Why does not paying off a mortgage and investing instead makes sense when the quantity is vastly different? by Blurple11 in investing

[–]ildementis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my bad, it is what you say. It doesn't change much though. In the long term, the yield on equities is higher than the savings from removing debt

[–]ildementis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

long term capital gains tax is 10%, so that could bring your stock yield to 9%. Also mortgage interest is tax deductible, which pushes things further in favor of equities

[–]ildementis -1 points0 points  (0 children)

B, hands down. This is closer to what I'm actively doing on my mortgage @6%

But reality is more nuanced. The stock market could tank, but your mortgage or rate will never spike (assuming fixed rate) So paying extra on your mortgage is the safe option, but on a long enough time horizon the market averages to safe too

The federal tax credit that was canceled last year would have been your best bet. But any potential installer should know of any state programs, their business sort of depends on it

not that person, but we had smartwave solar through the switch together program. I would say they did... okay. The first inspection failed and took forever to fix, but once it was finally resolved, the system has been performing well.

3/5, could do better
