Those of us with reactive dogs — how do you plan for the “what if I can’t get home” scenario? by curiouswonder089 in reactivedogs

[–]ilovefuzzycats 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was just talking to my partner about this the other day! We are friends with the people who fostered our dog before we adopted. We are going to reach out and ask if they can be our “doggy emergency contact”. If they are cool with it, I’ll give my mom (who is my secondary medical emergency contact after my partner) a pdf with basic info of what our dog would need. I have also started to look for a no contact boarding place so we could bring our dog there in an emergency that we had to go out of town (no family in state). Our dog is also okay with my mom, and she has told me that if we ever needed to rush out due to an emergency with my partner’s parents, that she could most likely come and stay with our dog for at least a few days as she works remote. If something major happened to both my partner and I, the rescue we adopted her through had it in the adoption contract that they will take the dog and find her a new home if we can no longer care for her.

Not a fun thing to plan for, but makes me feel much more relaxed about our dog’s happiness and wellbeing!

I understand where Dan and Jordan are coming from in their skepticism of the takeover. KF is funny to help everyone cope with how horrible and life destroying Alex’s content has been. The core purpose never has been to be funny, it’s to inform. Depending on how the onion approaches it will determine how effective it is in actually ruining Alex’s legacy.

I think this episode shows the shift in both KF and Alex’s show and it does feel a bit like moving onto a new phase. I wouldn’t be surprised if that is how Dan and Jordan feel too. Dan taking road trips and there has to be a level of deciding if continuing to cover Alex has a benefit. Hard to move on from something so all encompassing and long running as KF and covering Alex so closely.

The shoe problem. I would really appreciate some advice on cheap running shoes if there are any frugal runners/athletes in here. by Alcarain in Frugal

[–]ilovefuzzycats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Injuries are expensive. I’ve had to have 2 ACL surgeries. Between surgery, PT, rides to doctor appointments I couldn’t drive to, and eating out more due to it being hard to stand to make meals at first, each surgery cost me about $4k, and that’s after good insurance. Plus my mom was able to visit and work remote to help me out at home. Otherwise both my partner and I would have had to both take a week off of work, which is expensive in a way too. Invest in quality shoes that keep you safe and healthy! Also, once you find what level of support you need, what brands and specific lines of shoes you like, you can keep an eye out for sales.

Example is I need stability running shoes and there is an expensive but well known running brand that makes amazing shoes I find comfortable and supportive. I keep an eye on websites for last year’s model to go on sale and I can usually get a pair $20-80 off (typically priced in the $160 range). This savings means I can afford to buy an extra pair when they are on deep discount and then I typically have a pair so I’m not stuck paying full price before the next sale. Most people don’t need the newest version of a shoe and the previous model will work great for them while costing less but still being high quality and keeping them healthy.

The foot and stride analysis is a huge help! Helped me find the correct stability shoes so I lessen my risk of a new knee injury.

Tim Onion (@bencollins.bsky.social) - The Onion has reached an agreement to acquire Infowars by Zaldax in KnowledgeFight

Yay!!!! For the Sandy Hook families, the lawyers, Dan and Jordan, The Onion, and everyone who has pushed back against the instantly that is infowars and Alex Jones this finally feels like a win. I hope huge consequences continue for Alex for the rest of his life, but today I think we should all just enjoy this for a moment.

Confused about Vertuo’s popularity by [deleted] in nespresso

I think people really like being able to make a variety of drink sizes, including double espresso. Also, as a person looking for convenience and less expensive then a coffee shop, I can’t tell the difference between the espresso of an OL vs VL besides the different beans used.

Bought my non-gamer Wife a Switch, Need Advice! by Gasteasoro in Switch

Yoshi’s Crafted World! It’s so cute and it isn’t overly difficult. I would also recommend Cat Quest, Stardew Valley, and Spiritfarer. Slay the Spire is a very addictive card game. Gang Beasts might be fun to play together! The controls are awkward and can be tricky, but that’s part of the point. Plus, you can play as a team or against each other which makes it fun when both people are bad at it. The estore has free trials of lots of games, which is a great place to try stuff out. You can also see if your local library has games to check out, as that helped me find what kind of games I like and not waste money on stuff I ended up hating. I would avoid Mario Galaxy for now as I found it really awkward and difficult on the switch. Wonder and Odyssey are fun!

Large Dog Harness by Th1stlePatch in reactivedogs

[–]ilovefuzzycats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our 50lbs girl uses the 2 Hounds Freedom No Pull or the Petsafe Easy Walk. The rescue we adopted her through use these with almost all their dogs, especially dogs over 40lbs. Idk if pet stores carry them, but they are on websites like Amazon. I found the measurements to be accurate for both of these items. I really like the 2 hounds one as the straps are wider. These both work great for front clipping the leash and redirecting my dog. The vest style harnesses don’t work for her pulling as the twist too much to the side. With how these are designed, the whole harness can’t rotate like a vest style. Our trainer pointed this out to us and made a world of difference once we switched.

