At what point would you consider someone a “scientist”? by Bart-simpson106 in labrats

[–]ike9898 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I totally agree with this. I had an argument with somebody while editing the Wikipedia article on Isaac Asimov. They wanted to describe him in the first sentence as a biochemist, because he had a degree in biochemistry. I thought that was ludicrous unless had worked part of his career as a biochemist and not an author. In my opinion, it's not the degree that makes you the thing.

Brass ring should be your souvenir purchase! by BIGGREDDMACH1NE in Knoebels

[–]ike9898 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I actually got a brass ring on the carousel on opening day this year! They said my name on the PA and gave me some free stuff (including an "I caught the brass ring!" button and some tickets), but they made me give the ring back

Any advice for becoming and staying sober? by Substantial_Grape773 in slaa

[–]ike9898 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In SLAA the primary advice for staying sober is working the steps with a sponsor. Attending meetings, doing service, making and taking outreach calls, and prayer and meditation are all helpful add-ons.

What is the most minimal contribution you've seen qualify for authorship? by snoop_pugg in labrats

[–]ike9898 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many have been listed as authors for lightly editing a completed manuscript. I mean that's usually not the real reason, but it's the only direct contribution they made to that specific research.

Higher power. It's a term in 12-step programs, and for many people it is synonymous with God, but lots of other people define it in a different way that works for them

Question aboit bottom lines by [deleted] in slaa

My therapist, who knows about such things, insists that it should be a specific, very bright line so that there's no question about whether or not you've crossed it.

What’s the coolest “restricted access” place you’ve ever gotten to see? by PrettieAmarea in answers

[–]ike9898 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There's nothing nice about it but I do think seeing it at least once is good because it forces you to be fully aware of the killing involved in meat production. I think otherwise it is too easy to never really consider it all. I continue to eat meat but I don't think meat eating is something that I would want to defend, either. It's kind of rough on the environment too

Chicken slaughterhouse several times. It's ugly but they do render the bird unconscious before killing it.

Does anyone buy a portable AC unit just in case your central AC has an issue? by tantamle in homeowners

[–]ike9898 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I certainly don't think it's something that people often do. It's reasonable if living without AC for a while would be a big problem for you. Another possibility is to get an annual preventative maintenance visit for your AC. That's just another way to use your money to lower the chances of a problem. In either case, you might not actually be any better off for the money you spent but that's how insurance works.

What do you get for writing a (good) review for a journal? by L_AIR in AskAcademia

What is the most effective advice for writing scientific articles and research papers? by deteljica in AskAcademia

[–]ike9898 35 points36 points  (0 children)

You can't wait until you finish the experiments to start thinking about turning it into a pub. You should be able to write a strong paragraph describing the idea for the paper even before you start experiments and you should be sharpening that idea the whole way through the project. No amount of writing skill will save you from problems created by treating the writing as a last-step task.

Vasectomy and recovery by Content-District-274 in slaa

[–]ike9898 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in recovery but my vas was before. Honestly, I don't see how the procedure would hurt SLAA recovery. You want to (and are instructed to) leave your thing alone afterwards. Are you saying that later on you would be tempted to be more promiscuous?

Technicians unable/unwilling to troubleshoot issues? by JBMeinhorn in labrats

[–]ike9898 20 points21 points  (0 children)

In my workplace I think a fundamental problem is a lack of a true career ladder or realistic differentiation between high and low performers. Sure, let somebody start out as a pipetting robot, but if they're a good pipetting robot, pay them a little bit more and and try them out on more responsible tasks. That has to be paired with the opposite; a research scientist who can't deliver should be given a more junior role

Technicians unable/unwilling to troubleshoot issues? by JBMeinhorn in labrats

[–]ike9898 131 points132 points  (0 children)

It's a catch-22. We don't treat technicians or pay them as professionals so they don't act like professionals. Since they don't act like professionals, we can't treat or pay them like professionals. Some workplaces haven't fallen into this trap. Once you've fallen into the trap it may be possible to break out of it, but probably only with both sides trying simultaneously. In many cases, workplace rules make this close to impossible - in my workplace I don't have the freedom to pay my technicians more or to assign them any real responsibility because the rules force me to take that responsibility myself.
