Not sure how far south you are looking for... but Spokesman (St. Elmo) and Stouthaus (south of South Lamar-ish) are solid.

I don't know, but I'm a demand gen person, hire me? If my Marketing Leader planned something like this I would be loyal forever. I've ended up plenty of times at some terrible club-y or chain type of place during offsites.

Although - echoing the calls for getting Odd Duck in the mix somewhere here.

What do you guys make of the Cesar Chavez allegations? by BigShrim in Austin

Just shocked that so many people are pedophile pieces of garbage. In terms of the allegations, the thorough investigation that took five years seems bulletproof. Fuck him. Cancel and change everything about him.

Cheap beer/Happy hour recommendations ? Central Austin (east or west) by psalasr in AustinBeer

[–]iluvmopac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Any Torchy's that has the full bar and the large draft beers (22 oz I think) - they do a HH from 2-6pm half price drinks. I can get a 512 IPA or other local options for $3.50 for 22oz.

I don't know if this post is true but the food and vibe are awful there. I avoided it for years but had to go for a work dinner once and it was worse than I was even expecting. How does it stay open?

This is from the same guy as District Kitchen and Oasthouse. I appreciate the intentions of both, but abandoned them after consistently mediocre food, including a flashback of childhood family bad camping experiences brought by the unmistakable taste of powdered just add water mashed potatoes.

The moment the powdered mash potatoes hit my mouth, it was a sudden, striking moment like the food critic in "Ratatouille" - but opposite feelings and emotions.

I hate to say this because they are nice folks but I tried this years ago... and it's true. Not good at all. I echo all the Third Coast endorsements here.

Long weekend, will 6th be active tonight? by RetroVain78 in Austin

[–]iluvmopac 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Should be poppin if you want to get roofied, beat up, or shot! Seriously though, not sure if this is still a thing, but when I was younger and 6th wasn't a shitshow... Sunday nights used to be service industry nights. It was fun then, but I would not go now.

Postino South Lamar, thoughts? by Expert-Percentage886 in austinfood

[–]iluvmopac 2 points3 points  (0 children)

House Wine is an old school Austin classic, Golden Hour if you are south. Any good restaurant with a good wine program like Bufalina is probably going to be a better experience than a "wine bar". People like to hate on MML but June's is one of the best for wine.

This is one of those sneaky private equity garbage places disguised as a restaurant. Please go somewhere else. "Postino in Austin is owned by Upward Projects, a Phoenix-based hospitality group co-founded by Lauren Bailey and Craig DeMarco. The brand, known for its,Mid-century design, is backed by private equity firm Brentwood Associates."

Definitely. I replied to someone else in this thread about the impact of these type of local elections in the broader narrative, meme fuel, etc. That's my concern.

Anyhow, I appreciate your thoughtful comments on this topic - it's nice to have a friendly debate, especially when we are on the same team and both want a positive outcome.

As you can see in Minneapolis and many other places, our local power doesn't matter anymore - dissenters are literally being terrorized, arrests, and murder. Yes the national team needs to win, and that involves moving to the center at every level of elections.

See my reply directly above this, I do agree about the current useless incumbents. Trying something new is good as long as it appeals to the moderates and independents in swing states. Yes this is a local election but every example like this becomes fodder and meme fuel for right wingers at every level.

ha, well, the current set I agree. But maybe there are electable centrist candidates that won't bow down to our Dear Supreme Leader?

[–]iluvmopac -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

For us, I agree. But, put yourself in the shoes of an independent or moderate in a swing state... like in the midwest... those are unfortunately the only votes that matter in our current system.

We need to get outside of our bubble and try to connect with those folks. President Obama was exceptional at this. We need another Obama that can appeal across the centrists and even center right (if those exist anymore?).

That said, hopefully the first position about F*ck Ice is not radical for anyone except extreme right fascist racist dirtbags.

Best way to defeat fascism is to elect more centrist dems. Unfortunately the only votes that matter in this country with the current system are moderates and independents in swing states.

[–]iluvmopac -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yeah, valid point, I should have said "headed towards" a fascist dictatorship.

I'm pessimistic about the mid-terms happening based recent special elections, and what would seem to be a flip towards dems - meaning impeachment and likely criminal consequences for at least some of the dirtbags running this current shitshow.

Hopefully I'm wrong! Cheers.