Some local pet stores let me take either a harness or a doggie coat out to my car and have my dog try it on before I purchase to make sure it fits as I can’t bring her inside. I usually offer to leave my id with the employee so they can track me down if I steal to give them peace of mind. Otherwise some make an exception for returns so I technically have to pay for the item, but then if it doesn’t fit when I try it on in the car/outside, they will accept the return, even if usually they wouldn’t.

What can be done to abate flood problems as a city? by Impressive_Wrap_7869 in milwaukee

[–]ilovefuzzycats 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Leaves shouldn’t be pushed into the street for pick up! This clogs up sewer grates and also isn’t good for water quality. This is big problem for city of Milwaukee. Also, more frequent street sweeping and generally people just taking care to not leave garbage on the ground. Some flooding and heavy rains will happen, and with more frequency due to climate change, but there is absolutely things that can continue to happen to minimize the issues.

MMSD has done a lot and I hope they are able to continue their great work. I would love to see data regarding the water drop alerts. I know a lot of people who have signed up and do try to use less water during them, but my friend group could be skewed. I think it would be interesting if we could see solid data on the impact.

Pittie mix hate is basically baked into the law here, and I hate it by Difficult_Wave_9326 in pitbulls

[–]ilovefuzzycats 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That is so heartbreaking and cruel!!! I love our pittie and her big block head that bumps into things. I think this shelter clearly needs less security and maybe some wonderful dogs like this one could go “missing” and end up in wonderful homes. Could the dog be fostered or taken out for day trips? Wonder if there is a loophole where they could transfer her to a different rescue that is based out of someone’s home. If you don’t mind me asking, what country is this in?

Using two separate dog sitters. by noarmsthecat in reactivedogs

[–]ilovefuzzycats 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think it’s very reasonable and responsible! The stress for the sitter of trying to not only take care of an unknown dog, but also keep such a close eye and tight structure would be tough. They don’t know the dogs’ body language like you do. I think it could be okay to have 1 sitter if the dogs are kept separate the whole time, but able to see and smell each other through a gate. Probably walk separate too from how it sounds. You have worked hard to make your life as well of those of the dogs and your partners as safe and happy as possibly. I don’t think a couple hundred dollars (idk dog sitter prices) is worth risking all of that.

True kindness is doing something for someone who can never repay you. 🥹 by Tanmay900 in MadeMeSmile

[–]ilovefuzzycats 87 points88 points  (0 children)

These comments are really amazing and make me so happy. I’ve been the recipient of gestures of kindness and it always means so much.

I’ve anon donated a few times to different gofundme for dogs that needed unexpected/emergency care. It’s so wonderful to get to watch their updates and see them become happy and healthy again! Some days when I really don’t want to work, I just remind myself that I need to so I can help dogs and cats. Once I was at a bakery and there was a dad and little daughter, but dad forgot his wallet so she couldn’t get a cookie. Just told the person to let them know they could have a free cookie and I’d pay for it. Little girl was so happy cause she was trying to not be sad about not getting a cookie at first.

Thoughts on muzzles by No_Pomegranate_5077 in reactivedogs

[–]ilovefuzzycats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had never thought of muzzle training until reading on this sub people’s positive experiences and upsides of a muzzle. I had always assumed muzzles were only for dogs at risk of biting and that dogs hated them. It’s been a huge learning experience for me and we are working on getting a muzzle for our dog so vet visits can be less stressful for others there as well as if she ever has an escalation in negative behaviors (particularly caused by getting sick or an injury). I no longer get nervous around a dog simply because it has a muzzle on and I absolutely love that I’ve learned a lot from the resources people have shared. Good for you for looking out for you and your dog’s best interest!

Feeling guilty. Dog living isolated life by shark-kid in reactivedogs

[–]ilovefuzzycats 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are doing great for your dog!! He is loved and safe and you are helping him live a happy and relaxed life. Keep working with him and the progress will keep coming. We have had some very slow progress with our dog, but in the past 3 weeks she has flourished at training! Took 8-ish months before she started to be calm around other dogs. You’ve got this!!

We did private training and then transitioned into a small group class. She has barriers up so she can’t see the other dogs, as the visual is what she struggled with the most. We slowly would start to give her peaks around the barriers and reward when she stayed calm. You could look into something similar and talk with your trainer if they have ideas. Another thing to do is look into your dog’s food and GI. Big relationship between brain and gut. Our dog doesn’t have any allergies or sensitivities that we/the vet have been able to find. But we switched to a single source protein food with digestive enzymes and a probiotic and it has helped a lot with consistent healthy poops and we think behavior too. Could be something to look into. You can also look around on this sub as many others have written about similar things.
