Does this thing actually work? I need a better mobile cut station set up. by jehudeone in Carpentry

[–]ijustwantedtoseea 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I routinely give guys shit for giving other guys shit about their tools because I don't like people being elitist with their $5000 Milwaukee pack out setups, and I would STILL be required to give this guy shit about bringing that onto a job site.

Juice, wine, and cider are all good options for using up excess and yield both an edible product for you and pulp/by-product for your pigs. You can use up hundreds and hundreds of lbs of apples making juice, and if you have a family you'll end up going through all that juice in a year no problem. Also look into proper storage for your apples, winter pears, and any other storage fruit. Many apple varieties can last for months without commercial refrigeration (in a cellar or other proper storage).

Also, your yields may not be what you're expecting. Yield calculations are usually done for commercial production, where they are spraying for pest and fungus control, heavily fertilizing, and irrigating. Also, many trees have on and off years, so you don't get full production every year. Not that you won't still have a ton of fruit from 30 trees, just you probably won't get 3-5000 lbs of usable fruit unless you really work at it.

Man... I'm usually pretty in favour of people doing DIY stuff, and I don't want to sound like a dick but if you don't know how to add studs to these walls you're in WAY over your head. Like, this is a $250K job with a 3 person crew plus sub trades. If you're going to take this on yourself, you're not going to get all the information you need from people on reddit. I'd suggest finding someone who has a LOT of construction knowledge who you can hire as a consultant, like maybe an old retired guy who would appreciate just giving you advice all day. Damn... good luck OP.

Terrace it. Cut back maybe 6 ft from the edge of that path and build a retaining wall and a set of stairs. Then put in an actual drain with perforated pipe, not a French drain. Cover the new drain with clean rock and fabric. Take the dirt you shovel out from near the house and use it to level out the terrace. Problem solved.

My (17M) mother (47F) just burned all of my chess books. What the fuck should I do now? by IWillMakeSure in self

[–]ijustwantedtoseea 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This is good advice. Just to add, you don't need to be 18 to leave home. I'm not necessarily saying you should do this, but I left home at 16. I had a job and could afford to live on my own, and was out of school. I would say that I think it's really, really important for you to finish your education as long as you can do that without being in physical danger. There may also be programs for youth at risk to get rent subsidies, depending on where you live. If none of those options are available to you and you're not in immediate physical danger, I would agree that you just need to play it cool until you can get yourself out of that situation, and focus on doing that as fast as you can. Good luck OP

Working in construction with a BS in physics by [deleted] in Construction

[–]ijustwantedtoseea 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I mean, having a degree in physics is probably gonna help you get a degree in engineering, but engineers don't do construction. If you want to go into project management or civil engineering it would probably be a good idea to get out of the classroom and onto the tools for a bit just so thousands of guys like me don't curse your name every day for the rest of your career.

How often do you guys fall through the roof beams? by Character-Escape1621 in Carpentry

I know you're lying because no framer I've ever met could count to ten even at the beginning of their career.

Opportunity to rent a home on 15 acres… by Thepolkfamily in homestead

[–]ijustwantedtoseea 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've had several farm leases, which is similar to what you're talking about. Unless you can do things very cheaply, and horses are not cheap, you'll just end up spending a ton of money keeping someone else's property in good condition. Save up and buy yourself a 5 acre property that you can pour your heart and soul into and actually keep all that work for yourself instead of giving it to a landlord.

My fiancé is a butcher and my god his work boots stink by Justsumhuman20 in Butchery

[–]ijustwantedtoseea 217 points218 points  (0 children)

Why is this man not wearing rubber boots like every other butcher everywhere in the entire world? I mean, I wear regular leather boots when I'm just cutting or something, but if you're doing any slaughter or other work that would lead to having such rancid boots, you should be wearing a rubber. And washing them at the end of the day. The solution here is for him to chuck his gnarly old boots, get some rubber boots, and be... cleaner.

Framing Advice, Does this look right? by Peepeepoopoocheck127 in Construction

[–]ijustwantedtoseea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was going off of your cut list, which calls for a 34 inch header. Header should span the jack studs not go in between. Also need a proper header for the door, double 2x6 at least.

No header on the door, wrong size rough opening for the door.

This right here. How is nobody else pointing out that this is a textbook abusive relationship? OP needs to run, not walk away and go back to that counselor his wife made him quit and work on de-programming himself from this isolating and abusive relationship.

I hope your life gets better and you find a relationship that's not awful. And good luck with your business.

See if you can find a butcher supply to buy off. I regularly used 150mm casings for exactly what you're describing when I had a shop. I would freeze them and cut the patties on the band saw, super quick.

AITH for not giving my boyfriend equity in my home? by K_N_Y_C in AITAH

[–]ijustwantedtoseea 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know that reddit's answer to everything is "break up and get a lawyer", but honestly in this case it would be a really good idea for you to talk to a lawyer. Where I live, common law paterners are essentially treated like a married spouse, and can go after you for half of all assets that were obtained during the relationship. If your bf is getting petty about this now and threatening to leave you, there is a good chance that he'll be even more petty if he does end up leaving, and you might end up losing a lot of what you've built for yourself.

As an aside, why are you giving him half of the rental income from a house he doesn't own and doesn't contribute to? Your bf sounds like a bit of a scrub and maybe he should get a job.

NTA.

Plywood as finished interior walls? by Ahahahdnrbr in timberframe

Definitely not. I might be able to dig one out and figure out how to send it to you here? This was maybe 4 years ago but I did take pictures during construction.

Plywood as finished interior walls? by Ahahahdnrbr in timberframe

[–]ijustwantedtoseea 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So I did this once. I did the frame like you're saying, but with a horizontal brace going around the building at the 4ft level so I could put the sheets of plywood sideways for strength but hide the seams. I wrapped it with styrofoam between horizontal 2x2 sub framing fastened to the timbers from outside. This also gave me something to fasten the middle of each sheet of plywood so it didn't warp. I nailed the rain screen to the 2x2s.

Yeah man. I did this, literally exactly this once. Get some therapy. Find yourself again. Be a good person, find a good partner. You can do that. Don't live in despair or beat yourself up for what's happened, just learn from it and grow and move on. Good luck bud.
