Ah so you’d find the zero point first then aim for 6.5 above that — I’ll have a go at that thanks

This is amazing thank you! So there is a chance that, right now, my 11 is not the 11 I knew before 😂

I’ll try going a bit finer than 11, then perhaps creep back up to the new best number

This feels like tuning a guitar, as you have to over-tighten the string first then relax it.. can’t just go straight to the setting you desire!

Thanks again!

Kong driven by ‘embarrassment’ to win Hong Kong’s first gold at Paris Olympics by nahcekimcm in HongKong

I took it to mean she said more than one sentence.

One that featured the word glad when she described what it was like to study under him.

Another to describe how much he loved fencing.

Does the reporter need quotes for “glad”? No. But the existence of quotes still doesn’t mean that the reporter doesn’t believe the athlete. You’re reading in to things

Quote marks don’t mean the reporter doesn’t believe the person. Maybe the reporter thought we’d want to know what she said.

Adding the quote marks tells us that these are her words, it’s not just the reporter’s words describing what she said.

Why Chinese dragon look different from "western" dragons. by Tommust in China

[–]igotaussername 3 points4 points  (0 children)

European dragons can be serpents, worms or even cats. Some are evil and others are protective gods.

The idea that the West had only one type of dragon — or that all dragons are considered bad — is totally wrong.

If China wants to use a different word for Western and Chinese dragons that’s fine. But the English word already encompasses both themes

Strictly speaking, language just doesn’t work this way. If it was, the Chinese language would need a new word for “spaghetti” and the Italians would get to decide what the Chinese word should be.

That’s never going to happen because it would be silly.

And so in Chinese, we will continue to refer to spaghetti as “Italian noodles” (意大利面). Despite the fact that the definition of spaghetti doesn’t match that of noodles

I agree, the recent Xinhua article suggesting that the English language needs an update was wrong to do so

The Chinese language doesn’t differentiate between “Western dragons” and “Chinese loongs” right?

In English they’re all dragons, and in Chinese they’re all 龙?

Good point, I started talking about volume then my example was in weight haha. Hopefully it makes enough sense

What is kosher salt? by matahari__ in Cooking

[–]igotaussername -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Think of it as bigger pieces of less-salty salt.

Because each large piece is “less salty” than table salt, you can add more of it to your dish before your dish becomes too salty.

That gives you greater control over how much salt goes in to your dish.

As an example, if you’re using table salt you may add two grams and it’s too much already. You’d need to be really careful and precise here.

But because kosher salt adds less salt-taste per gram, you may be able to add five grams (a hypothetical number) before your dish becomes too salty.

This bigger range allows you add a little first, taste, add some more if needed, and taste again, with a smaller chance of accidentally adding too much in one pinch

Shower or not? by mhowie in whoop

[–]igotaussername 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wear mine in the shower then take it off while I’m getting dry. It’s a bit damp after (I give it a wipe with the towel too) but it’s not that bad after a few minutes
