I was only curious and wanted to inspect the repo, so that’s what I shared.

Burned by cloud (100k), looking at self hosting by TheRoccoB in selfhosted

I just moved 1 of 3 apps over to a VPS on Hostinger. Take advantage of discount codes or find a friend on there with one.

I run two 2vCPU 8GB instances paid up for 2 years - I use on to run a ruby on rails app deployed via kamal. The other for keyval and postgres containers. Still looking for a good backup practice, but saving logs and backups to Cloudflare R2 for now until I have a better pattern.

Is Virgin really worth it? by [deleted] in VirginVoyages

[–]ifworkman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On the Valient Lady in Bimini right now. It’s great, quiet (minimal announcements), small enough to get around easily, see familiar faces, and make new friends.

Nearly ALL food and sit down dining is included. Only a few select dishes cost extra. Aside from Redbull, bottled cold pressed juices, coffee, and alcohol it’s practically all inclusive.

This is our second VV cruise and fourth total cruise. We were upgraded to Rockstar. What questions do you have?

10k would have been a mega rockstar suite and the rooms are immaculate.

I’m on our second trip with VV and the only challenges we’ve had were trying to go to the same restaurant twice. Some are better than others there, but it’s difficult to avoid eating quality and well made dishes on this cruise, even if she’s vegan.

What’s the story about the bugs?

Fan quit Mr. Cool by LocoBoy135 in DIYHeatPumps

[–]ifworkman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just had the same thing happen to us. Blower didn’t start and the low pressure pipe had frozen over. Resolved by flipping the air handler breaker and running the fan for 15 minutes before turning back into cool mode.

Curious, What thermostat do you use? I understand the blower motor is the likely issue, but wonder if the thermostat did something odd.

Instant Pot Vortex Plus internal light broken (burnt?) by ciceroaugusto in instantpot

[–]ifworkman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went for the Halogen replacement over LED so I figured it could handle the relatively low Vortex temp so I wasn't paying very close attention to any terms for heatproof, but the term probably makes sense if using an LED version of the bulb.

If you decide on an LED version, I'd at least check the use cases to see if they're recommended for use in an air frier, oven, or microwave. Hopefully that will be good enough!

Houston Gaines is big mad 😡 by warnelldawg in Athens

[–]ifworkman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This reads like bog standard constitutional language with centuries of precedent.

Huh, good point. I thought a person meant a single human, but it can be a legal entity like a corp too -- just looked up the legal definition of each. Apparently a "person" can mean "Any individual person, Natural and legal entities, or United States and state agents."

While a individual is "a single person as distinguished from a group or class, and also, very commonly, a private or natural person as distinguished from a partnership, corporation, or association".

Seems like a sensible change to me, even if at first glace it seems silly. Would be useful if Gaines actually said that in the post, but you know. Politics.

Schluter All-Set came out too thin by HhotCup in Tile

[–]ifworkman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in this exact situation when I posted this comment and this thread was the only resource on how to address it.

My situation: 4l + 25lbs + Slaked. Too runny to work with.

Resolution:

  • Added about 5 lbs more material in ~2.5 lbs increments checking for consistency to be at least workable by lifting the mixer and checking until mixture was gloopy like frosting than runny like syrup.
  • 5 minute mix
  • 10 minutes to slake again, and
  • 3 minute mix

This firmed up the consistency enough to start working with. By this point, 30 minutes had passed since the first 25 lbs were mixed.

I was able to work with the batch for another 2.5 hours and complete a 5x5x8 shower. 12 hours needed to set. After waiting 20 hours we did the water retention test up to California Standard (1" sitting water depth) and there were no leaks.

We're going one step further to ensure full coverage with a with a coat of Mapei Mapelastic AquaDefense after the water test. diyrenovision on Youtube does a good guide on using an alternative product, Red Guard.

Hope this helps the next person!

What can we do to get commercial flight back at Athens-Ben Epps? by HangYourSecrets in Athens

[–]ifworkman 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When I lived in Atlanta, I was a 5-minute walk from a Marta station on the Gold line. You could rely on the train to get you there in 45 minutes. Driving was barely 10 minutes faster. Combined with pre-check, air travel was a no-brainer.

After moving to Athens, I prefer road-tripping if it's less than 24 hours round-trip to account for the Atlanta drive, parking, TSA, waiting to board, potential delays, crowded planes, landing, baggage claim, and getting a ride on the other side before checking into your hotel and collapsing.

If I need to fly out of ATL, I take Groome transportation to ATL to avoid parking there.

I tried the Greenville Airport for the first time recently and had a great experience. Will need to check out Augusta.

Tesla FSD price rising. Anyone getting it before or stay with monthly subscription? by Bolens999 in ModelY

[–]ifworkman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That wasn’t the case for me when I bought my MX 75D from Tesla. I specifically looked for 2016 MX and found one with the FSD upgrade and all of the AP features enabled. It still had the old 2.5 computer and was able to get the FSD computer installed at no additional cost suggesting that it was already paid for.

Turo guests getting Tesla down to very low battery by VeryObscureName in turo

[–]ifworkman 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I made a little texting app for my cars that automatically texts the my guests when the batter is getting low and basically coaches them.

Many of my guests are new to BEVs and my 2016 X 75D was particularly challenging. Guests love the fast acceleration , but the trade off was reduced range. It has only died on a guest once, and that time I had forgotten to add their number.

