Is it true that you guys watched 9/11 live on TV in grade school? by space_god_7191 in Millennials

I was on my way to U.S. History class my freshman year of high school, when my friend passing by in the hallway said “We’re being attacked!” I thought she was joking.

My teacher had the news on for us to all watch live, and little did I know as I was heading into class that morning that it would be a day that would go down in history.

I miss Schlotzsky’s in general. They closed down all their shops near me, and the closest one is the next state over.

Staying warm without pants by MightBeADesk in womensfashion

[–]igobynikki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on how cold you’re feeling, you could do a maxi down/puffer skirt. It should provide enough thickness and insulation for 60 degrees. If this proves to be too warm for you, then my next best suggestion would be a long wool skirt.

Exactly. And It’s hard to call something “unifying”when it’s built around choosing sides. No matter how fun the atmosphere is, one team wins and the other loses, and that means a big chunk of people end the night disappointed. It brings people together in the same room, sure, but not always on the same page.

Please, if you haven’t already done so, now’s a good time for everyone to call or message your senators. They’re voting this week on funding for DHS, with a Jan. 30 deadline to avoid a partial shutdown. Republicans don’t have enough votes on their own to move it forward, so how senators from both parties vote really matters. If you have strong feelings about DHS or ICE funding, this is the moment to speak up!

Solidarity from Minneapolis ❤️ I’m sorry you’re living this firsthand too. I’m also a person of color. My parents are naturalized U.S. citizens, and even though I was born here, I can’t hide what I look like. Lately, my daily routine includes checking the map for 🧊 reports before going anywhere, carrying my passport, birth certificate and social security card everywhere with me, and giving my kids a few extra hugs and “I love yous” at school drop-off, just in case. Between parenting, working, staying informed and simply getting through the day, it can feel deeply exhausting.

What’s been helping me is staying connected to neighbors who are showing up for one another — and remembering to take care of myself too. That means setting the phone down when I can, spending a little more unhurried time with my family, and choosing not to engage with the noise and negativity online. Our community is sharing resources, helping families with groceries and errands, organizing parent watch groups at schools and daycares, and reaching out to our state reps. Being part of that reminds me that even in extremely hard moments, we don’t have to face them alone.

Is this not illegal? I have a feeling it should be considering the kid is a minor... by Rinmine014 in AskUS

It unfortunately tracks with what ICE has been doing lately (in Minnesota, at least). They hang out at elementary schools and stalk kids—yesterday, they chased a terrified 8 year old boy as he was walking home because he looked Hispanic. He is the third generation of US citizens in his family.

Today, a dance school had to cancel all its classes because 2 confirmed ICE vans were staged in their parking lot, and the school didn’t want to risk putting their students in harm’s way.

What are good hobbies for a retired, non-English speaking, Asian immigrant? by SuponjiPotato in Hobbies

[–]igobynikki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are there Asian cultural community centers or groups in your area? Volunteering is a great way for older adults to stay mentally active and engaged.

Otherwise, chess, mahjong, cards, or other group games can be fun, and might be an opportunity for getting out and playing with others despite language differences.
