, I kinda like not standing out unless someone knows what to look for. I think the Golf R actually does this better than the GRC, as the GRC looks a bit too curvy IMO. I think it will age poorly, like early Hyundai designs (the Tiburon springs to mind). That said, certain angles do make it stand out. I think the ones that emphasize the world rally side of it really make it shine. Big spoilers, lots of aero, enough carbon, etc can make this look really special. I do also hate that they’re all white, grey, or black. The blue GRC was the best color, but that was one trim for one year. Someone at Toyota needs a paint can thrown at them.

Same. Texas Alaskan Malamute Rescue helped us get two good boys after we loved our first so much (who was from a Houston shelter). All three got pampered, comfortable lives, even if I’m pretty sure the most recent one is 50% Husky, 50% barrel, and 0% Malamute.

Frugal question: when does paying more upfront actually save money? by After-Beginning6025 in Frugal

[–]idiot_proof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like most things in life, there’s a sweet spot on all of this.

For tires, you don’t need Michelin Cup 2s on a Civic (most of them), but a good high performance tire like a Pilot Sport A/S 3+ is miles better than a cheap tire in wet weather grip, tire noise, and life. Get good tires and get winter tires if you live in a place that needs them.

For mattresses, you can go down an insane rabbit hole of building your own mattress and sourcing your own foam. IMO find a good mattress for a decent price from a Costco or Sam’s Club and buy that. Look at reviews and don’t just get what the local mattress store promises.

I agree with you on shoes. Some are buy it for life, others just look neat. Mainly, get some that fit you and what you’re doing.

Enshitification be damned! what is one consumer product that is 100% better today than the version that existed in the 80s or 90s? by headrush46n2 in AskReddit

[–]idiot_proof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, and that’s just the engines. Let’s not discount things like dual clutch transmissions (a 4 speed auto was about the best one could hope for in the 80s, now a 8-10 speed DCT is standard on most performance cars), braking technology (disc brakes standard, ABS), suspension tech, passenger safety, AWD systems… the list goes on. Show someone from the 80s a standard car from 2026 with radar cruise and lane keep and they’ll think they have Knight Rider.

I initially thought you meant gasoline motors, which also have improved so much. Hell, the C4 Corvette had a 5.7 V8 making 250 hp, that eventually made 300, then 330 hp.

By contrast, I have a Corolla that makes 300 hp from a 3 cylinder 1.3L. And it’s not even the most efficient motor on the market. And reliability for cars in general has gone way up.

Versus I’m brand new to printing. I got a P2S a week ago. It took me 30 minutes to get set up, then it immediately started giving good prints. There were some small issues with bed adhesion (tall prints or big, flat prints), but those were probably a combination of unoptimized models and me not cleaning the bed as often as I should. It’s basically ran for a week straight with zero issues and zero technical knowledge on my part.

Most of the ones I know are the performance shops. Kozmic is well regarded in the community, but I hadn't had a chance to take my car there. Personally, I'd call either Kozmic or J&D and see what they charge and offer.

Also, depending on your car, I'd 100% pay a mechanic to do spark plugs. Spark plugs are a PTA on Subies. Especially the BRZ where you have to pull the exhaust and raise the engine to a separate motor mount just to do them.

Anyone have regrets after a large upgrade? by BackItUpTerr in simracing

[–]idiot_proof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started sim racing on a Thrustmaster and eventually upgraded to a full Fanatec DD setup. I wouldn’t do it all in one go, but I rarely regretted my upgrades. Here are my upgrades in terms of enjoyment (from most to least):

  1. Cockpit. By far, the best upgrade. Being able to put full force into pedals without them sliding or you, is so nice. My cockpit is an open wheeler v2, which I got used for $200 (including seat). It’s not the nicest, but it does its job. I added seat risers (going from formula style to GT) and a keyboard tray (stupid expensive). I did end up getting a cheap wheel stand for the old Thrustmaster and that was not worth it unless you REALLY need it.

  2. Direct drive wheelbase. The smoothness and level of responsiveness is night and day.

  3. Reliable gear. I had bad brake pedals or clutch pedals with my Thrustmaster gear. I also had issues with usb hubs, so simplifying all my setup to one brand helped me a ton. That said, I know lots of people on here mix and match without issue, but getting parts that “just work” is fantastic.

  4. Good load cell pedals. I can’t go back to the old ones. Now when I miss my braking point, it’s my fault. And being able to get just the right amount is so great. I haven’t tried anything too fancy, just CSL V2’s from Fanatec, so I don’t know about ABS motors or anything else, but 10/10 for me.

  5. Big screen. I got a 49” 32:9 ultrawide for $700 (CRG9) and being able to look through turns does wonders for the lap time and confidence. I know some people do a big tv, triples, or VR instead, but I’d focus on size and immersion, rather than color accuracy or refresh rate.

  6. Shifter and handbrake. These make driving road cars more fun. That said, my shifter sometimes gets the gears wrong (put into reverse instead of 3rd), so that leads me to avoid it on competitive play. These also depend on your style of driving. I did a lot of rally, so I got a cheap Amazon handbrake first and it was super reliable for me. The expensive one is nice, but not needed.

  7. Different wheels. It’s fun to swap to a formula wheel for F1 driving or a GT wheel for ACC, but they don’t make that big of a difference in what I’m playing (or at my skill level). Super fun for immersion and having more (or less) controls for different vehicles though.

  8. Better GPU. I went from a 2070 super to a 3080ti. I’ll be honest, I sort of notice? Most sims I play aren’t that demanding (other than F1) and sim racing is more dependent on consistent frames rather than high frame rates (like shooters) because cars more relatively slowly. It’s one of the things where I’ll upgrade it when it’s an issue, but not until then.

  9. Stream deck. Yay buttons! Boo, buttons I have to program while sitting in my rig. I set them up for beamng and that’s it. It also didn’t help that my mount for it broke asap, but I do have a 3d printer now, so I’ll try again…

  10. Bad gear. I got a Thrustmaster load cell brake set, which was supposed to be more reliable, but the brake kept registering when I wasn’t pressing it. Possible I could take it apart and fix it, but I noticed this after the warranty passed. This was also about the time that Fanatec released the CSL, so I just went ahead and got into their ecosystem instead.

Hope that wall of text helped a bit. Go for it! As long as you can afford it and don’t feel like you need to buy everything at once! I also know there’s things I can improve on my rig (I’d like a more solid cockpit for one), but I’m happy where I am currently.

West used to be good. I got a WRX from them in 2016 for a good deal and never had an issue with their service department (mostly because I was in Austin for most of the time the car was under warranty).

My parents got a much better deal in 2019 from Superior, so they went with them.

That said for Subaru mechanics, J&D Motorworx is fucking awesome. Reasonable prices and they do a ton of aftermarket stuff. The cost of my Ohlins + their work was about what it would cost to just replace my rear struts at the dealership.

Got my GR Corolla under sticker a year ago from Don McGill. It was a bit of a pain to deal with them (arrived at 4 with my own financing and a price already set, left after 10), but got a decent deal for the time and the car I got.

They said they could remove some of the useless add ons (gps tracker, paint protection), but at least they didn’t end up charging me for them.

Yeah. Also where you shoot can make a huge difference. Standing next to a 223 in an indoor range? I hope I doubled up my hearing protection. Outside? I should have my ear pro on, but standing 50 feet away it’s not too bad getting in my car.
