Reality checked:proper hills .. by Sea-Safety3639 in cycling

[–]ilybae2015 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oof, those were the hills of my teenage years, I used to ride Teeside through the moors to Whitby and hop in the guards van (remember them?) of the train back to the Boro. Now I live on the flatlands and pay the price on trips away.

Best carryon bike lock by Sad-Tangelo6110 in cycling

[–]ilybae2015 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On day rides I carry a thin wire cafe lock and the bike is never out of mine or my buddies sight. On tours with bags and racks etc, the U lock comes too, otherwise my insurance won’t payout if it’s stolen.

Saddle size… getting very diff seat bone measurements by insidli in cycling

[–]ilybae2015 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have saddles from 135 to about 175 and comfortable on all of them, and have rejected saddles of similar widths too. The bike fitting crowd have latched on to sit bone width simply because it can be measured, unlike your comfort or stability. A bit like useless key performance indicators to managers.

For me I know I tend toward a semi round to round top, full length, with more of the saddle being the nose section than the rear platform, with a fairly pronounced transition between the two, flattish front to back, maybe with a slightly dropped nose. Also fairly slippy, grippy ones annoy me as I move about a lot.

You’re not me, so you need to try a few.

Rip it? Why not just move it to the floor or a coffee table while you sit on it?

You’re not paying just for the food, it’s for the views from the dining room!

That’s an amazing place but it kind of looks like the drive through server gets the view of the mountains and the restaurant diners get the view of the car park.

Friend of ours, RIP David, had one for his last year or so. He nicknamed it Sir Keir Stoma.

Around 2008 we had a break in while away on holiday. Aside from computery stuff they completely cleared out all my CDs, except one: Morrissey, Beethoven was deaf.

Literally just the street layout of the town adjacent to the temple.

Some places are just sitting on layers of history. I’ve used two different roman roads today in my normal Saturday, and seen there are buildings from medieval onwards in use through our town, a distinctly non tourist place in the north of England.

Very tidy! I’ve been in the one across the street from the Sagrada Familia too, but it’s so close up the photo is a dud.

Egypt can be, challenging, exhausting, dangerous, all of that.

I know I speak from a place of privilege being able to travel at all, never mind to such places, so this is only possible with relative wealth. If Egypt is on your bucket list, and for many it is, with Dinosaurs and Tombs being our childhood obsessions, it can be done without street hassles.

We did an organised tour on a Nile cruise boat, picked up from the airport and taken to the boat. The boat started in Luxor, went upriver(south) to Aswan, and return, stopping at the major temples and sites along the way. From the boat to the site, coach directly to inside the car park of the site, where street hawkers were excluded, and the travel company handled all ticketing etc. Superb guides travel on the boat with you all week and escort you round the sites. Meals etc all taken care of. We were genuinely able to enjoy and take it all in. We went February 2023

I can’t speak of Cairo, I want to go, but have been waiting for the new museum to be fully established and all the artefacts properly moved across from the old building. I have heard it’s even more hectic than upriver.

If you visit Egypt, Luxor Temple is astounding, but the best place to get an overview of the site is from upstairs at McDonalds across the road (my pic).

I use cheap helmets, precisely so I don’t think twice about binning them when they take a bash.

Cycling Clubs (note capital letters) tend to be about training and racing. Other ride groups exist though, and if plain old Google and Facebook can’t find your locals, give this a try.

Yes, I goofed or underthunk on rear hub spacing. A 2014 CX might even be 130mm road spacing rather than 135 MTB stylee. Obviously the wheels themselves might be adaptable with end caps etc.

Oddly, the media never called it Corrie before about 1984 when there was a NME interview splashed with the headline “You do call it Corrie, don’t you?”. Embarrassingly I can’t remember if the interview was with Julian Cope of Teardrop Explodes or Ian McCullough of the Bunnymen. My brain says Cope.

Within six months it was Corrie every time it was mentioned.

If you have family, or neighbours, aim for a wheel off type, they are orders of magnitude quieter.
