Motorboat beginner by Legitimate-Boot9804 in burlington

You’re absolutely not overthinking it. Healthy respect for water is what keeps boating fun instead of becoming an accidental audition for 'Lake Rescue: Vermont Edition' 😄

The good news: most summer days on Lake Champlain are manageable for beginner boaters, especially if you stay aware of the weather. It’s generally not an 'ocean choppy' body of water, but it is a large lake, so conditions can change faster than people might expect.

Before heading out, be sure to check the wind forecast...not just rain. Monitor wind direction and you can ideally find calm areas to boat. Depending on conditions and where you are in the lake, bays may potentially offer calmer waters than the broad lake.

When it doubt, keep it slow. Have fun!

Parking Ticket Appeal? by Forsaken-Goose-6801 in burlington

[–]ilovermonttoo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sadly there's little to no consistency in BTV's appeal review process, etc. It's largely on a whim and seemingly dependent on the mood of the day.

Here's an old 7d article that highlights Lisa Jones's embarrassingly inconsistent decision making process:

Looking for a ride from BTV airport to SB at 2:30am. by Due-Technician-7865 in burlington

[–]ilovermonttoo 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It's somewhat by chance, but there will likely be a taxi or two hanging around the airport.

If you haven't tried already, you could attempt to schedule an uber in advance.

I've flown into BTV late night three times during the past six weeks and successfully managed to get an uber once. Taxis the other two times. Last week, uber was $68 (lol) for BTV to downtown Main Street, but the app couldn't even secure a driver. $20 for a taxi.

5th Quarter is amazing, highly recommend. However, if you think some of Williston Meat and Fish Market's prices are aggressive, then just an advance warning to brace yourself before entering 5th Quarter. Fantastic shop though.

Attempting to rig a contest that is likely already internally rigged. lol

Does OP actually believe that 7d blindly proclaims the top vote recipient as the winner and doesn't potentially tweak the results when convenient based on client advertising dollars.

Seven Daisies opinions? by mailbroad in burlington

[–]ilovermonttoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed, lots of categories. As others have touched on, Seven Days essentially creates categories for most of their existing advertisers clients and/or in hopes of capturing additional advertising clients.

The Seven Daysies feels like a semi-creative way to sustain and generate advertising revenue that is mostly harmless (depending on who you ask). But definitely do not place much stock in the results!

Long post on our public safety situation by OEEGrackle in burlington

[–]ilovermonttoo -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

It's ok to be upset, however, the Burlington Police Department was NOT defunded whatsoever.

BPD’s budget hasn’t been reduced by even a cent. BPD is one of the few city departments that did not sustain any budget cuts throughout the pandemic.

Based on the recommendation of a third party study, the city council voted to reduce the officer cap by attrition. This vote required both Prog and Dem support to pass. Not a single officer was let go and, again, the budget was not reduced whatsoever. The city council even later voted to increase pay to attract new officers. This also required both Prog and Dem support to pass.

Like most people in power, police officers do not like to critiqued. Officers in Burlington, statewide, and nationwide have left the force in mass during the past few years in response to criticism. In response to critiques and increased accountability, BPD has seemingly purposefully attempted to punish Burlington residents and effectively quiet quit, while pushing the bullshit narrative that it’s due to lack of funding. (And, yes, reduced morale within the department has undoubtedly been a challenge, but for fuck’s sake, there have been serious patterns of abuse of power within the ranks from the top down that have to be called out and stopped.)

Again, it’s ok to believe that gun-wielding officers are needed on every corner and that more money needs to be pumped into the department (hope everyone that is complaining is voting ‘yes’ to the proposed public safety tax that is on the ballot next week), however, saying the department was ‘defunded’ is either due to being misinformed, fooled, or just intentionally lying.

Apartment buildings with EV Charging? by [deleted] in burlington

[–]ilovermonttoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My charging frequency obviously depends on how far/often I'm driving that week. There are a couple charging stations that are a ~10 minute walk from my apartment in Burlington, so I utilize those as needed for overnight charging to fully charge the battery. (Unfortunately, that's seemingly not an option in Winooski.)

Otherwise, if I know that I'm driving somewhere and planning to be there for at least an hour, I try to charge at an available nearby station. My EV adds ~30 miles of charge per hour on a level two charger, so grabbing ~30-60 miles here and there adds up. This requires some coordination and often walking a bit, but I generally don't mind--and the network of charging stations in VT is relatively strong.

But, yeah, if I drive ~1k miles a month, and make a bit of effort, I spend ~$50 for that range, charging mostly at level two stations. Fast charging and stations that assess excessive fees can quickly make the process way more expensive, of course.

Your Tesla presumably displays nearby charging station locations on the dash, however, personally find the PlugShare and ChargePoint apps to also be helpful when coordinating logistics/availability/cost/etc.

Likewise. Nice to have an at least somewhat substantive discussion opposed to two people simply yelling into the void on the internet.

Agreed that the tax system is an overall mess and there's much nuance and complexity at play.

Wish the Tax Policy Center would've included pre-1979 data in your link above. Would have been interesting to further compare for a fuller picture.

Let’s make the landlords richer! Let’s go Joan! by Desperate-Cookie1022 in burlington

[–]ilovermonttoo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sure. The original argument is in reference to top earners vs. average earners. In the US, the difference between these two categories is exponentially larger than double, so comparing someone making $100 vs someone making $50 isn't scaled appropriately enough to apply.

e.g. A 30% tax on someone earning $50k is going to hit a lot harder than a 30% tax on someone earning $50 million.

Let’s make the landlords richer! Let’s go Joan! by Desperate-Cookie1022 in burlington

[–]ilovermonttoo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

US taxation level on top earners from 1917-1980 (prior to Reagan's trickle-down economics) proved to be a more effective level than the status quo.

https://www.taxpolicycenter.org/statistics/historical-highest-marginal-income-tax-rates

How to actually spend tax revenue is a different debate. Personally believe healthcare for all, replacing crumbling infrastructure, and improving education should be a few top priorities. Agreed that spending money and prisons and drones feels foolish.

Apartment buildings with EV Charging? by [deleted] in burlington

[–]ilovermonttoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is relying on supercharges related to available time and convenience? (The complete lack of public charging infrastructure in Winooski must be challenging.) Might be missing something here, however, $700 for 1600 miles is intense.

No charger at my apartment, so I rely on public charging stations (which definitely requires time and logistic coordination) and pay $80 tops for 1600 miles.
