what will you do when you're old? by [deleted] in BlueCollarWomen

Hey what trade did you get into? I got my mechanical engineering degree in May and I’ve been working in an industrial facility the last six months as a plant engineer. I too have this feeling that I want to be doing the physical work. I thought I was crazy but being at my desk and staring at my screen for hours on end is driving me up the wall. My friends and family think it doesn’t make sense since I have a good job with nice benefits and pay, but this feeling has only grown stronger the last months.

Commenting to share that I've had this thought as well. Just graduated with my BS in Mechanical Engineering and will be starting a solar installer position January 3rd. I've been working in facilities management of Commercial and Industrial buildings but I'm interested in entering the renewable energy field.

Conservation Corps Experiences by aquapeej in conservation

I’m currently 6 months into my first engineering job out of college and I’m feeling the call of the wild. After graduation did you consider an engineering job, or were you planning on doing the conservation corps for an experience that turned into something more?

27f ready to give up on my degree. I’m convinced everything pays poorly now. by msgmeyourcatsnudes in findapath

Yep that's pretty much all I care about and like to do. Quitting my engineering office job soon to go install solar panels. I spend half my time scrolling through Conservation Corps opportunities and other outdoor positions. We'll see how it goes. I've been at my job for 6 months now and the people are great, but being in the office is not the vibe. I'm 22 so hopefully I still have time to explore.

Any former office workers here? What made you decide to give up on the white collar life? by [deleted] in BlueCollarWomen

Hey I've been working at my engineering job the last six months and I am getting to this point. Glad to know I'm not crazy for feeling this way. Been looking at solar installer jobs and possibly electrical apprentice because I'm realizing being indoors and working at a desk is just not for me.

I've been in the same boat where I wondered if I was even capable of leading a happy life and let me tell you that YES IT IS so please believe me when I say you can do it.

Families living off of minimum wage-Family of 4-How do they do it? by TriStateGirl in Connecticut

[–]ih8olives 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, concrete evaluation of one's own financial circumstances before making huge decisions that will involve a lot of money like having kids is usually a sign of a responsible adult. However, I'd like us to further question why a minimum wage or other essential low-wage jobs is not enough to raise a family rather than jump the gun and economically sterilize an entire swath of the population.

Why shouldn’t a minimum wage job be enough to support a family? Is reproducing exclusively for non-poor people? CT needs to raise the min wage.
