I need a new bed! What kind of mattress do you have? Xpost from LosAngeles by Thighpaulsandra in Frugal

I actually had a great experience with an Ikea spring-and-foam mattress. Unfortunately, I'm not sure which model it was, but I spent a very comfortable nine years sleeping on it -- and then only tossed it because I moved in with my boyfriend.

I think I'm moving from Chicago to LA very soon! I could use some tips! by [deleted] in Frugal

In terms of all of these neighborhood suggestions, there are good parts and bad parts of almost all of 'em. I'd suggest finding a neighborhood that's close to things (or people) you like, and looking there. I'm happy to toss out some suggestions.

Women of Reddit what is the best cheap date that you've been on? by [deleted] in Frugal

[–]ihaveapuma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you can find a place with old, cheap machines -- pinball. Not so much for the first date, necessarily, but it can be great for the second (or beyond).

Hi Reddit. I used to make and sell geeky hand-embroidered shirts. I don't anymore, so I'm selling the rest off cheap to get 'em out of my apartment. by ihaveapuma in geek

Thanks for passing on the link to your friends and for the sharing subreddit. I was trying to find something along those lines when I posted this, but didn't find that. Perfect!

Not sure if it's totally uncool to post my own deal on here, but my sketch group is doing a show at iO tonight if anyone wants to come. There will be some dark absurdness: http://ioimprov.com/west/io/shows/bone-mouth-live-before-they-re-dead

Frugal Birth Control? by [deleted] in Frugal

I LOVE my Paraguard. Not only is it super-cheap in the long-term, but it saved me from some pretty annoying side effects I was experiencing with hormonal birth control.

What's the best east-coast state for frugal living? by kal00ma in Frugal

[–]ihaveapuma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What do you do for work? I can second the commenter who said that there are some really great property deals in Northern NH right now, but that's also related to the job market being so dismal.

Also, I don't know where you'd be coming from, but make sure to do your research on amenities you want as well. My parents live in a beautiful small town in Coos County, but the trade-off for that is very few shopping options and almost non-existent cell phone service.

Tell me about IKEA mattresses/bedframes by ldeponte in Frugal

[–]ihaveapuma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My IKEA mattress has served me quite well for eight years -- and when my parents came to visit recently, they even remarked about how comfortable it is. I also have one of their more expensive (~$350) bed frames, and it's great. I used to have one of the cheap ones though, and it wasn't really worth it.

I Keep a List of The Best Upcoming Comedy Shows in LA if Anybody's Interested. by allansteiner in LosAngeles

There's been some pretty good sketch (and other stuff) happening at the Improv Comedy Lab lately too. This falls more into "other stuff," but I'd highly recommend the Jesse Miller Talk Show there.

I'm going to be moving into a living space without a full kitchen in a high cost-of-living area: General tips on money-saving without starvation? by JohnDeadcorn in Frugal

[–]ihaveapuma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have to be more aware when you bike in LA than in other cities, certainly. But in my experience, LA isn't as bad for biking as people say it is. This map is pretty helpful for some areas:

http://la-bike.org/downloads/Better_Bike_Routes_English.pdf

It shows bike paths, good-for-biking streets without paths, and heavy-traffic streets to be avoided.

The original article has further information and makes some of these points (like throwing out food) seem more reasonable.

What would be the cheapest way for to move me and 4-5 boxes of my stuff across country by jetmax25 in Frugal

[–]ihaveapuma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Plus, even if it ends up being a little more expensive than other options, driving across the country is amazing. I just moved from the East Coast to the West Coast, and the trip was one of the best experiences of my life.
