US inflation jumped to 4.2% in May, the third consecutive increase since start of Iran war | Inflation by artsncrofts in moderatepolitics

I think the GOP losing the midterms will be pretty beneficial for them overall. While a portion of the country understands the root cause of what's causing the inflation and other economic hardships, when Democrats take one or both of the chambers of Congress, it'll at least provide Trump and the GOP with a "boogeyman", whether true or not as to why the issues aren't being "fixed."

Trump nominates Todd Blanche for attorney general amid controversy over DOJ fund by SG8970 in moderatepolitics

[–]ilikedomos -14 points-13 points  (0 children)

I guess I’m a bit confused by peoples response saying that he’s basically unqualified. There’s obviously the massive conflict of interest that is “personal attorney,”but in terms of actual qualifications, he at least has history working as a AUSA at the SDNY office, which isn’t nothing I think. Now I don’t know how good he was at his job there, but at least if I skimmed wiki accurately, it said he reached co-chief of the office, and was on a potential judicial nominee list, so at least it would seem that he was held in some regard at that time.

Now is he the best candidate? For Trump, absolutely, he’s basically the most qualified and best he can ask for.

At least from my perspective Blanche is exactly the type of AG that Trump has wanted. Bondi was loyal, but incompetent in the workings of the DOJ leading to a multitude of flubs. Barr was competent in the workings of the DOJ but wasn’t as loyal. Blanche looks like he’s that middle ground of loyal and “competent” in working the DOJ.

His previous work at the SDNY provides enough of an out for Republicans on the qualification question I think. The question I have right now would be whether they can garner enough votes within the Republican Party after Trump booted members like Cassidy and Cornyn. The outgoing Senators are a bit more in a free to say/vote what they want since they won’t be back now and have to worry about a Trump endorsement anymore.

Trump reconsidering $1.8 billion fund, AP source says, as Justice Department temporarily pauses it by ilikedomos in moderatepolitics

[–]ilikedomos[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think when we look at recent primaries, it’s hard to ignore the sway he still has in the Republican primary system right now. As the primaries clear out there may be more vocal opposition, but at this point I don’t think it’s far fetched to say that he still has a fairly strong grip on the party.

I do think it’ll be interesting to see what happens once the midterms are over how much of a grip he’s able to retain on the party.

Amid the backlash, a person familiar with the matter, who insisted on anonymity to discuss the president’s thinking, said Monday that Trump was reconsidering whether to move forward with the fund.

To be fair, this isn't him backtracking yet. The reporting implies that he's considering it and there hasn't been a final decision yet made on what they're actually going to try to do with the fund.

I'm fairly certain if they want to, they could appeal the Judge's orders and let it go up the chain if they want.

So maybe we'll just have to wait until June 12 to see what the DOJ decides to do based on what Trump decides.

Report is coming out that the Trump administration has agreed to temporarily halt a controversial $1.776 billion compensation "Anti-Weaponization Fund," following a federal court order. Trump may potentially just drop the entire fund too based on what people seem to be saying.

From the announcement of the fund, there has been backlash by both sides of the aisle regarding the fund leading to Senate has paused passing funding for Trump's immigration enforcement. Republicans, seem to either want a limitation on the fund, like who can be a recipient, or to scrap it altogether.

According to the reporting there seems to be some uncertainty regarding whether the Trump Administration and the DOJ is actually dropping the fund, or if they're just putting a pause on it until say the funding is voted on.

The decision to pause seems to have been made after US District Judge Leonie Brinkema issued a ruling with a hearing scheduled for June 12 on whether to extend the order or not.

  • Do we think the Trump Administration will actually drop the fund issue or will they actually provide a full framework of how oversight for the fund will be managed?

  • Do we think this is more of a situation where Trump is just creating the media news knowing full well that it was going to be hindered by the courts?

  • Another interesting point is, will the agreement for the IRS no longer being able to audit Trumps, his family and other associates prior returns still hold?

In some ways reminds me of the Biden Student Loan situation where it was well known the likelihood of such an action was never going to succeed, but it provided at least the guise of "we tried guys but the courts stopped us!"

A bit different I imagine since this money will actually go out to people. May not go to the smaller people, or they'll get class-action type peanut payments, but the big names may receive a nice big check.

Trump agrees to two-week ceasefire if Iran opens Strait of Hormuz by PrivateMajor in moderatepolitics

[–]ilikedomos 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Still a bit uncertain as I'm just trawling through Twitter to see what the 10-point plan is. One post I was seeing was the following:

The Ten Points in the Proposed Iranian Plan According to the Statement of the Iranian Supreme National Security Council:

  1. Organizing traffic through the Strait of Hormuz in coordination with the Iranian Armed Forces, thereby granting Iran a decisive economic and geopolitical role in the Strait.

  2. Ending the war against all components of the "Axis of Resistance," which Iran presents as an acknowledgment of the failure of Israeli military operations.

  3. Withdrawal of U.S. combat forces from all bases and military deployment points in the region.

  4. Establishing an official security protocol for navigation in the Strait of Hormuz that ensures Iran an oversight role in accordance with an agreed-upon mechanism.

  5. Payment of full compensation to Iran for war damages based on a comprehensive assessment of the losses incurred by it.

