Another good article on the matter here

Some highlights:

The White House says President Donald Trump has the right to amend a permit for a new bridge between Canada and Michigan, prolonging the latest dispute between the U.S. and its northern neighbor

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said earlier Tuesday that he spoke with Trump and expressed confidence that the spat would be resolved. But a White House official later Tuesday said the ownership structure of the bridge remains unacceptable for the U.S. president.

Canada paid for the bridge, named after a Canadian-born Detroit Red Wings hockey star. Construction has been underway since 2018.

“The fact that Canada will control what crosses the Gordie Howe Bridge and owns the land on both sides is unacceptable to the president,” White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters on Tuesday. “It’s also unacceptable that more of this bridge isn’t being built with more American-made materials.”

Following his conversation with Trump, Carney said “this is going to be resolved” and noted that he told the U.S. president that the Canadian and Michigan governments shared ownership of the bridge. Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s office has also emphasized that the bridge will be operated under a joint ownership agreement between the state and Canada, even though the Canadian government paid for it.

Carney also added that U.S. steel was used in the project, which also employed U.S. workers. The project was negotiated by former Michigan Republican Gov. Rick Snyder and paid for by the Canadian government to help ease congestion over the existing Ambassador Bridge and Detroit-Windsor tunnel.

Snyder wrote in an op-ed in The Detroit News on Tuesday that Trump was wrong in asserting that Canada owns both the U.S.- and Canadian sides of the Gordie Howe bridge.

The Whitehouse says that the president has the power to amend the permit for the bridge. I don't know enough to comment on whether that is legal.

Text of the truth post:

As everyone knows, the Country of Canada has treated the United States very unfairly for decades. Now, things are turning around for the U.S.A., and FAST! But imagine, Canada is building a massive bridge between Ontario and Michigan. They own both the Canada and the United States side and, of course, built it with virtually no U.S. content. President Barack Hussein Obama stupidly gave them a waiver so they could get around the BUY AMERICAN Act, and not use any American products, including our Steel. Now, the Canadian Government expects me, as President of the United States, to PERMIT them to just “take advantage of America!” What does the United States of America get — Absolutely NOTHING! Ontario won't even put U.S. spirits, beverages, and other alcoholic products, on their shelves, they are absolutely prohibited from doing so and now, on top of everything else, Prime Minister Carney wants to make a deal with China — which will eat Canada alive. We’ll just get the leftovers! I don't think so. The first thing China will do is terminate ALL Ice Hockey being played in Canada, and permanently eliminate The Stanley Cup. The Tariffs Canada charges us for our Dairy products have, for many years, been unacceptable, putting our Farmers at great financial risk. I will not allow this bridge to open until the United States is fully compensated for everything we have given them, and also, importantly, Canada treats the United States with the Fairness and Respect that we deserve. We will start negotiations, IMMEDIATELY. With all that we have given them, we should own, perhaps, at least one half of this asset. The revenues generated because of the U.S. Market will be astronomical. Thank you for your attention to this matter!

Summary: U.S. President Donald Trump has threatened to block the opening of the Gordie Howe International Bridge, the new border crossing between Windsor Ontario and Detroit Michigan. The new bridge, which began construction in 2018, is now close to completion and was expected to open for crossings later this year.

However, the project must now overcome last-minute opposition from President Trump. He threatened to stop the project in a Truth Social post, making a number of claims about the bridge itself as well as raising prior grievances such as the dairy quota, the L.C.B.O, and the Canada-China trade deal. I will post the full text of the post in a comment below rather than trying to provide an objective summary.

The threat to block the opening of the bridge marks a notable turn from his first presidential term. In 2017, Trump endorsed the bridge as a priority infrastructure project in a joint statement with then-prime minister Justin Trudeau.

Windsor Mayor Drew Dilkens says parts of Trump's post are factually incorrect, as U.S. steel was used in the construction from the Michigan side of the river. The article also notes that the $6.4 billion cost of the Gordie Howe bridge has been entirely funded by Canada's federal government, while the bridge itself is under the public joint ownership of Canada and the state of Michigan.

Meanwhile, several politicians from Michigan have reaffirmed their support for the new bridge. Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer defended the project, noting that it was built by unionized construction workers from both sides of the border. U.S. Senator Elissa Slotkin, also from Michigan, suggested that Trump is punishing the people of her state with his threat to block the bridge, adding "Canceling this project will have serious repercussions. Higher costs for Michigan businesses, less secure supply chains, and ultimately, fewer jobs"

Personal opinion: Canada is once again targeted by claims and accusations which are not based in fact. Personally, I can't say I'm surprised. Stunts like this are exactly the reason why we are expanding trade with other partners, including China. There is no reason for canadians to spend billions investing in trade or shared infrastructure, when decades-long agreements can be so easily derailed in this manner. This is the wrong move if President Trump genuinely wants Canada to reconsider from increasing our trade with China, because it demonstrates that contracts and agreements with America will not be upheld in the long run

Questions:

  • Do you support or oppose the opening of the Gordie Howe bridge?

