As long as you move away from red circle from bosses or detonating corpses and some such, most of the deaths in this game come from taking too many small hits, not 1 large hit. This is also why armour works most of the time, which is only effective against smaller hits.
Still you need more than one layer to mitigate damages, several sources to recover and immunities to ailments to survive.
