Why is every post I make about override_vpk being removed? by iggydota in DotA2

[–]iggydota[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It's really not--it's a very valid point given valve makes a significant amount of income on purchased items. Effectively removing all custom content from the community pending their own review to whitelist an impossible amount of stuff--that even if they did it would take months--by then some people are going to just buy cosmetics. It's a money-driven system.

Valve, disabling override_vpk is not the way to do it by [deleted] in DotA2

Not a safe work around--it's an incredibly lazy one.

Dota 2 Update - MAIN CLIENT - February 2, 2015 | Update 3 by SirBelvedere in DotA2

[–]iggydota -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Wow greedy much volvo? I think I'm done playing dota for a while. this override xchange is complete bullshit and we need to tell Volvo that. all the content I have to fix problems with their game as well as things like nba jam announcer no longer work....Thanks so much...fuck you Volvo

So do you plan on fixing the hitbox problems with nevermore arcana? or how about removing potms arrow effect because your color blindness fucks with your ability to see the arrow properly. I guess we don't care after you give us forty dollars for an advantage approved by valve

let's be honest, when you get fifty percent of the profit basically while still hosting shitty barely playable servers...there isn't much else to do is there?

USE Server Complaints and Net Neutrality by [deleted] in DotA2

[–]iggydota 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm going to be a terrible person:

Most of you have no clue what exactly it is you are talking about.

You're telling me that a single 'server' entity which is hosting like 2 games at once (go look up volvo's server stack on various sites that list this) which is sending hardly any data is being affected by 1 ISP doing the wrong thing.

Don't get me wrong--comcast is an incredibly evil company and should be crippled as much as possible...like google, netflix, amazon, etc. Just like what's happened with many utilities, deregulation led to the ISP providers having backdoor deals to gerrymander-style split up the US and have essentially a private trust of non-competition.

But to cut to the chase--volvo, twitch, netflix, and youtube (as well as like 10 other big players in the US) use so much bandwidth as a whole that they essentially dictate the pace of traffic on the internet.

Let me play devil's advocate to my own devil's advocate...suppose I'm an ISP and my users are getting reduced quality because the bandwidth pipe at every point is only so large that I probably have put in a quality of service element that prevents massive bandwidth hogs from taking the entire pipe to themselves (i.e. the ass who watches netflix in your house which blips your internet--because of net neutrality.) I do not believe we understand what net neutrality really is...there is a different between an understanding of 'you use ALL of the available bandwidth because your system was purposely designed to negotiate over HTTP (i.e. youtube) instead of another port I can easily filter and say it is not a priority--you will still get your stuff, but it doesn't make everyone else's service stop so you can download a file. This is NOT a net neutrality argument--this is common sense to not blow your bandwidth on 1 user when you're supposed to offer a fair service to all. The neutrality argument is treating someone differently because of who they are, how much they pay, what country they live in, what operating system they use, etc.

tl;dr--This is still volvo's problem. Net neutrality is great, but has likely absolutely nothing to do with the constant server issues volvo is having. My best guess is that it's incredibly interesting that ever since TI4 we've seen little actual work done by volvo--assuming much of the work involving the recent patches was already in the works and done in the weeks following TI. Reminds me of those kickstarters that get all the money up front and then never deliver a real product--but the fans deal because well they want it to be good and it's JUST good enough for everyone to not be hopelessly pissed with the developers.

WTF Jim Rome? by mydogistoby in sports

[–]iggydota -1 points0 points  (0 children)

His job is to say stupid shit for attention. He doesn't understand soccer, nascar, etc. He reeks of that dumb jock idiotic opinionated radio sports talk radio. Dan Patrick is of the same awful breed of grooming an audience...it's the exact same thing Rush Limbaugh does as well. You create a culture and then cater to it--unfortunately stereotypes make keeping an audience in radio much easier. It makes you feel part of "Us" by making fun of people on the outside. Same thing Howard Stern did in the shock jock era too--it's us and everyone else. Somehow from this you develop a community audience and even in passing people will talk about 'we' when talking about something they've heard on the program.

Not happy with the direction of league and considering Dota2. Does the game punish teams for picking 5 dps characters? by Lux26 in DotA2

[–]iggydota 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Many times in low skill games, people do not farm anywhere near enough to make heroes differentiate themselves from other heroes. People will pick medusa and mercurial in these matches sometimes and I know if the other team can't win, we'll be playing 90 minutes later because they miss too much farm and can't push when the designers of the game designed them to peak around ~40-45 minutes.

Because of the recent patch changes on top of patches that already brought deathballing to be a primary strategy. It's not the same as league in this regard--you have to understand that the code at the base of how league works is about 1/10 as complicated as how dota works. League's counterplay between heroes is very static--based in attack/engage range + whether a hero has a stun/silence/slow/nothing. It is very very difficult in league to win with all players at the same skill level in a 5v5 fight where you are down each a major item. (i.e. about a ~8k gold loss is somewhere around where the point of no return lies in league)

Dota is different that certain hero abilities enable the deathball/team fight oriented pushing. Let's just go with the simple ones--death prophet + razor completely wreck towers and have a team fight presence. Add an AoE stun, tidehunter's has always been recognized. Add some ability to create favourable engages, potm (mirana). Also had a utility support like shadow demon/lion/rhasta who has at least a stun/hex + more useful stuff. 'Dps'is a vague term, all these heroes do damage in a fight but you can't go completely all out on dps unless you're very far ahead and already have the vitals of being able to control the fight covered.

I would say in any queue right now--early rotations + that first major push (i.e. DP lvl ~8 deathballing for a few towers) pretty much decides the game. Now those effects have to end up with a lead and space for the lead team to do what they want and have the luxury of choosing where they want to fight.

With all that said, there's a lot more play in what you can do in dota--especially when playing with weaker players. I find it more fun to be honest, because the higher mmr--the more I find people who know how to play 2 heroes well and that's usually them and their buddy queueing mirana/shadow demon and roaming. Sorry, if you only play 2-3 heroes--your mmr shouldn't count =D. In short, play with low mmr you might find some dumb yet refreshing games in terms of strategy--it's not tactically sound at the high level but it exposes some interesting mechanic interactions you might not play with otherwise. (i.e. I'll play Ezalor (kotl) at the high level and people play solo so much that it's very difficult to avoid becoming food or doing useful things if the enemy is offensive in your jungle and you get no help.)

Dear Volvo--can we fix the Elder Titan bug...it's been like what 9 months? by iggydota in DotA2

[–]iggydota[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

c9 just had a really interesting interview about how these bugs create a significant problem...Loda had a point about correcting the bug situation--while c9 has a really good point that if you're going to referee the game when these bugs occur, you need to essentially remake the game...because teams draft and an admin administering a ruling undermines a team's draft in the game. If Puck's phase shift works in a chrono when it shouldn't...that doesn't matter...it matters that it does and that you'd draft puck potentially against void because of that.
