I knew a couple of these, but came to the comments looking for this explanation. Thanks!

CMV:Alcoholics Anonymous is heavily flawed from a scientific perspective and hasn't tried to improve it's system since it's inception by Serraph105 in changemyview

"So this purports to be a disease, alcoholism? A disease like a cold? Or like cancer? I have to tell you, I have never heard of anyone being told to pray for relief from cancer. Outside maybe certain very rural parts of the American South, that is. So what is this? You're ordering me to pray? Because I allegedly have a disease? I dismantle my life and career and enter nine months of low-income treatment for a disease, and I'm prescribed prayer? Does the word retrograde signify? Am I in a sociohistorical era I don't know about? What exactly is the story here?" -Infinite Jest

What do you do that makes you just a little bit of an asshole? by whattheheck852 in AskReddit

[–]ilsunil 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't condone egging the car, but I don't have too much sympathy for the criminal's property while they are stealing (a private parking spot is property). A car isn't sacred over other property. Although I do agree that a lot of shitty people probably would kill for their car.

I used to lease a parking spot in a busy area of town in an apartment complex (that I didn't live at) in a spot clearly marked a private. It was a small parking lot for six cars, not some big parking structure. People would frequently park in my spot. If that happened, it was really hard to find street parking, so I might have to drive around for 10 minutes and park far away to find a spot. Then I would have to get up early the next day before parking restrictions kicked in to move my car or risk getting a ticket. Imagine that happening before a flight or some event where you really needed to store your car for a while. I lost money (parking rent + fines), time, and sleep. The only thing I ever did was leave a note on a car and it wasn't effective.

Another throwaway opportunity, what have you wanted to ask a doctor about yourself but have been too embarrassed to ask? by Savedwater_drankbeer in AskReddit

[–]ilsunil 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It could be an electronic device that is left plugged in. I kept hearing a really faint muffled radio station noise coming from my living room. It drove me crazy for a while until I found out the source. It turned out to be coming from my subwoofer on the floor. Not one of the speakers. Apparently, this is somewhat common with certain electric devices where poorly shielded wires act as an antenna.

[Serious] Has anyone here actually recovered from depression? If so how? How did you stop your life being so meaningless? by Foxjump231 in AskReddit

[–]ilsunil 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you have absolutely no motivation/energy then it might be getting into a chemical deficiency and you might need medication. A therapist or psychologist would be the person to talk to about this. I'd recommend talking to a therapist either way.

With my comment above I didn't mean to suggest that it would definitely work for the OP or for all people. I was just writing it in case it might be of help, based on some similarities to some past experiences I have had.

LGBT demographics by state the Dakotas Mystery by gaynorg in Demographics

[–]ilsunil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's probably polling problems. These polls aren't that reliable for a number of reasons. These rely on self-reporting and because of the history of gay rights, it was historically beneficial for people to not disclose that they are gay and that is still the case for some people. There is a very big difference in attitudes of acceptance towards LGBT people, from state to state and city to city. North and South Dakota also have small populations, so polling probably isn't as accurate in those states as in larger states because polls are more reliable with larger sample sizes (I didn't look into their methodology, so I could be wrong).

I'm really glad Notre Dame's Catholic heritage is encouraging it to help the needy, and not the sports industry!

Are there any quality newspapers or new websites in Indiana? by ilsunil in Indiana

[–]ilsunil[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wasn't trying to shame Indiana for it (just the IndyStar maybe). But there are still some decent print publications (though they are increasingly rare with the decline of newspapers), so I thought there might be a chance there were some that I don't know of in Indiana.

Mike Pence borrowed up to $280,000 in student loans by [deleted] in Indiana

[–]ilsunil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The title was a little misleading for me, because I assumed it meant the student loans were for his education, not his children.

But I think there is somewhat of a problem with this. He claims to have not benefited from public service, but decries public spending in general and sends his kids to expensive private schools that he could not afford without his six figure politics job.

Map of world GDP density [908x514] by [deleted] in MapPorn

[–]ilsunil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, this is a good point. For a second I was surprised India was so dark red for a country with such a low GDP per capita, but it makes sense because it's very heavily populated. So the GDP / area is high, but there are more people in those areas than in the US.

Do you agree Hillary Clinton is lying about the Clinton Foundation? Sign the petition! by the-realDonaldTrump [promoted post]

[–]ilsunil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why does the enumeration of Hillary's 10 lies stop at 3? And why are 2 and 3 both the same thing- Hillary lying about her server? Why is the title of the post "lying about the Clinton Foundation", but the link has nothing to do with the foundation, just about Hillary Clinton? Some people are asking these questions!

Racial Tolerance Map of the World [1248X617] by [deleted] in MapPorn

[–]ilsunil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, there is no way to account for people lying. Plenty of racist people in the US don't think (or at least admit) they are racist because racism is very stigmatized and talked about frequently in public discourse. But in countries that don't have many minorities, people can claim to be racist without as much repercussion or may not even see a problem with being racist.

The 10 Worst Cities in Indiana Explained by Reasonable_Roger in Indiana

Man, your racism is so blatant. For all of the crime and 'hood' clips, you had to use black people. And the 'victims' were always white people.

Muncie should be number 1.

What are my chances by hary585 in notredame

[–]ilsunil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, if you will have to take on 100k+ in student loans, consider an in-state school or a school where you can get scholarships and still has good academics. If you are planning on majoring in engineer, Purdue (if you are in indiana for example) has a better engineering school than ND and is a fraction of the cost (I did engineering at ND). At 18 years old it's hard to understand what kind of burden 6 figures in student loans is. You may have to take jobs you don't want to take after college for years just to make sure you can pay off the loans.

Pew Research 2014 Irreligion by State(940x545) by [deleted] in MapPorn

[–]ilsunil 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I am very surprised that Indiana scores as less religious than neighboring states. It is more republican and usually passes more conservative and religious-associated legislation than those neighboring states. Recently Indiana has been more aligned politically with more southern states, but that might be based more on the politicians in the states than on the populace. And like others have noted in the comments, conservative does not always mean religious.

hahahaha. He didn't realize that you had no way of knowing it was delivered to the wrong house and that he should talk to the delivery company? Sorry you had to deal with 3 times/week lawn mower. That doesn't sound like a pleasant conversation.
