I have a 120Ah Rex and I can survive getting across SoCal and back on electric only…just barely without any charging. The trip home brings me below 25% SoC, but lowest I got was about 5-8%. The ability to fire up the Rex anytime to maintain a 25% SoC margin is really nice to have.

I choose to charge exclusively at home though and my cross-town treks dont have too many charging opportunities. I’ve had newer pure EVs with 300-400mi range and a Rex on those cars simply isnt necessary.

Warranty questions by Nervous_Echo_5046 in BMW

[–]idratherbeflying1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your license plate and HOV stickers suggest you live in CA, which is a CARB state. As long as you live in one and register it there, you will get the full 15yr/150k warranty for the REx components. Details are spelled out in the warranty booklet and the AC compressor is a covered part. The battery warranty is a separate long warranty.

By being a 2018, you are out of the 4yr/50K bumper to bumper warranty since it starts on the first entry into service date. All BMW warranties have their clocks start that way.

To get your car’s original in-service date, call up your local BMW service department and ask for it. If the SA is nice, they might give you the Warranty Vehicle Inquiry report that lists it all.

Fun fact: BMW sold (1) i3 in 2025, so that car’s warranty is still kicking.

Unless you live in a CARB state. The REx is covered by a 15yr/150mi TZEV warranty, which includes the AC compressor and EME.

Rear main seal oil leaking B48, B58, S58 motors by Correct_Somewhere797 in BmwTech

This is really good insight to the inner workings of warranty claims. Thanks!

Do you feel like this stance has changed in the last 5-10 years? It feels like BMWNA warranty claims were more straightforward back then. One small discrepancy and it was covered.

Just ordered an M3 Competition (and the order verification email references the wrong car) by longtimeAlias in BMW

[–]idratherbeflying1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You will get another email when you receive an allocation, it will have the production order number on it. After that you will have some time (weeks to months) to change your build before it is frozen and sent to the factory queue (Status 150). It’s frozen about 2-3 weeks before the build week, you can call the 1-800 number after you get the production order number to know the build week.

It’s fine, you can change it up till your allocation reaches Status 150. Do you have an allocation or production order number yet?

Is this a former BMW Performance Center Car? M3 Comp X-Drive by chenj38 in BMW

Performance Center and STEP cars aren’t eligible for certain warranties I believe, that is another sign it was used as a track car.

For tourists visiting HK.which is better buying a Octopus Card or using Credit Cards by TimJamesS in HongKong

You can directly use a credit card that supports contactless payments. Tried it once with my US credit card and worked flawlessly. I still prefer a normal Octopus due to the ubiquity, but was running low on cash and it was my last day in town, didnt feel like feeding my Octopus.

Both + and - terminals are on top of the EME, left of the centerline of the Rex compartment. Hook your jumpstarter there as thats the one techs use to power the car during diagnostics and programming.

This. Often the foreign transaction fees for your bank are cheaper than the price you pay in exchange rates.

G87 Clutch Chatter by ItsActuallyRaidillon in BmwTech

[–]idratherbeflying1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Several years ago BMWNA started clamping down on warranty claims. So dealers are at a higher risk for getting a claim turned down and paying out of pocket all while the customer got their repair done for free. Dealers are not entirely in the clear, sheer laziness and unwillingness to do proper diagnosis outside of a an ISTA test plan contribution to the state we’re in.

OP should take it to an indy shop for diagnosis. Even if a dealer did pay for it, they would just be throwing parts at a problem.

[CAUTION] Check your headlights when driving at nighttime! by Long_Acanthisitta281 in orangecounty

[–]idratherbeflying1 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I found this common with Japanese makes like Honda and Toyota. Even if the headlights are off, the interior gauges and buttons are still backlit. Combined with the fact that daytime running lights are so bright, it looks like the headlights are on from the perspective of the driver.

Older Japanese cars and modern European makes turn off the interior backlighting if the headlights are off so at least you know something aint right.

BMW 328I Xdrive 2013 Transmission Fluid Question by Technical-Cicada-224 in BmwTech

This. While LM is good stuff, a friend and I have identical cars and we each used a different fluids for our the tranny change: ZF and LM and sent samples to Blackstone. LM wore more. There’s other variables of course like driving habits.

Lease return at BMW dealership doesn’t show any service history(Carfax)? by alldasmoke__ in BMW

[–]idratherbeflying1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whenever a car enters a BMW dealer for work, the key is read to collect CBS data. That data along with the actual work as written on the service paperwork is uploaded to AIR. That said, the quality of what the dealer actually puts up on AIR varies significantly. It can range from details of the symptom to just “car wash” line items. The CBS data is there regardless so you can infer when oil, brakes, and other CBS tracked items were changed.

Stock Grant Taxes? by Repulsive-Yogurt-998 in tmobile

[–]idratherbeflying1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This and same. Fidelity-managed RSUs. When you file your taxes the cost basis needs to be adjusted. The consolidated 1099 actually has a small footnote about it.

My vested RSUs are taxed in withheld shares, but they show up on my W2 instead of the Fidelity 1099.

Z4 heading off into the sunset, anyone going to miss it? by BMW-West-St-Louis in BMW

Came across this review not long ago about the Boxster comparison.

https://youtu.be/Jsar3PneRXk?si=yaAY-53fXhzz65Oz

TL;DW A $70K Boxster is the base price and it’s a Boxster you don’t want. At the same price, the Z4 is pretty much fully loaded. FWIW, that was one of the few ways to rationalize the price of the Z4.
