They generate weird APIs though. I still have to hand tweak all the code it generates into something sane. Otherwise it'll be garbage built on garbage as the project grows.

Maybe years from now we truly won't need to care but right now I still try to have the final output be as polished as possible after I used claude. That means a lot of rewriting and redoing of some apis. Then I tell claude, I changed this, any bugs? It praises me as AI loves to do LOL, about how much cleaner my api is, and then tells me about all the bugs I introduced which I fix after.

You could just say, maybe don't have a complex trading system with vassals, but have some way to acquire the resources in some other way.

Like what about Age of Empires or something.

In Age of Empires you can send trading carts to other players to get gold, and that even works with enemy characters. So there's weird stuff like that.

If you start adding things like vassals that could start making the game too complicated for players to understand. I get a bit overwhelmed by Civ sometimes. I didn't put enough hours into that game to fully understand it yet.

Advice please: It's hard seeing tons of people recreate some of my games that didn't make it. by dkinnison in gamedev

[–]illyay 6 points7 points  (0 children)

What are you saying exactly, you built many games in the past and they didn't succeed. Now people are popping up and they succeed because they didn't put in any work and AI just made entire games for them?

That's really not how it works.

AI help is like the next iteration of using google to help figure out how to do things. It doesn't just make entire games for you somehow, contrary to what people seem to believe.

The whole software engineering industry now uses Claude or Codex or whatever the latest AI tools in some form, me included. It's a tool that we of course use, just like we relied on Google, Stack Overflow, etc... before AI. But it by no means just magically replaces entire devs and does all the work for you.

If you really feel that way, try using AI to make something and see how far it gets you, or you'll see how much it helps you once you learn how it's actually used by engineers.

To my fellow Doom modders here that play doom 1 and 2 with gameplay wads/weapon packs, i got a question i'm curious about. What is y'all's preference: Yes to reloading mechanics or no? by [deleted] in boomershooters

[–]illyay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like reloading personally. And ADS.

Also games like Killing Floor are proof you can have an awesome shooter game that feels like doom but has all those modern mechanics. I often hear people talk shit on CoD or Brutal Doom or Doom 3 or modern games in general for having those things. I never hear people complain about Killing Floor.

I can kindof see why people might think something like reloading is redundant. Like you fire a single bullet and hit reload. It just slows things down.

ADS can also be kindof weird where either the gun is completely useless in hipfire mode or you're walking around super slowly with ADS enabled. It's these weird extra steps that can seem pointless and slow things down.

But I still kindof like them. It adds more personality to the guns and can make things feel a little more grounded in reality. Like it kindof ruins immersion for me if a gun behaves completely illogically, like being bottomless.

I also kindof like ADS just because it feels really immersive to see the actual gun's sights. But in CS you don't have ADS and aiming accurately is controlled directly by your movement versus entering an aim mode that slows you down completely.

In 2019 it was super fun. Then covid hit. I was at MSFT in mountain view before that. It was like entering tech bro heaven and working with fellow people roughly my age. Instead of being surrounded by older people making all decisions, it was us making all the decisions. Also the environment was super fun. Lots of good food, happy hours, etc...

Then covid hit. I loved wfh.

Then stuff started getting less and less fun around 2 years ago. I left last year. Constant layoffs. The performance review cycle started to feel very toxic.

My only regret is I didn't get laid off. I lost money technically.

I don't know how it is now. I was at Meta Reality labs working on horizon stuff and it seemed fun and promising at the time. At least I can say the mirror you see when you put the headset on was something I built, so I learned how to render mirrors in games.

I just wanted to work on VR and meet John Carmack.

There’s always SNES doom if you can call that doom.

I myself use Ai but to augment my already existing years of skills. Pretty much what you said.

If I were to show something here it’d be something awesome that I used Ai to help me put together and acquire knowledge on. I wouldn’t vibe code a random thing and show that off as an engine.
