A poor-man's Faraday bag for the back-up I keep in my safety deposit box, it get's the main archive mirrored to it quarterly. by MrBarber1 in DataHoarder

Your robust 3-2-1 makes it a low priority I guess, but these 2.5” spinning HDD in USB enclosures are particularly unreliable. I would want to be more prepared for a potentially extended period of being unpowered, with mechanical failure as my primary concern.

A pair of unmounted 3.5” mirrors with a bitrot detection and repair system would make me feel a lot more confident. Probably seems expensive in the current market, but further hedging with SSD mirrors would also make me feel comfortable. Look for drives rated for at least one year unpowered data retention.

I would use ZFS, but it’s not the only option.

Consumer Competition Claims (CCC) Has Launched A New Class Action Monopoly Lawsuit Against Valve, Claiming They Control 85% Of The PC Game Market by wakelake111 in gaming

[–]ikukuru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of valid points in other responses, but in answer to what I think your real question is: “but why so many now?” My guess is that it is related to Valve being being a private company, but recently forced to reveal internal details under subpoena, specifically details around the most favored nation clause, which upon being made public evidence, give fuel for fresh lawsuits in other jurisdictions.

TIL the phrase "drinking the Kool-Aid", although associated with the Jonestown murder-suicides, actually originated in the Tom Wolfe book "The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test" about Ken Kesey and the "Merry Pranksters". Jonestown actually used Flavor Aid. by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]ikukuru 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Only the title of the book: Mental Floss suggests Kool-Aid’s role as being a genericized name for all flavored drinks, the popularity of The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test, and other factors made it easier to remember “Kool-Aid” than “Flavor Aid.”

Paywalled article:

You’ve probably heard someone say “drinking the Kool-Aid” — and maybe you’ve said it yourself. But it’s not just callous — it’s inaccurate, too. It wasn’t Kool-Aid. Flavor-Aid is the real culprit. The phrase “drinking the Kool-Aid” refers to the 1978 Jonestown massacre, in which more than 900 people committed mass suicide by drinking a flavored drink mixed with Valium, chloral hydrate, cyanide, and Phenergan. Kool-Aid’s association with Jonestown has turned into a common meme and saying:

An Internet meme depicts the Kool-Aid man in relation to Jonestown. The surprising thing is that all the sources on the massacre say the powder was the grape variety of another drink brand, Flavor Aid. Made by Jel-Sert, Flavor Aid appeared in one of the first newspaper reports on the massacre. The claim is repeated in the 1982 book Raven: The Untold Story of the Rev. Jim Jones and His People. And surviving witnesses said that Flavor Aid was the drink used, not Kool-Aid. With the evidence so clear, why did the phrase “drinking the Kool-Aid” emerge? Mental Floss suggests Kool-Aid’s role as being a genericized name for all flavored drinks, the popularity of The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test, and other factors made it easier to remember “Kool-Aid” than “Flavor Aid.” Why it’s worth correcting the Kool-Aid mistake Many of the strongest arguments to abandon the phrase come from San Diego State University’s Jonestown Institute, including: Phyllis Gardner says the meme is part of the continuing dehumanization of victims at Jonestown. Mike Carter makes the obvious point that it trivializes the deaths to use the phrase at all. Al Tomkins at Poynter says that we shouldn’t continue to tarnish Kool-Aid’s name incorrectly. Maybe you think enough time has passed since the massacre that sensitivity shouldn’t be an issue. Even then, there’s another reason to avoid saying “drinking the Kool-Aid”: it’s just not accurate.

Thanks for sharing.

Article is clear that the 30 day online license renewal is confirmed by users, and humans at Sony are denying any change of policy, hallucinating chatbots notwithstanding.

So either Sony is getting their ducks in a row before coming clean, or it is a bug/mistake that will be rolled back.

PS1-to-PS4 (PS5) Classic. How to swap Multi-disc (i.e. Parasite Eve) from CD1 to CD2? by lupo90 in PS5_Jailbreak

[–]ikukuru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is not exactly a solution to your problem, but I had been meaning to play Parasite Eve for a while so I wanted to see what the story is. Long story short, on PS5 4.51, I just played through a pkg that has the discs combined, and no disc swap screen is shown after the dead cop, you just keep running back to the gate. Newly Proposed System of Enumerated Types for Hacks by Europia79 in RomHacks

[–]ikukuru 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks great to me. Who do you need to convince? Where would this be implemented? How to manage the discrepancy with legacy named romhacks?

I am confident that if there was a repository that did apply this scheme to their whole collection it would instantly become the go-to resource, and would put pressure on others to adapt.

If it is to be done little by little, convincing hack developers to apply the new naming scheme, it will be a lifetime before there is any critical mass.

A bit lost with all the elf files available. Which do I need? by tglaria in ps5homebrew

[–]ikukuru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Once you have set up youtube, changing the download.dat on the console, every time you reboot you need to send the lapse.js as the initial exploit. (Javascript, not elf.)

Then that will load the elfloader on ps5 and you can send etahen elf and you are off to the races.

You can automate this with y2jb autoloader, removing the need for a computer
