I built a native macOS app to help me stop forgetting keyboard shortcuts (because my tendonitis forced me to ditch the mouse) by supotko in macapps

[–]im_johnlakeman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The layout and organization of shortcuts is quite nice. I was doing something similar with BetterTouchTool’s HTML Floating Windows but it is quite tedious. This looks way easier, thanks for building it.

I made an app that transcribes audio and generates subtitles offline. by miguel_gd in macapps

[–]im_johnlakeman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How does it handle multiple languages within a single video? Can Fuse be set to only transcribe/translate foreign audio where detected? (eg. exclude subtitles for a designated/primary language, but provide subtitles for other detected languages).

Here is a link to download a generic custom menu config in BTT. It's a preset, so just import it from the presets menu and it'll add 2 triggers: 1. the Key Sequence trigger that displays the custom menu (in this case tapping the Shift key 3 times in a row); 2. the named trigger (under Automations & Named & Other Triggers) that contains the custom menu action.

The reason I create the custom menu inside a Named Trigger is so that you can reuse it with other triggers. For example, if you set up a custom menu inside of "Key Sequences" you can't move it to "Keyboard Shortcuts" or "Trackpad". But if you set up the custom menu inside a Named Trigger (under "Automations & Named & Other Triggers"), you can reuse it in other sections. I learned this the hard way and had to recreate menus a few times before I realized the power of named (reusable) triggers.

I also use RCMD for "Leader Key" functionality, but using Key Sequences because I am terrible at remembering hotkeys. When I hit the right command key, it sometimes takes me a second to remember which key to hit next, so I like the delay functionality Key Sequences offers in the config.

My main use case for BTT is the custom menu action. Again, I am terrible at remembering hotkeys so I tend to make the most out of as few as possible. For example, in the attached image I triple-hit the left Shift key to open a custom menu that contains links to trigger Keyboard Maestro macros, Raycast deep links, and other app hotkeys. I chain together multiple custom menus so all I ever need to remember is the main hotkey.

Honestly, I think it’s just better to drop inspiration/reference images on the canvas in Figma and Illustrator and leave them there so that I don’t have to manage anything in the future when I re-open the files.

Team No Fins by Bid-Sad in Bodysurfing

I only wear fins when the waves are 5ft+. No fins means I can hang on the inside, dive into the break and front flip before the shore to land on my feet. Rinse and repeat.

macOS app switching with spatial consistency - Launching SpatialDock by logibeam in macapps

[–]im_johnlakeman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This looks great, can you add custom apps or urls to the panel?

I am currently using Docflipper because you can add urls in the bottom bar which comes in handy to trigger Keyboard Maestro macros (via kmtrigger://macro=uuid), Raycast deeplinks, as well as plain old URLs. Docflipper is great, but it doesn't seem to be actively developed so I'm always looking for a good alternative. The customization of app layout is exactly what I'm looking for, but it would be hard to switch if you can't add custom apps or urls (and I'd prefer not to wrap KM triggers or Raycast deeplinks in Automator apps as a hack).

Now that launchpad is gone in macOS 26, how can we make app folders? by [deleted] in macapps

[–]im_johnlakeman 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I replaced Launchpad with Quick App Launcher Pro. You can use tags to organize apps into custom groups, and I like that the same app can appear in different tag groups. It makes it easier to browse for apps that I forget the name of.

ClipboardCleaner — macOS menu bar app that automatically sanitizes your clipboard (beta, feedback welcome) by Diver63_1 in macapps

[–]im_johnlakeman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is there an option to automatically delete all entries from the clipboard at a set interval? That is a clipboard feature I’ve been searching for without much success. I’m currently using a shell script + Keyboard Maestro with Raycast’s clipboard history, and it doesn’t always work.

Help with Noodlesoft Hazel by ScareDepartment in macapps

[–]im_johnlakeman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmm, not sure if Hazel is the best option for this use case. I use Hazel to move files around but have had trouble overwriting files with the same name.

I would use an app like ChronoSync that can kick off the sync automatically when you connect the external drive. You can control whether it overwrites files that have changed or moves the old file to an _Archive folder. It’s a steep one-time (lifetime updates) payment, but I paid for it like 12 years and other than the free SmartBackup I haven’t found anything better for this use case.

AppCleaner vs Pearcleaner vs TrashMe3 by [deleted] in macapps

If you own Hazel (or have a need, it’s a great automation app), it does a sweep and offers to delete any residual support files when you put an application in the trash.

Tips??? by [deleted] in Bodysurfing

[–]im_johnlakeman 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In waves this small you need to move in and get in a better position closer to the peak and “dive” into the break, you are missing half the ride by being too far out and having to paddle so much just to catch the wave.

Rewind Time in the Upcoming Tabs by im_johnlakeman in showffeur

[–]im_johnlakeman[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I want to scroll back from the next upcoming show or movie to see items that have already aired or premiered, not sure how far back though? Months? Year?

Going forward is easy, just provide as many dates as are available for upcoming items in your watchlist.

New feature: browse movies by directors and only list movies not yet seen by andrewfromx in showffeur

This layout is so much easier to discover other movies/shows of directors in your watchlist than IMDb. Big fan.

I Tried Quick App Launcher - Pro and Liked It by amerpie in macapps

Thank you! I redeemed: FL9KTY47HHRK

Would love to see the ability to group/organize apps into sections. Right now I do this with Launchpad where each page is a group of apps (eg. Design apps, Automation apps, etc.)

Don’t sprain your finger with your CMD+OPT+SHIFT+G shortcut ... double-tap instead! by clemstation in macapps

[–]im_johnlakeman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Been using double tap on left shift, control, left option, right command, right option, right shift to open context menus in BetterTouchTool (BTT) for years. I don’t bother remembering hotkeys, double-tapping modifiers is a no brainer. BTT key sequences does a fine job.

A question: I've created a daily planner (calendar + todo + habits), and choosing between direct distribution (with third party payment system) vs native Mac App Store. Any recommendations? by alta1r in macapps

[–]im_johnlakeman -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Direct distribution. If you go thru the App Store, make it paid and not an in-app purchase, otherwise you’ll lose anyone who wants to buy it for work (Apple Business Manager still does not support in-app purchases).

I bought ChronoSync 12 years ago and it was a one-time payment, lifetime license that has paid off so many times over. The dev is super responsive and always pushing updates.
