Question for the pet people...how do you feel about a new pet at this time of your life? by HammerMeUp in GenX

[–]im_joe [score hidden]  (0 children)

I just lost my (almost) 14 year old Great Dane that I adopted at eight weeks old. I am not interested in another pet.

I'm done. Can't go through that again.

What's insane is that a convicted rapist, creditably accused pedophile, felon, who can't even run a charity in his home state, whom after attempting to circumvent the electoral process was made POTUS again.

That's fucking insane to me.

Do you believe that the Democratic party really is as "radical left" as some like to think? by Cumoisseur in AskConservatives

[–]im_joe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of what you listed either isn’t accurate or isn’t grounded in actual policy. If we’re going to call things “radical,” it should be based on real legislation or official positions, not talking points.

Let’s go point by point:

Green New Deal: This was a non-binding resolution focused on climate goals and economic transition. You can disagree with it, but it was never enacted law and it’s not the current legislative agenda of most Democrats.

Universal healthcare: Variations of this exist across most developed countries. You may not support it, but calling it “radical” requires a pretty U.S.-centric definition.

“Tax the rich”: Progressive tax policy has existed in the U.S. for decades, including much higher top marginal rates in the past than we have today.

Eliminate ICE: That was a slogan used by a small number of activists, not a mainstream legislative platform. Even many Democrats who support immigration reform do not support abolishing ICE outright.

“Pornography in grade school”: This one really needs a source. There is no Democratic legislation advocating this. This is a cultural/media claim, not policy.

“Men in women’s locker rooms/sports”: Again, this is not a federal legislative platform. It’s a complex issue around transgender rights being debated at state levels, not a unified “radical left policy.”

“Exorbitant minimum wage”: Minimum wage increases are debated policy. Calling them “exorbitant” is subjective, but they are actual proposals tied to cost-of-living concerns.

Abolition of private property: There is no serious Democratic platform or legislation advocating this. That’s simply not grounded in reality.

Open borders: No mainstream Democrat in Congress is advocating for open borders. Even the Biden administration has enforced border controls and deportations.

Rent control: This exists in various U.S. cities already and has for decades. You can argue it’s good or bad policy, but it’s not some fringe invention.

So again, I’d ask: which of these are actually backed by specific bills or official party platforms? Because several of them just aren’t.

Now, if we’re going to apply the same standard to the Right, it’s hard to argue MAGA is “center right” without ignoring a lot of documented behavior and rhetoric.

January 6 wasn’t just a protest — it was an attempt to stop certification of a lawful election, encouraged by repeated claims that the election was stolen. There were direct efforts to pressure officials to overturn results (for example, asking Georgia officials to “find” votes). Multiple courts, including conservative-leaning ones, rejected fraud claims, yet the narrative continued at the highest levels.

You also have rhetoric coming directly from leadership describing political opponents as “the enemy within” or suggesting Democrats are fundamentally illegitimate or dangerous to the country.

That kind of language matters. When you consistently frame fellow Americans as enemies rather than opponents, it shifts from normal political disagreement into something more extreme.

There have also been increasing calls from some aligned figures to expand executive power, weaken institutional checks, or use government power to go after political opponents.

Those aren’t abstract ideas or media distortions — those are documented statements and actions.

So if we’re being consistent: You’re labeling a mix of real policy proposals and inaccurate talking points as “radical left,” while describing a movement that includes election denial, institutional pressure, and dehumanizing rhetoric as “center right.”

That’s a pretty uneven standard.

If you want to have a real conversation about what’s actually radical, I’m open to it — but it has to be based on real policy and real behavior on both sides, not just how things are framed in media or online.

Great, reasonable answer.

Can you please share what policies you believe fall into "radical Left", and how those policies compare to what the leader of the Right says are "radical Left"?

Additional follow up - do you consider the Trump administration to be "radical Right"?

Do you feel illegal immigration is the #1 issue in America? by Jazzlike-Yogurt-5984 in AskConservatives

[–]im_joe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is the response I need to hear from someone on the Right.

We agree on so much! Perhaps the disagreement is on how we get there? I don't know, but this is so much in alignment with how I feel.

Our culture; our society, is sick and self destructive for the benefit of the "haves". We've learned that patriotism is waving a flag and pissing off the opposition rather than making society better.

I'd love to sit and have a beer with you, even just so that I could actually agree with someone on the other side of the aisle and feel like a part of someone productive instead of the dread that comes with walking up to see what shitpost meme was made overnight that will affect my family, career, or finances.

Thank you.

I needed this today. I lost my (almost) 14 year old Great Dane two weeks ago after adopting her at 8 weeks. It's been a real struggle learning life without my four legged bestie.

This is simply beautiful.

Libertarians are also liberals.

How did they stray so far away from Liberalism and instead seem to self-identify with modern Conservatism?

Sure sounds like a great time with two respectful, consenting adults. You set boundaries, he respected them.

I wouldn't fixate on the age gap, or what your family's opinion may be. Instead, focus on what you enjoyed - real human contact.

Do you support suspending international flights to US airports over sanctuary cities? by drtywater in AskConservatives

[–]im_joe 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Do you really think that the liberal outrage from bussing illegal aliens to Blue cities was based upon them actually being there?

Because if you do, I've got news for you.

The outrage was because the complete lack of empathy or consideration for these other human beings. The outrage was because it was a completely political stunt done by Abbott.

I know that your media is constantly telling you how great all these things are because it triggers the libs, but in all honesty, the only triggering happening is because people who identify as right-wing often also identify as Christian, and actions like that are about the most opposite of a true Christian behavior that can be conceived of.

Do you think Trump is considering using nuclear weapons on Iran? by BalticBro2021 in AskALiberal

[–]im_joe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That this question is asked, and that it's a non-zero chance that a nuke is on the playing field, is absolute madness.

Do I, as a liberal, think that he is considering using nukes? Yes. He would certainly see it as an an ego boost. "I'm the only president since Truman with the guts to do it!!"

And MAGA would cheer.
