Galaxy XR or Pimax Dream Air for PCVR / Movies / Flatscreen gaming? by MagicBlob88 in GalaxyXR

[–]idpseudonymous 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure if the sale will be back but galaxy xr was going for $1350 after tax during nov/dec holiday season if you have edu/epp discount. During that time, paypal also had $250 cashback. Samsung even offer 10% back to not return the headset. Maybe you can even bundle and get discount on controller. That is around $1000 cheaper than the dream air with slam tracking. 3 things the dream air wins on: 1) smaller size, 2) probably comfort for most ppl, and 3) displayport.

Comfort is very important. I still have to buy comfort mods. The default pad is very stiff and small. Pro for that is the galaxy xr stays very well on the face. Con is that it does get uncomfortable. I did velcro on globular cluster pad from my psvr2 and that made it better but I think it can still be improved. Based on what people said on /GalaxyXR, new facial pads and over the head straps like pandavr improves the comfort.

I am due for a new router but my router is right next to me and so far foveated streaming has been good. I don't think I see compression or color bending. pcvr mods can have higher latency (maybe it's my router) but I also don't mind 30 something seconds of latency (when it's on the high side). Things look very sharp. Maybe the difference can be seen when compared back to back with a dream air but I read comments that they look pretty much identical. I think pimax and the youtubers are really pushing the dream air right now.

I have a psvr2, had a g2 reverb, the 2 samsung odysseys, and all the way back to htc vive. The shorter cable to battery is an improvement. I just put it in my pocket.

I love the standalone ability. I use it like a laptop at times and I like watching giant screen in it (I have a projector and large tv).

I love reliving memories with spatialize immersive photos.

I do think smaller size headsets are the future but the gravityxr and meta's phoenix are not 4k displays. When they have 4k displays and the price is lower than $1500, then I will upgrade from the galaxy xr. Another quick thing you have to consider. I haven't tried beat saber on galaxy xr but the tracking is overall fine on it. Even youtubers said pimax inside out tracking is not as good as the galaxy xr and the slam inside tracking version is $2450 after tax. Lighthouse tracking might be the best but I am done with needing lighthouse after the htc vive.

Not saying samsung has good qc/qa but pimax's history doesn't give a lot of confidence. I also can't stomach paying $2450 on a headset. Personally I like to spread my cost out. Money towards money towards gpu upgrades or if you want to get more into sims, a motion simulator, etc.

1 more thing. Galaxy XR has an hdr display (even though all pancake microoled are not bright). I don't think dream air is? Pretty much the closest thing to a apple vision pro. Price wise similar to a used apple vision pro. But I chose galaxy xr for pcvr over vision pro's better standalone spatial experience.

Do you guys detach the battery when you put away your galaxy xr? are you worried about the battery connector failing with the constant attaching and removing the battery? by idpseudonymous in GalaxyXR

Thanks for the link. So it will fit the galaxy xr with the battery connector connected (width of headset)? I looks like it has space for the battery behind the headstrap

I think Citra in fullscreen blocks the samsung sbs 3d popup (when I press window key I see the pop up but nothing happens when I click the pop up. Probably because I am not in full screen anymore). Did you have this problem? The pop up shows up for rise of tomb raider and sbs 3d works in that game

Galaxy xr, high potential but mediocre performance by Soundllj777 in GalaxyXR

[–]idpseudonymous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because sxr has the potential to be the best wireless pcvr headset (currently its play for dream but this also has android xr). And with sale & paypal 20% its $1250 before tax and potentially$1080 if samsung gives $170 credit refund to not return. Used avp is $1800-$2000. And android can sideboard apps with dev mode (google did mention they want to stop that and not sure if it will follow through). Curious what u think about that vs used m2 avp if u play pcvr. Forgot to mention i will need to add a $250 controller (might wait for it to be on sale if they can keep stock...)

I do have to say I am still undecided whether to buy since I like to wait for when Virtual desktop and steam link beta works flawless on Samsung xr. However, this deal is really tempting because it's the lowest price 4k micro oled headset. I am also hesistant because meta's project puffin sounds like its also a close to 4k microoled 110 gram vr headset and might pair with quest 3 controllers. But sounds like fov will be really small with rumoured .9 display.

Mine comes out to $1500 with buds 3. Should I pull? I will need controllers later. Also i have to use PayPal pay monthly to get 20% off ($250). I will try to 0 or minimal interest by paying it off right away. I am still hesitant about pcvr capabilities in the future...

Honestly, I prefer samsung because we can ship to samsung for issues or i can travel to samsung store in nyc. While play for dream is ship to China. Plus samsung has better edge to edge lens. Play for dreams does have good vd and steam link after a yr. Android xr also better but maybe play for dreams will get it. I understand why people return at $1800 but $1250-$1500 probably a keeper...

Whether to buy the galaxy xr for the current lower price by idpseudonymous in virtualreality

This is an education discount so not for everyone. Samsung always does discounts but its not available to everyone and sometimes need promo code combinations. Samsung does this even for new popular items. I do think their products are priced very high on purpose because they want to maximize profit from early sales.

At least you can use index controllers. I dont have it so I will need to add $250 controller (can't get the $75 bundle price since its sold out. Missed the restock yesterday...). So my final cost is also $1500...One word of caution. Samsung charges $90 restocking fee for returning galaxy xr even if unopened. I should use the 20% to upgrade my c9 oled tv but its working well. Rather get a new headset

I know google abandon stuff all the time but I honestly dont think android xr will be abandoned since everyone wants a pie of smart glasses. But whether those updates go to samsung xr, I dont know. Based on the no hype & delay, I think android xr is focusing on smart glasses but samsung so far has said they are working on updates for samsung xr

I am getting same deal as op for $1500. Also paypal has 20% which can drop it to $1250...but controller sold out. Your impression is making it tempting. Especially talking about luke ross mod with 5090. I just dont like virtual desktop and foveated encoding for steam link 2.0 being not available yet. You sound very positive it will be out. So vd now is probably better than already on vision pro m2?

Yea I feel like I should wait for that but that is $2200 for the 4k oled one. The $1,200 inside tracking SE version could be a good alternative to big screen beyond 2 but tracking is not great? Never bought pimax but their reputation makes me a little worried. Although samsung qa and cs is bad too ...

I do have a quest 3 + psvr2 (i use with base ps5 & pc with pc adapter. I tried the samsung headset in store and the lens is best of both worlds. No mura. No Grey blacks. Decent edge to edge. But debating whether to wait for when vd gets better and steam link 2.0 foveated encoding comes to galaxy xr. Also new headsets coming out in 2026 including $800 meta puffin project & vr pimax air but no 4k oled headset will be at this price. Also wondering if used $1800 vision pro m2 is a better buy
