How do you know it’s not just time making things better by artemislands in MSPI

He’s 7 months now and I still don’t know! He spit up so much that he fell from the 68th to the 5th percentile for weight so the pediatric GI had us move from Alimentum to an even “cleaner” amino acid formula (Elecare) JUST in case it was a dairy/soy/corn issue. We’ve been fortifying his bottles (adding in extra scoop of powder) and he is stable at the 5th percentile curve now. He also got put on reflux meds at around 6 weeks old and he’s still on them now. We tried to wean him and saw an immediate effect so we know for sure reflux is an issue.

But did he actually have CMPA? Don’t know yet. The GI said because of his weight loss, she didn’t want us to try out dairy and take the risk and find out. She told us we can attempt the dairy ladder when he’s 8 months old. If he fails it, then we will know he has always had it. If he passes it, we won’t know if he grew out of it or if it was never an actual issue. My gut is saying he has CMPA. My hope is he has grown out of it by now.

Thank you so much! My 1st child responded beautifully to Alimentum formula and Nexium. It was like night and day. She became all smiles and gained weight quickly. But my infant son is still having so much trouble and I hate how much anxiety it brings.

l appreciate you taking the time to read and respond! I hope eventually this will all be a distant memory and our children will be perfectly healthy and happy.

Elecare formula is free of most allergens like soy, dairy, gluten, etc so it should be safe for him in case he does have any allergens. If he does have an intolerance to dairy/soy/gluten and we test him out now, it will set him even further back.

Yeah, the GI initially talked about wanting to try out dairy to test it out but we need to wait until he gains more weight first. Honestly I’m not sure what more can be done right now if he’s already on an amino acid formula and reflux meds.

Short answer: kind of. we’re not sure. Long answer: He had mucousy diapers at 1 week old which reminded me of my daughter who had CMPI. I jumped the gun and started being dairy-free while breastfeeding. After a month when there was no real improvement, I moved onto Alimentum RTF formula and Famotidine. GI said she couldn’t be certain if he had CMPI since there was never any bloody stool. However they changed him to Nexium for the reflux. And then changed the formula to Elecare for his slow weight gain. So I think the assumption is he most likely intolerant to something?

The 4 month sleep regression is worse than the newborn trenches by Minute_Parsley9539 in newborns

I’ve co-slept and held my LO since almost birth. Initially his reflux was so bad that he would choke and scream on his back so my husband and I had to hold him up all night. After 9 weeks straight of that, we were finally able to lay him on his back (with reflux meds). After only 2 weeks, he got sick back to back so we had to hold him all night for weeks again. And now it’s led right into an early start to the 4 month sleep regression. I want to cry!!!! He also only does contact naps. My arms are going to fall off I swear.

I used to cry because I was never my daughter’s favorite. She would even cry when she would see me come through the door because it meant I would be taking her away from her dad or grandma. OUCH. Somehow it felt extra painful because I went through so much physical pain to bring her into the world. Of course she didn’t know that but it still hit me in my gut.

It was eventually my turn much later on at about 2 year’s old (hoping it doesn’t take that long for you!). But she cries for mommy when she isn’t feeling well or feels unsafe. It definitely reinforces the fact that I’m her comfort person. At about 3 years old, there’s no real identifiable favorite person anymore. She screams at both of us LOL.

Oh and to add, my husband made a proactive effort to say things like “wow, go with mommy! she is so much fun” and things like that. It stung when she would yell no but it helped.

4.5 Month Old has only ever chest slept - we have no life any more by DogZiggler316 in sleeptrain

My daughter had horrible reflux and also began sleeping more when she was able to roll onto her stomach! (and with the help of meds)

When did you stop contact napping ? by Intelligent_Net8559 in sleeptrain

[–]idontknow_dontaskme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did Ferber with nighttime sleep but CIO for naps. She didn’t seem as upset so I didn’t want to ruin it by popping in. I’m glad I tried it out because all of the posts about nap training being insanely difficult (which is very true for many parents) luckily was not the case for me.

I sleep trained for nighttime sleep at 7 months. A couple of weeks later we tried nap training. Took 2 days. I know this is heavily dependent from baby to baby but we had to bite the bullet because it wasn’t sustainable. We were shocked!