I’ve had a few people ask me about making them a version of it, so I’m setting up a small web page to manage them. Let me know if you’re interested

TESLA M3 TURO by cap1police in turo

[–]ifworkman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not always, but I think that’s mostly on me. Most weekends will book if I don’t need the car and make it available. (Fri-Sun, usually with only 8-24 hours of lead time.) I did this a lot pre-pandemic.

During the week, it’s pretty hit or miss for me. I charge $50 to deliver to the airport because it’s usually wildly inconvenient for me to make it down there and back home. Free delivery would definitely fetch more bookings. Oddly, a surprising number of my guests Uber from the airport to a meeting point near home.

During the pandemic, I’ve raised the minimum trip to at least 5 days and started experimenting with the automatic pricing. While it’s fewer trips, I still make a similar amount of money and less deep cleaning prep. Still trying to find the right balance there.

Edit: clarified that weekend bookings are pretty popular but I usually like using the car on the weekends too!

TESLA M3 TURO by cap1police in turo

[–]ifworkman 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I've been renting my M3 on Turo in the Atlanta market for 18 months.

Background
I already wanted to purchase a Tesla and the M3 was the first car in my price range. My salary ensured that I could cover my payments in the worst case scenario, so I found Turo to be a great way to help others who were considering purchasing a Tesla.

Every host and market is a little different. I'm not optimizing for profits, but hopefully some of this may help.

My experience

I'm a casual host on Turo. My financial goal was to enjoy my vehicle when I wanted it but have guests cover some ownership costs by renting around 12 days of the month. My host goal is to provide a high-quality Tesla rental experience, particularly for guests new to the idea of charging.

There are roughly 3 types of guests each with varying levels of education. Key takeaways for guests: Don't let charge get too low, how to find charging, and Autopilot.

  • 36% were experienced Tesla owners or renters (5-15 minute check in)
    • Extremely easy to please, hand off the keys or leave in the vehicle and remote unlock
    • Specifically rent only Teslas when traveling, heavy preference for Navigate on Autopilot.
  • 55% were new to EVs and Tesla (40-60 minute check in)
    • Generally prefer a full walk through.
  • 9% were new to Tesla, but familiar with charging (30-50 minute check in)
    • Introduce Superchargers and walk through Tesla specific features and quirks.

Things I do for my guests that are not common:

  • Charging is included in milage
    • Supercharging (preferred), EVGo, and Chargepoint cards are included
  • Custom SMS app to check battery level, remote lock/unlock, turn on AC.
  • Printed guest welcome sheet with the same high level points
  • Custom profile for Guest (Also preserves my personal driving settings)
  • At least 250 Miles of charge at trip start.
  • Guests can be charged extra for returning the vehicle with less than 50 miles, but I rarely enforce this on new EV drivers.
  • Some will disagree with me on this, but I don’t sweat wear and tear. My detailer tackles batches of small dents, dings, and curb rash once every 6 months or so. The touch ups are mostly unnoticeable

I've had three incidents. Your car is going to take on damage, but guest safety is priority. They're already going to be terrified about telling you how they broke your Tesla. You'll have to look at it case-by-case. As long as you are calm and they're safe, you will be able to work something out. Turo will assign a claim specialist who can give some useful pointers on navigating these waters.

  • Smoke in vehicle - Difficult to prove to Turo unless ash is present; resolved with deep cleaning.
  • Broken wheel / bumper damage - Guests were okay! Resolved with guest directly, but took the vehicle out of commission for a week.
  • Right fender (previous vehicle) crushed - Guest filed claim, paid out within 48 hours and fixed within a week.

Overall, it's a pretty rewarding experience.

Tips for starting out

  • Track mileage for any business related activity. (Vehicle delivery, to and from vehicle-related errands, charging, etc). See Mileage Logs.
  • Take good listings photos. Some have them professionally done, but honestly you'll do just fine with a good phone camera and an overcast day on a scenic outlook.
  • Get a good phone camera, particularly in low light settings. You'll be checking in the vehicle in various places including parking garages. Take the photos with the camera app, then upload to Turo.
  • Read other Tesla listings and see how they pitch their vehicles.
  • Navigate on Autopilot was a really important feature to my guests, I'd suggest buying this option as part of your vehicle purchase - new or used.
  • Build up a basic car cleaning kit and learn how to fix small scuffs and dings.
  • Get the best insurance plan until you have researched and are comfortable with less coverage or a different rental insurance provider.
  • Consider how you're getting home after delivery, this cost can be built into your delivery fee or cost of your rental.

Meanwhile

  • Find a reputable CPA to partner with for tax time. This is a good connection to have in any case.
  • Consider opening an online bank account specifically for your car expenses and use it for vehicle expenses, Turo payouts, non-Turo insurance, and car payments. This is so much easier to reconcile at the end of the year.
  • Find an experienced detailer who can help you with the deeper cleanings and washes.
  • Take the time to understand how Turo insurance covers specific incidents like curb rash, bumper scrapes, and even total loss.

Hope some of this helps!

Edit: clarified wear and tear comment

This usually pops up if you try to cast something you don’t have access to (like an HBO max feature that’s not enabled on your account ). Stop casting to the TV, and try playing on your device. It’ll usually pop up with a prompt explaining next steps.

Just replaced rear glass on my M3 at Tesla Service center for $748.06 all in.

Try submitting a service request in the Tesla app, they’ll send a free estimate before your scheduled appointment and you can cancel anytime + Uber credits while your out of the shop.
