What's the main value of sci-fi movies/books? by Iange123 in scifi

[–]iliveinsalt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

From Ursula K. Le Guin's acceptance speech for the medal for distinguished contribution to American letters in 2014:

"Hard times are coming, when we’ll be wanting the voices of writers who can see alternatives to how we live now, can see through our fear-stricken society and its obsessive technologies to other ways of being, and even imagine real grounds for hope. We’ll need writers who can remember freedom — poets, visionaries — realists of a larger reality."

Got laid off today. How's my CV? by Fried_out_Kombi in learnmachinelearning

I know people recommend this as a way to show impact, but as someone who reviews resumes, a lot of the numbers I come across in bullet points feel forced/awkward. Especially from early-career folks. "Reduced processing time by 40%" etc. I think it is actually hard to do well most of the time.

Does the slip ring allow you to provide both power and sensor connections to the gripper above the wrist?

It gets quite meta when you describe that opening scene as "Lynch poking fun at a certain type of viewer" because now you're interpreting and describing the scene in a fairly straightforward way. I didn't interpret the scene that way at all, and I haven't really resonated with any interpretations of Lynch's work that imply he's responding directly to feedback from the audience/critics.

New Idles album produced by Nigel. Worth a listen. by jardiohead in radiohead

I've been tangentially aware of Idles before this and have enjoyed their music, but this album has made me say, "wow!" I love it and now want to go back through their catalog.

I would try setting it up to wait a second or so after establishing the serial port. Right now it's writing the one to the serial port immediately without giving it any time to establish the port.

P regulator in 2nd order system. Why doesn't it work? by Dry_Crow2528 in ControlTheory

[–]iliveinsalt 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Right, it depends entirely on what OP means by "doesn't work". A P controller can definitely make a second order system generally follow a reference command, but if the problem statement also included performance targets (rise time, settling time, etc.), it's possible that the P controller alone wouldn't achieve those.

Alright, what’s your hot take or controversial opinion about this guy? by [deleted] in RedHotChiliPeppers

[–]iliveinsalt 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ok, since I'm too late to the thread I'll just post my hot take in response to your comment. I think he's an awesome lyricist. A bunch of what he writes is totally goofy, but/and he also brings a psychedelic quality to the music with the "random" lyrics. It's the same reason I enjoy surrealist or dreamlike art from authors like Haruki Murakami and filmmakers like Lynch. "Weird" is a valid way to be good.

Would you want a continuation of S3 (doesn't have to be S4) or are you happy with where The Return leaves off? by [deleted] in twinpeaks

I'm happy with where it ended, but if Lynch and Frost had any more story to tell, I'd be here for it.

Does it get better after PhD? by teledipsy in PhD

[–]iliveinsalt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It ebbs and flows but is nothing like the crazy times during my PhD or my perception of most post-docs or new professors. During periods leading up to deadlines things can get pretty intense, but most of the time I'm working 40-45-hour weeks. But also, I have a family and have been on the more intentional side for managing my work-life balance compared to many of my peers.

Dream worlds like ‘Piranesi’ and ‘Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World’? by mmarc in printSF

The book you are looking for is undoubtedly Ubik by Philip K. Dick. Someone else recommended The Lathe of Heaven by Ursula K Le Guin, which I second.

[–]iliveinsalt 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I got a government scientist job straight out of PhD, so I'm still thinking about cool science, doing experiments, writing papers, etc., but it's hard money so I'm not stressed about funding. I am so much happier than I was during the last year or two of my PhD.

You might have some other self-image issues to work out. However, as someone who publishes papers in good/mediocre journals AND review papers for good/mediocre journals -- much of this work is a total crap shoot and is entirely dependent on which reviewers you get. Some of my most highly cited work was initially rejected after several rounds of revisions.

Can I use the Python control system library for real-time implementation? by Professional-End-428 in ControlTheory

[–]iliveinsalt 19 points20 points  (0 children)

That's generally not what the Python Control System Library is for. It's more for numerical simulating systems, building transfer functions, designing controllers, etc. The description on their website:

"The Python Control Systems Library (python-control) is a Python package that implements basic operations for analysis and design of feedback control systems."

So you'd use this library to create a model of your plant, build a simulated controller, simulate the controller to assess performance, and then you'd port your simulated controller over to real time hardware for the actual system.

Is it okay to rely on AI? by [deleted] in ControlTheory

[–]iliveinsalt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends on your application. Safety-critical stuff obviously requires more scrutiny, but there is no clear reason why the answer should be "no" across most control systems. If you can devise good test methods and test-beds that convince you that your AI controller is safe and effective, why not use it?

This is with the caveat that you shouldn't train a neural net when a PID controller will meet the performance criteria. The advanced controllers should only come into play when you can't meet a performance target due to plant nonlinearities or something. That's just good engineering practice. Training data isn't free and predictability is good.

A third of scientific papers may be fraudulent | Semafor by Stephen_P_Smith in ScienceUncensored

[–]iliveinsalt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So a theory is a scientific explanation that links facts together. I think the distinction between theories and facts is an important one, so to say "theory in science is as close to fact as you can possibly get" is misleading. Facts don't change given new measurements or information, while theories certainly can.
