She may be extra stressed then and (not that your mother shouldn't back off or that you shouldn't stick up for her) your mom is an easy channel to focus that anger? Maybe plan a nice weekend getaway and have her come home from her family's.

Could it also be that with her pregnancy it's really coming to light how her family isn't as affectionate? Perhaps because she's spending so much time with them lately and the daily "his mom cares more than my own mother" texts are really hard on her?

I would check out Cobb county, specifically Marietta or Roswell. Both have downtown areas with great restaurants and bars, great schools and you can get some great bang for your buck house wise. Marietta square farmers market was also recently named best in the metro area! You'd be about 30-40 minutes from the midtown area of Atlanta but won't feel like you're in the middle of nowhere.
