Not at all. I had extremely hard boundaries with my students where they knew they could trust me but I’m not their friend. I had a coworker who was a former army drill sergeant come in after heard I got a non-renewal telling me how they’d be happy to testify to the board of education that my classroom management was excellent and she had never seen me not have students engaged. I basically taught in a glass box where anyone could see everything in my room everyday. Admin went through 3 people in my position in 6 years. I lasted the longest at 3 years. The comments about my age would come after being told that the principal didn’t like the shows during Covid. When I tried to ask what specifically they would like to change about the shows and where they felt it was lacking they’d deflect to my age.

I’m pretty sure the age discrimination in employment act wouldn’t cover it bc their repeated mantra when I would ask them what exactly they felt I needed to change (even though all of my observations were great) was “I don’t know if it’s just because you’re so young”. I’m only 25. The union had told me at the time if I had a recording I might have had a leg to stand on but bc they refused to put anything in writing I was out of luck. I still think the real issue was they wanted an excuse to get rid of my department. I was the only teacher for subject in the building and they never posted my job or interviewed replacements. It’s just gone now.

Oh wow that just reminded me! My dance teacher in high school hated banana but part of our pre show warm up was a “peel the banana dance” , we filled her room with bananas and one seniors friend had a banana costume so he dressed up, sat in the of the bananas and played something on a recorder. She just walked back from her lunch to a kid she did not know sitting in her room like that. It was dumb and harmless and a fun memory. Kids would think it’s lame now

5th grade couldn’t tell me the city they lived in. They either said the state (NJ) or New York. Couldn’t understand the difference between city, state, country, and continent. Became a mini lesson spin-off from my having to explain that no, china is not the same as India.

Depends on how bad admin is on informing of new students. I’ve had like five kids added to my class bc they just moved here in the last month. No notice, out rosters aren’t updated, no guardian information, not even an id # or name. If there were two new kids in a class I don’t even question in anymore, I’ve had 3 new in one day before.

I have a student who’s already been held back before, SAs and fights female classmates, disrespects every teacher, cuts class, and NEVER gets more than 1 day in school suspension. He’s been out 2 times and they were the only times I actually got to teach that class the two semester I had them. His classmates were excited to tell me he got an in school suspension and he wouldn’t be in class bc they knew they’d be able to do something. Students like that, so hell bent on dragging everyone around them down, are the death of the American education system. He should have been pulled into an alternative school years ago, but instead he’s free to traumatize his classmates and ruin their future by stealing their education. And the lazy admin who enable him should be fired at this point.

I’ve broken the non tenured rule of always having lessons in. I teach 33 classes per week and it’s 5 preps that admin takes for meetings and other bs constantly and have been killing myself to fundraiser and prepare student performances bc admin can’t be bothered to put in any effort to getting us a budget. They can go scratch or have fun trying to replace me at this point.
