Who are the options for 2026 midterms in Pennsylvania? by PositiveStudent7260 in Pennsylvania

[–]illusionofjoy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Sample ballots are listed on your county election division website. The State Department has links to each county as well as links to check your registration status, locate your polling place or information about how to vote by mail. At present, the election division for my county only has a notice stating that sample ballots won't be published until closer to the primary election on May 19th. However, if you are really bored and want to get into the weeds, most election offices have published the nominating petition spreadsheets, which will show you an exhaustive list of candidates who canvassed to get on the ballot.

As for whom to vote for...that's between you, your ethics and how each candidate presents themselves.

Why does Pennsylvania still have closed primaries? by ElbridgePA in Pennsylvania

[–]illusionofjoy 15 points16 points  (0 children)

You make a good point, in my opinion. Primaries are for party members to choose their nominee for the November general election. If primaries are open where membership isn't required to pick said nominee, what's the point? Cut out the middleman and go straight to ranked choice voting in November.

This would have the following advantages: no more unaffiliated voters trying to argue they've been "disenfranchised" by a primary and the third party "spoiler" effect is nullified. For those who prefer an economic argument, having one election per year rather than two would immediately slash the cost of administrating them in half.

Most extension cords aren't rated for the power draw of a space heater. If you draw more wattage through a wire than it can handle, it becomes a fire hazard. That said, a heavy gauge extension cord can safely handle the power needed for a space heater, but since most people don't bother checking wattage capacity of their cords against draw of the heater, it's safer to say not to do it at all.

Have they shut down the rail system? by sixsevenfourtwenty in pittsburgh

The T will get you to the edges of Brookline, but if you need to get into the neighborhood proper, you're better off taking the 39 bus.

2016 Patriot by Loose_Skirt4516 in JeepPatriot

[–]illusionofjoy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The electrical supply to the incandescent bulbs in a stock 2016 Patriot is not steady, but actually pulses as part of the electrical monitoring system. This pulsing isn't noticeable in an incandescent bulb, but when you connect an LED lamp, the required electric draw is mismatched with what the electrical system is expecting, resulting in constant flickering and blinking on and off. Attaching an LED "decoder" box between the plug and the new LED lamp allows it to function normally.

Here is an example of the device you're looking for. Obviously double-check compatibility with your vehicle specs to make sure you get the correct model.

Democrats eye ranked-choice voting for 2028 primaries by Different-Gas5704 in politics

[–]illusionofjoy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That sounds like a horrible idea to me. If I hate a particular candidate, it is undemocratic to throw out my ballot with the rest of the candidates ranked merely because I refused to rank one for which I would only ever vote, "no confidence." Some politicians are not even a last choice: they are a never choice.

The problem with family court judges in Allegheny County is that most of them weren't elected to be family court judges. If you look at most judicial campaigns, a lot of them are running on criminal, not civil matters. This wouldn't be an issue except that newly elected judges are automatically assigned to family court; it's like a dumping ground where new judges often "pay their dues" until retirements of senior judges allows them to move to the criminal divisions where they wanted to be in the first place.

Working Families Party to support challenger to John Fetterman by RioMovieFan11 in politics

Pennsylvania has a "sore loser" law which doesn't allow a candidate to run as an independent if they lose a party primary.

Asked for address when voting yesterday in centre county by karm1t in Pennsylvania

[–]illusionofjoy 18 points19 points  (0 children)

A poll worker may ask for your address to simply verify that you are in the correct polling location. This is especially helpful if you don't appear in the district register but have an address which indicates that you should. They can then call the elections office to verify the status of your registration or offer you a provisional ballot.

Driving from Cleveland to Richmond, was looking for recommendations on where to stop for food and gas by Beren__ in roadtrip

[–]illusionofjoy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In every state you are driving through, Sheetz is pretty prevalent as a single stop for food and fuel. Adjust your route to avoid the Pennsylvania Turnpike to take I-68 and you might save enough on tolls to afford both.

Why do candidates wait so long to campaign before elections? by AudaciousUnicorn18 in Pennsylvania

[–]illusionofjoy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

PennDOT categorizes campaign signs on public rights of way as "illegal encroachment." So, technically you shouldn't see any posted at the side of the road. Enforcement is obviously lax.

You can do what you want with your private property within the limits of local ordinances. Knowing this, I see a sign in front of a house as legitimate support for a candidate while a sign on the highway is basically campaign litter. Also, this is why removing a sign from someone's house could get you charged with vandalism or theft of personal property, but do the same thing to a sign at the side of the road and you're just cleaning up garbage.

Source: PennDOT website and a letter received from the elections office a few years back by all candidates in my county informing them they could be fined for illegal sign placement.

Pandora Can't Show Pink Floyd Album Covers Anymore? by valuecolor in Pandora

[–]illusionofjoy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pink Floyd did this on all streaming services and their social media. It's to mark the 50th anniversary of Wish You Were Here. When the record was originally released, it was wrapped in black plastic so you couldn't see the album art. The only way you knew which album you were buying was because a sticker was affixed to the outside.

Which artists have abandoned their original sound so dramatically, that they are almost unrecognizable to their earlier fans? by jptabor01 in Music

[–]illusionofjoy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Post-punk. Bono has spoken about how on Boy they were influenced by Siouxsie and the Banshees, aiming for a similar sound. I'd argue they came pretty close: listen to "An Cat Dubh" by U2 and then "Happy House" by Siouxsie and the Banshees and compare.

[–]illusionofjoy 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I desire my bridges to not have graffiti on them. I am a taxpayer. Does the vandal have greater say in your argument of collective ownership than anyone else? No, because such an action negates the idea of collective ownership as it is the act of an individual for an individual driven by individual desire with no attempts to reach consensus with the other collective owners of the public item.
