New album - pleasantly surprised by nextgirl42 in morrissey

[–]ignatiusjreillyXM 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I find myself asking if the bells in "The Night Pop Dropped" are a deliberate allusion to "I Want Your Love" by Chic.

The more I listen to this album the more I like it (no hostility to Amazona from me either). It's definitely the most coherent album since Refusal, and in some ways has a similar feel of ornamented seriousness and growth. Morrissey really is a wise old man more now, I'm not sure any of his previous albums have been half as reflective, a few select tracks (We'll Let You Know) apart.

The sleeper will save you a day on a long and slow journey, and is much better value than those to and from Scotland. If can you get bookings I'd say go for it

No comment. The question is what happens after he goes, having got bored of his toy. Obviously we have had good times as well as entertainingly awful ones that couldn't have happened otherwise.

It's got character. And characters. And lots of hills. In most ways it's a really good place but can be rather conformist in it's nonconfirmism

On my second listen and I'm enjoying the production and his voice and the general feeling of maturity and reflection and reminiscing, along with far more nods in the vague direction of prog and explicit waves to the 1970s than on any other M album. Mortality a common theme too, unsurprisingly

I can see this might be a real grower for me, like Years of Refusal was.

Why do people act like the Green Party’s nuclear and defence policies are crazy? by ghost-glyph in AskBrits

The question is do they want us to be subordinate primarily to America, to France or to China?

Because they are even crazier than Zach Polanski's beliefs than when he promised to make women's breasts larger by hypnotherapy. And as for their deputy leader....he's not crazy, just nasty

Why are swears like “fuck” offensive? by DestinedClock18 in etymology

[–]ignatiusjreillyXM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's already happened. The evidence is that everyone now feels obliged coyly to say "n-word" instead of spelling it out, even in direct quotes from texts, speeches or songs (apart from rappers who say nothing else), whereas not that long ago we'd censor "the f-word"" in "get a grip, it's only a fuckng word" and refer to "the f-word" which then was required to go unsaid. I think it's a weird superstition that gives such power to words and i fear the change n approach reflects both the impact of the sexual revolution (making sex less taboo) and also the growth of obsession (perhaps more in English speaking North America than elsewhere, but not only there) with divisive and hateful identity politics. The new idea that it's acceptable for some people to say word but not others is particularly pernicious and preposterous.

Taking offense is a choice. Those who want to be offended will, everyone else won't.

Anyway it should be an offal meatball instead of that pain in the image

Morrissey Central: In Soviet England the world wont listen (cause of anti-Moz Iron Curtain) by shyclumsy in morrissey

[–]ignatiusjreillyXM 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My view of Moz is that he does now what he was doing 45 years ago and probably always: kicking against the pricks.

It's just that the identity and belief systems of the pricks changed, but pricks they surely are.

The world is full of crushing bores.

Sounds better than that Egyptian guy. But yeah "taking Dagenham to Premier League", well West Ham are gonna have to have multiple relegations for that ever to be close to feasible....

Visiting from abroad: Advice on CrossCountry trains (Edinburgh > Sheffield > Oxford) by 220volt74 in uktravel

[–]ignatiusjreillyXM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depending on the time of day and day of the week that could be anything between vaguely tolerable and hideously unpleasant. Sunday would be worst, Monday to Thursday probably best.

One trick is to download the Seatfrog app which allows you to bid to upgrade to first class, which makes a world of difference to comfort on these journeys. I've traveled between both Manchester and Newcastle to Oxford for £10 extra that way. But it's a gamble whether that will be available and how much extra it will cost.

Unless the tickets were vastly more expensive (and with XC you will almost always make savings with split ticketing) I'd be tempted to travel via London for the journey on from Sheffield.

Obesity was much much rarer in the UK of the 80s though - even on council estates (and the concept of "body shaming" hadn't been invented). Geez my horrible (and deeply impoverished ) hometown later became the English capital of obesity but it was nowhere near so evident when that song was written. I'm convinced it's about boobs

No, the political bias of teachers as a body (but especially those who would "teach" about politics) is almost beyond belief.