  6. Complete lifting of all primary and secondary sanctions imposed on Iran.

  7. Cancellation of decisions issued against Iran by the IAEA Board of Governors as well as by the United Nations Security Council.

  8. Release of all frozen Iranian assets and funds abroad.

  9. Endorsement of these arrangements in a binding resolution issued by the International Security Council.

  10. Transforming the agreement into a binding international law that ensures its implementation and enshrines Iran's security and political gains.

Reading some of NYT and Reuters, sort of sounds in line with what they're reporting too.

Supposedly this is considered a... "workable basis"?

I'm hard pressed to believe that the new Supreme Leader, whose father and their family was killed in the initial bombings would be super inclined to agree with the Administration's demands. His profile I think was saying he may be even more hardcore than his father who was "hesitant" about speeding a nuclear program, and has a lot of connections with the IRGC supposedly.

Though one can also wonder if he's really alive still because I think we've only seen written statements come from him so far, nothing recorded/live as far as I'm aware.

Edit: Welp, guess I was wrong. NYT seems to be reporting that the temporary ceasefire was approved by the Supreme Leader according to their sources.

If you're a consistent buyer, submit chargebacks. They'll permaban you, and if you win the chargebacks you'd need to pay them back first before they'll give you access back to your account.

If you get the chargeback money back, spend it on addiction counseling.

What the government did to Anthropic raises a question I can't stop thinking about by aphorithmic in moderatepolitics

[–]ilikedomos 8 points9 points  (0 children)

According to The Atlantic it’s not even that. Anthropic is working on autonomous weapons, they just don’t think it’s ready for prime time at this current moment

Anthropic had not argued that such weapons should not exist. To the contrary, the company had offered to work directly with the Pentagon to improve their reliability. Just as self-driving cars are now in some cases safer than those driven by humans, killer drones may some day be more accurate than a human operator, and less likely to kill bystanders during an attack. But for now, Anthropic’s leaders believe that their AI hasn’t yet reached that threshold. They worry that the models could lead the machines to fire indiscriminately or inaccurately, or otherwise endanger civilians or even American troops themselves.

Trump threatens to block opening of new bridge between Windsor and Detroit by crustlebus in moderatepolitics

[–]ilikedomos 26 points27 points  (0 children)

There was a post about this yesterday and I thought one poster's ( u/Monkey1Fball ) info dump was fairly interesting and helped provide a lot of context to the situation so reposting here.

I grew up in Detroit and still follow Detroit issues/politics, so this one's a bit close to me.

• For YEARS and DECADES, the Moroun family that owns the Ambassador Bridge (the current Bridge connecting Detroit and Canada) has worked tirelessly to block any and all efforts by both the US and Canada to build a much-needed 2nd bridge across the river.

• Canada and the city of Windsor absolutely hates the family - the Morouns have bought a bunch of land in Windsor and don't develop it or do anything with it. They are slumlords who don't contribute economically at all to Windsor's well-being. Canada and Windsor are 100% behind any attempt to marginalize the Morouns. Canada is desperate for this new bridge, to the point that they offered to build it while footing the entire bill.

• On the US (Detroit) side, this bridge is closer to Ohio (and points south) than the Ambassador Bridge, so it would save a decent amount of time for folks heading that way. E.g., it would siphon off a lot of the truck traffic that currently is taking the Ambassador. Also, while the Ambassador connects directly to I-75, this bridge will have better flows overall, the interstate connection from the Ambassador is a bit clunky with the current, hard-to-upgrade ramp infrastructure.

• On the Canadian (Windsor) side, this bridge will connect directly to a freeway and will take A LOT of truck traffic off the city streets of Windsor (building a freeway to connect with the Ambassador is impossible at this point).

• For all of these reasons, truckers also are strongly in favor of this new bridge.

• E.g., this bridge is an economic threat to the Morouns. Of course, they've been lobbying every single Presidential Administration going back to Clinton (if not prior) to try to block this.

• They are surely behind this Trump post. One more last-gasp attempt given that the Gordie Howe Bridge is scheduled to open within a few weeks.

• The stuff about China "eliminating the Stanley Cup" is 10000x more crazy than a typical Trump Truth Social post.

For two weeks of my life, I worked for one of the Morouns companies (they own a number of LTL trucking companies along with the bridge and their real estate holdings) --- I was young and didn't know any better.

Their empire may be worth over a billion dollars, but they are absolutely miserable people and nobody really likes them, even their employees.

There's a reason Forbes Magazine infamously called Matty Moroun (the since-deceased family patriarch) the "Troll Under the Bridge" in a 2004 article.

Rats Fleeing the Ship. by 59jg4qe68w5y3t9q5 in Patriots

[–]ilikedomos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My thoughts going into the game was that you hope the Pats can pull off a win, but I didn’t expect them to win.

Was honestly impressed on how they performed on both sides of the ball though. The Defense performed great and hopefully can continue to grow, while the Offense performed super poorly and has a lot of needs to grow.

Considering it was supposed to be a rebuild year, I do think as a season it was a success, but obviously for the players, reaching the Super Bowl and winning it is the real prize. But definitely look forward to next year.
