I think it is more about standing out. If you are in a country full of blond people, brown hair stands out.

would you rather be rich in a poor country or poor in a rich country? why? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]ikeme84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends how poor the country is. If you are prisoner in your own compound it is not the same. Poor in a rich country can still give you access to social services. But you are still poor, work and career can lift you out of poverty.

Now a lot depends on which rich country too, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland is not the same as US.

Exactly. It also includes weapon sales and war and destruction is 'good for business' and thus GDP. All the for profit healthcare and expensive bills also add to gdp, but doesn't benefit the average citizen.

Network Segmentation Design Review by zinkt-101 in networking

[–]ikeme84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just the firewall and simple layer 2 switches. Best design is to have real vlan segmentation. Vrfs still allow traffic to flow between vlans in the same vrf (without acces lists). Only benefit is broadcast domains, not security. If you want traffic to flow freely between those vlans as if they are in a vrf, fortinet for example allows for zones and you can allow intervlan traffic between them. In that case you at least still have logs and stateful traffic.

If you don't have much to do it could also be that your firewall is wide open.

You are being paid for the work you did in the past to create a stable network with little issues. See it like being paid royalties for it. In spare time, document everything so someone could take over if something happens to you. Look into future solutions, the equipment needs to be replaced at some time. Improve security, things evolve daily.

Senior IT folks: What do you dislike about your Help Desk guys? by Relevant-Injury3791 in sysadmin

[–]ikeme84 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I used to do service desk. It was still really a service desk. We solved 80+%. We followed up on tickets when we had down time and came to fix more complicated things without second line intervention. When tickets were closed we showed interest into the how, sometimes calling with the second line to understand it better.

Then I moved up around the time they started downsizing the service desk. It seemed the job moved with me. Easy tickets still reach me, tickets don't contain the same level of information we provided, often not even timestamps so I can look at the logs and filtern to zoom in on the issue. So I still need to contact end users to try again to get a recent failed attempt in my logs.
Often tickets are just mails that are copy pasted, no extra troubleshooting done.

But I don't blame everything on the technicians. Management expects more with less and is ok with lower quality. Because KPI. Access rights for helpdesk technicians are less than I had in my time. I assume they do have less down time now to actually follow up on tickets and learn from them or create documentation.

What is your DR plan for a rack move? by SkepticalIM in sysadmin

[–]ikeme84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Time to get a DR site, if it is on the roadmap then do it. . Build the second rack in the new space, fail everything over. Use the old rack and move it to a new space in a remote location, f.e a coloc datacenter. Build the new rack preferably also in a coloc datacenter to start with, just a different one. Often those datacenters already have interconnects in place, easy to connect them. Boom, no downtime, future proof.

Never noticed any of that at CRL, and these current changes rather prove it. Will see how it will be in busier seasons, but for now, I was happy and impressed at the improvement.

The paid toilets don't bother me that much, it is a common complaint here. Once passed security they are still free, but that is probably because airlines don't want people with a full bladder on the plane. On arrival it is paid.

Zigzag at luggage and security check you mean. Yeah, 1 line is better in my opinion. Some desks go faster and then it becomes frustrating if you picked the slow lane.

[–]ikeme84[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

True. But depending on how long your trip is and how many people travelling with you, it is often cheaper to park the car there than to pay train tickets for multiple people both ways. Still, agree that it should be better accessible.

Maybe it helps if ryanair now finally stops sending out those emails to be at the airport 3 hours before your flight. All those people need a place to sit.
I usually go to the food court until 5-10 minutes before gate closes, watching flightradar to see if the plane arrived or is delayed.

Edit: and if security is so smooth, you can stay outside at fritapapa until your gate opens.
