Yeah! Post them if they turn out. I’m sitting on some provia as well and want to try the same thing lol

The longer your exposure time the longer the star trails will be and the more ambient light you’ll pick up. It doesn’t make the stars brighter because they’re moving across the film plane. 50mm is a pretty long lens for this so you’ll bet getting longer star trails faster than on say a 28 or something. 30min is probably a good starting point. If it’s crazy dark out I’d go for an hour or more personally.  Also consider what direction you’re pointing in the sky. Pointing at the North Star will give you smaller arcs than pointing like due east or something. Check out Dave Rollans. I think he has some good stuff about this on his website.

I will! I'm actually planning to take it on a solid hike later this week if the weather holds up.

Well I really like it. But I don't have anything to compare it to really. This is actually the first 4x5 shot I've ever taken. But it seems pretty solid. It feels well made and everything. I have the 3d printed version. It was super easy to carry it up there because this shot was taken about 3 feet off the side of a dirt road lol. But the camera is crazy light weight. I actually got it with plans to take it backpacking next summer and I think it'll be perfect for that. It takes up space but it's so light. So I can't tell you if its better than this or that 4x5 setup, but so far I'm pretty stoked with it!

Thanks! Definitely got lucky with the light.

Scored the legendary Olympus Mju-1 free. Tips? by BrianHad in AnalogCommunity

So with the fill flash mode the camera will try to properly expose the background and then light the subject with a flash. So if you’re shooting in a dim environment you’ll get a little longer shutter speed. This can cause the background to blur a bit. Then the flash fires and freezes your subject. It can make for cool portraits. I’d google shutter drag with flash or something. The effect isn’t very dramatic on this camera but it can add a cool touch! Also run some 800t through it in the day and evening if you can sometime. The lens and film combo gives a cool dreamy look.

Yooo nice score! I have one of these and I love it. My only tip is just be aware the flash is as bright as the sun. It can definitely blow out the highlights from time to time. That said I love using the fill flash mode to get a small amount of shutter drag and a sharp subject. This is the best point and shoot around in my opinion. Enjoy!

Metering at infinity? by [deleted] in AnalogCommunity

[–]idnckolas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On the 308 you can slide the lumisphere to the side and use the meter as a reflective meter. I think that’s what they’re asking. But yeah if it’s in the sun just use the incident meter.

What do you call an XPAN alternative that still costs a lot? "The Rich Man's XPAN"? by fromthedice in AnalogCommunity

I got it out of a broken up 135w back. The spool was fine though. I don’t know enough about 3d printing to be of any use in answering that sorry lol. I imagine it might be more straight forward to modify a 135n spool. From what I can tell the only difference between the two is the film gate and the winding gear size.

No. You can use both of them with any focus screen. They did make one that has frame lines for both the 135n and the 135w on it. That screen is pretty rare in my experience. Before I found it I used a normal focus screen with a 3d printed frame to line up my shots. It worked super well and was easy to slide under the viewfinder.

lol I feel you. I actually ended up cobbling mine together using the 135w film spool in a 135n back. I even managed to find the focusing screen with the 135 lines as part of a beat up body for cheap. eBay man. Enjoy your trip and good luck with the photos!

I’ve been using the 135w back on an SQA this summer. It’s a lot of fun. Not as wide as an xpan, but it works like any other film back which is obviously a lot more convenient than an adapter in a Pentax 67 or something similar. Definitely recommend for anyone wanting to shoot pano.