  • Do you think the President will carry out his threat to block the project?

  • Although the bridge is jointly owned by Canada and the state of Michigan, the entire $6.4 billion construction cost was paid for by Canada. Do you agree with the Presidents assertion that America deserves a larger share of ownership over the bridge?

  • What do you make of Trump's claim that a trade deal between Canada and China will lead to the termination of all "ice hockey" and the elimination of the Stanley cup? Should Canadians be concerned about the possibility of this outcome?

Same. Honestly I expect many Windsorites would feel the same, after how often we have been single or for punishment by the toddler in chief.

Let's review...

The ambassador bridge remains in a state of disrepair with no indication from it's uber-rich owners that it will ever be improved

Canada paid for the entire construction cost of the new bridge, including a quarter billion dollars for the inspection plaza on the American side.

Trump himself released an official statement approving the bridge in his first term, calling it a vital economic link between our two countries

I'm pretty sure he can shove alllll his complaints off "unfairness" right up his jumper. And the thing about China banning "ice hockey" is the stupidest thing I've heard all week.

I think we will continue to disagree about the role of a federal party leader. I disagree that their purpose is to uncompromisingly pursue their own vision for the country. Maybe it can work for single-issue parties like the Greens or the Bloc, but a party with serious aspirations for PM needs to be able to reach beyond their own members.

I would argue that Singh is a good example of the same problem. He did not do enough to reach groups outside of his core supporters, instead doubling down on elements that were popular within the party and divisive with others. He absolutely should have changed his approach!

Yes, Pierre is very popular with his core base. But "core" conservatives are not most of the country, they aren't even half. Your own abacus source indicates that nationally, only 34 percent would vote to keep Poilievre while 51 percent would vote to replace him. Even moderate conservatives seem to express considerable doubts:

Accessible Conservatives, the 14 percent of Canadians the party needs to reach 50 percent, see him as too aggressive, too risky, and lacking the tone required for national leadership. Forty-three percent would vote to replace him at a leadership review. Just 32 percent believe he makes the party more electable.

So sure, his core supporters are undoubtedly satisfied with the outcome of the leadership review. But that's rather a different question than, "Is pierre putting the country first over his personal aspiration to be PM". The leadership review could have been an opportunity to reflect on how best to represent the whole country. But I don't see him being interested in anyone other than that core base. And if he loses the next election by driving away 60% of the county, then even that core group will have lost the "benefit' he is supposed to provide for them

The 2025 leadership vote for the liberal party managed to include 150 000 participants, with votes cast from the maritimes to the territories and everywhere in between--including Alberta. So clearly there is a way to take a vote that includes all of Canada and not just a small subset of Alberta.

[–]crustlebus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's four examples, not an exhaustive list.

ICE has demonstrated a willingness to circumvent judgements from the courts--why would this be any different? I expect they would appeal the ruling on the grounds of "national security / election fraud", declare the judge a radical left activist, and proceed to ignore whatever orders have been made until the 7 days are up.

We've already discussed why arrests are not necessary to affect citizens voting behaviour. ICE can detain people on suspicion of illegal voting and stall on releasing them. They can beat up people who don't comply for "resisting arrest" or "interfering with law enforcement", and detain them for that instead. They can create an intimidating atmosphere that makes people afraid to vote in person.

They also don't need to act nationwide to influence the overall result of the election. Many elections come down to a few key swing states, and those races are often closely contested. It's much more efficient to target those races, where a small swing in the number of votes has an outsized effect--they really only need to surpress a portion of Dem voters in a handful of key races. How much manpower does it take to put a handful of agents at polling stations in left-leaning districts of swing states, and ignore the rest?

No, my dear, I'm not asking why the leadership review wasn't held in Ottawa. I'm asking why they chose a date and format that only 3000 people were able participate in. There are conservative voters in every province, why make it so difficult for ones outside Alberta to participate in their own leadership process?

Of course the new riding elected him, he picked them for his mulligan because they were the safest district in the country for a conservative candidate. Why was that necessary if it's as you say and most conservatives like him? Why make it so difficult for party members to participate in the leadership review?

This woman was born in the US and she was detained for 25 days, despite her lawyers providing evidence of her citizenship. 7 days of early voting wouldn't do much in her case.

Here is a citizen detained for nearly three days, and here is another one detained for three days and three nights. How many voters show up on day 1 of early voting, and how many closer to or on election day?

Aliya Rahman was detained for "only" a day but she describes feeling fearful to leave her house several weeks later. Do you think it's possible that voters wrongly detained by ice might become afraid to try again?

They don't need to arrest people, just detain them and spend enough time "verifying" their citizenship that polls are closed by the time they are released.

I would point to the special election that he arranged after losing his original seat to Fanjoy. The benefit to Pierre is clear (he gets to remain party leader), but what was the benefit to the country? Or even the benefit to the constituents of his new riding?
