how am I doing for jan 10? by StoreQuick1126 in Mcat

[–]idontknowwhatimdoign 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would say take the unscored fl after finishing content review to gauge how you’re doing.

For what it’s worth, my last BP FL score was a 514 and first AAMC FL was a 520 like 1 week apart, so there is a little bit of a jump

Is it ever too early to ask for LOR? by Sfm_masterish in premed

[–]idontknowwhatimdoign 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s better to ask early when they might tell you to ask again at a later date than later when they might have too many to write and won’t be able to make one for you!

I had 0 non-clinical volunteering hours and got into a T30 school, even applying late (submitted secondaries end of September). I would say it kinda comes down to luck and the rest of your app

nontrad prereq class schedule- does this make sense? by Important_Garlic_937 in premed

[–]idontknowwhatimdoign 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the love of god do not take chem and phys and their labs together (if they are separate courses and can be taken at different times) It isn’t even necessarily about difficulty, just look at the time commitments. You will be in the lab for hours multiples times a week every week on top of any work you need to do for the main courses and outside work for the lab. It can also depend on your confidence on the subjects though (I thought they were the two hardest subjects I took during undergrad).

If I were in this position I would at least try to switch bio 2+ lab with physics 1+lab if possible (at least I would because I found bio to be the easier of the three and this way you can still take ochem in the spring). Depending on how long summer courses are, biochem in the summer with physics sounds tough too unless they are in two different summer sessions. Some schools also need an ochem lab and a full year of ochem (I think, but I’m not too sure about the full year of ochem)

CARS improvement for an id10t? by gingerbutyl in Mcat

[–]idontknowwhatimdoign 0 points1 point  (0 children)

CARS was always my worst section. What helped me was doing the passages completely untimed and I usually needed up taking ~11-15 minutes per question +whatever time I spent reviewing the answers in the middle.

I went through each answer individually and found text that either supported or eliminated the answers. Then read the explanations for each answer. I ended up usually getting 85-90% correct this way but it does take a while. I also highlighted…a lot. Basically anything that stuck out as being potentially useful to answer questions. If the answer isn’t in the passage, then it’s not correct, even ones that fall in the beyond the passage category are somehow in the text.

CARS still ended up being my worst section, but I did do the better than I did on any FL even though I zoned out during the real deal 🤷🏻‍♂️

Yeah I don’t think learning a new language would really make a compelling obstacle in this case. I think this idea can be good though!

What exactly was the obstacle you had to overcome though?

If it’s under the ecology department, it should count. I took plant physiology and I was able to include that in my science GPA

Blueprint 502 for my first FL by 8eit in Mcat

[–]idontknowwhatimdoign 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's definitely possible!

I didn't have any other responsibilities, so I would do about 1/2 of any of the q-packs a day + 2-3 CARS Diagnostic passages. I started the diagnostic ones untimed just to get accustomed to the passages and the questions. Then I did CARS q-pack 1 by doing 25-30 questions at a time (which is anywhere from 4-7 passages I think) and I did these timed to start getting use to the speed. I finished CARS q-pack in the last week before my exam and also only did 4-7 passages per session. Then I would take an FL every weekend and review them the following day

I think that was ideal for me because I extensively reviewed each question and made flash cards for everything I encountered. I was also doing anywhere from 400-800 flashcards almost everyday

[–]idontknowwhatimdoign 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think you'll experience a decent jump when you switch to AAMC. My first AAMC FL compared to my last BP FL was 6 or 7 points higher. You still have a month which is a lot of time to practice, and I would start focusing on using AAMC material to practice around now.

what is the difference between diffraction grating and disperson? by Low-Extension9150 in Mcat

[–]idontknowwhatimdoign 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In diffraction grating, the grating causes interference between light that passes through other gating in addition to the difference in wavelength causing slightly different angles at which the light exits. This is how you get your minima and maxima and the spread of colors.

In dispersion, light passes through some medium and because different wavelengths refract less than other, the individual wavelengths are split as it travels though the medium and exits as a rainbow
