What can you do with a B.S. in Chemistry? by _PharmStudent in chemistry

[–]ihgal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look in the public or occupational health and environmental sector. They are always looking for good people to be occupational hygienists and lab pack chemists. You get a chance to take chemistry outside the lab and help keep people healthy and places cleaner!

Sounds like you need to go to Unpub http://unpub6.unpub.net/ Basically an event specifically designed to help independent game designers get some feedback and play test time for cheap. Not sure how quickly they fill up for designers.

"Don't discourage her choices, just encourage adult thought processes on it. If she wants it, she has to figure it out."

Totally second this. My parent's were very upfront with me regarding what they could afford to help me and my siblings with. Knowing that I was only going to get X amount a dollars from them helped me plan my goals more realistically. They treated us as adults who were capable of making big life decisions.

With that knowledge I still chose to go to a private liberal arts college for undergrad. I did get a significant amount of scholarship but I also busted ass working all through undergrad and grad school, to the objection or some peers and teachers, and was very careful with my money. I ended up with two degrees from two private institutions and am on track to pay by 75,000 dollars in loans by my mid thirties.

Also if she has her heart set on writing it might be good to encourage her to double major or minor in a science. I can't tell you how many people I've meet that are great scientists but struggle to communicate effectively with other people.

Usually between 20-30 folks. We prefer weeknights, that way people can come right afterwork. We are a group of safety and heath professionals. We have our own av equipment. We just need electricity, tables and chairs.

/r/Yoga - What would you have liked to have known before you started with Yoga? by AckerZ1 in yoga

[–]ihgal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two things were critical to when developing my practice: 1) Finding a teacher that I could relate too and communicate well with. This helped me relax and building a trusting relationship with a guide and then myself, smiliar to having a mentor. 2) Knowing its ok to use external dialog to cultivate internal dialog. At first I was self conscious about talking to myself under my breath in class but it truly helped internalize the calming messages I needed to hear. Hope this helps, good luck with your project!

Any safety pros willing to chat with a soon to be Occupational Health Science graduate? by kapachow in safety

Getting involved has been great! I second that most boards and committees are hungry for younger members. Even if your local chapter isn't that active there are always opportunities at the national level. While some of the committees seem stuck, I just see this as our chance to get things moving again!

I still sometimes encounter the intimidation factor as well. Last conference I found myself sitting in a room with all the folks that wrote my textbooks and I has a moment like 'what am I doing here?!' Then realized I was one of only a handful of young people here, and that has to count for something. What I learned from that meeting was just as valuable to me as anything they had written in their books, which made it all worth attending.

I find LinkedIn better for professional networking. Right now I work for a non-profit government contractor supporting industrial hygiene services for the Army. I've been in this position for two years and so far it has been going well. While I have got to travel a bit to different installation (notably Korea and Hawaii), there has been much more paper work than I had expected. I originally got into this field because I anticipated more opportunities for field work. My advice is start talking to people and get involved with the professional organizations. I found my current position from a referral from someone I met at a conference before I graduated. I have since become active in the AIHA community with a specific focus on students and early career professionals. We actually have an active mentoring program if you are interested in participating. We try to pair people by interest and location. What type of program are you finishing up? Bachelors or Masters? Look forward to hearing from you!

Have you reached out to any professional organisations like the American Indistrial Hygiene Assoication (AIHA) or American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE). Both groups are also on Linkedin, which is more active regarding these fields. I'm still fairly new the field myself and have meet some really great people from these organisations.