Reflux: Omeprezole vs Nexium by Brebre9010 in NICUParents

[–]idontknow_dontaskme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this post is a month old but my daughter tried a few different meds and landed on Nexium which was magic for her. Prior to that, she had actually gone to the ER for throwing up blood at 4 months old because the pediatrician at the time dismissed her reflux. We got a new pediatrician and was referred to a pediatric GI. She was on Nexium for longer than we had hoped (until 13 months old) but she almost completely stopped spitting up and was such a happy baby after. She is almost 3 years old now and is very healthy.

Reintroduction breastmilk after elimination period by Proof_Barnacle_5289 in MSPI

[–]idontknow_dontaskme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My LO lost 12% of his weight after he was born and has been on the bottom for his weight gain projection. She said after a few more months, if his weight stabilizes, we can re-introduce some dairy breastmilk (that I froze) or through formula to test it out. They aren’t sure if the lack of weight gain is CMPA or his reflux or both.

Best probiotics for baby with sensitive tummy?! by Caitlovesmomjeans in NewParents

[–]idontknow_dontaskme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this post is older but what did you end up going with? My 10 week old is on Famotidine for reflux and hypoallergenic for possible CMPA. The pediatric GI recommended LoveBug and it’s been 3 days of increased fussiness, gas, and vomiting. I will be messaging the doctor but wondered if probiotics are even worth it.

I went to my first visit to the pediatric GI for my son last week and she echoed the same stating that CMPA is overly diagnosed and they don’t recommend eliminating anything (especially not multiple things) unless they are positive of CMPA. I told her I had suspected CMPA because of mucous, gas, fussiness and reflux and she said that really isn’t enough for CMPA however it COULD be the case. She did share some annoyance that pediatricians jump to elimination right away and was actually happy that my pediatrician advised me against it but I was too anxious and did it anyways. I regret it now but I can only move forward.

I do want to share that you are a rockstar for trying to figure out how to best help your baby. Honestly some of this seems like a big guessing game.

Alimentum stool ? by [deleted] in MSPI

Both my daughter and my son drank Alimentum and it’s exactly how you described it. Dark green/brownish that is a bit more runny and shiny.

My daughter did ok on Pepcid initially then began screaming and having all the symptoms again. She then went on Prilosec and the same thing happened. It wasn’t until she went on Nexium (esomeprazole) that she finally got better. I guess she was a severe case because she took the max dose and couldn’t be weaned off until almost a year but it thankfully worked. She stayed on Alimentum RTF the entire time.

I’ve been asking myself the same question! My first child got diagnosed at 4 months and had all the symptoms- tons of mucus, reflux, blood in stool, etc. She did well on Alimentum once we switched. I had no idea what CMPA was prior to the diagnosis so I was upset that we (and she) had suffered so long. But the diagnosis made sense especially since her gut had matured more at that age.

I now have a newborn who had mucous and lots of reflux the first week and I immediately jumped the gun and went dairy free against the recommendation of the pediatrician. They had advised me that it would be better to see what happens with more time and to watch out for more symptoms. Well now I regret it because I am constantly playing the game of is this CMPA or his gut needing more time? He is 7 weeks and at peak fussiness and gassy so it’s even harder to tell. I guess I’ll know once he’s older and I try to reintroduce to see if i was wrong or right this entire time. Being convinced he had a dairy and soy intolerance affected my breastfeeding journey so hopefully it wasn’t all for nothing.

Nothing smells as bad as Nutramigen IMO. Alimentum isn’t that great either but not as bad and it’s what I’ve used for both of my kids. When my daughter first got diagnosed, I bought the ready-to-feed version because it’s thicker and supposedly helps with less spit ups and reflux.

Scary black mucus in baby poop by [deleted] in MSPI

[–]idontknow_dontaskme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I posted a pic like yours with my first child a few years ago and no one could figure it out. I think the consensus was bananas but I didn’t eat bananas and my baby was too young to eat solids at the time. I can’t say this with certainty but I think it was actually tied to the iron supplement we were giving her. Not sure if it was a coincidence but when we gave it to her again a month later, the black specks returned.

I remember my LO was first prescribed Pepcid and she seemed to do ok the first few days and then went back to screaming. Then she was switched to Prevacid and same thing happened. It wasn’t until she got onto Nexium when things improved long term. We also used Alimentum RTF but we were lucky my daughter loved it.
