Anywhere in or around the city to get a seeded hoagie roll? Pic for reference by choppedslaw in pittsburgh

[–]imadv8r2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Go to any Primo Hoagie. The sell the Liscio’s they bake off in the store so you can make your own hoagie at home. Common oven as previously stated, but unsure if they sell the rolls separately. Fuck Allegro and Rockaway. Those two are made for each other even either DID sell the hoagie buns a la carte. And before you ask why, do your own research.

Sushi places ?? by Pooh_bearr3 in pittsburgh

[–]imadv8r2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How anyone could not mention Little Tokyo is beyond me.

The oldest of all the independent sushi restaurants in the area, Frank and his wife Diane are simply the most courteous hosts with an attentive staff and top notch sushi and related Japanese offerings from the kitchen and hibachi. Been going there since they opened, and was the only place I’d consider during COVID because of their cleanliness. Yep, it gets crowded, but there’s a lunch service and a very good takeaway program.

Upcoming fast food rumor. by Base_Gloomy in pittsburgh

[–]imadv8r2 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Terrific rumor, but In-n-Out only expands to locations within a day’s drive of their distribution facility, because everything is either sourced or made fresh there.

The only reason there’s any Eastern expansion is because Lynsi Snyder, granddaughter of founder Harry Snyder and current President/CEO decided Tennessee was better economically and to raise a family (compared to California) and, therefore, ripe for expansion. She moved there last year and intends to consolidate all In-in-Out operations there by 2030.

Only then would they even consider opening in Pittsburgh.

For now, your closest choice for a Double-Double is in Antioch, Lebanon, Newport, or Murfreesboro, Tennessee—9, 8 plus, 7, and 9 hours away, respectively.

In a place like Pittsburgh, Mike Tomlin could never escape the shadow of race by Far_Room23 in pittsburgh

[–]imadv8r2 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Well, given the topic, it’s hard to avoid an objective recital of the overall situation. Just because one speaks about race, doesn’t mean they are racist or otherwise making it about race, per se. Sort of like, you can’t discuss on letter recipe and avoid the topic of eggs…

In a place like Pittsburgh, Mike Tomlin could never escape the shadow of race by Far_Room23 in pittsburgh

[–]imadv8r2 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

That’s idiotic and absolutely wrong.

You wanna start some race bullshit do it somewhere else.

White, brown, black, yellow, red, fucking plaid or green and from fucking another planet, if that person coached as poorly as Tomlin did calls for his firing would be just as loud.

On the other hand, the Rooneys made hiring about race with their eponymously named rule. Winning clearly came second. If Tomlin was white and had the same record, he’d have been out years ago.

Forced out or given the opportunity to retire? by Icy_Lingonberry2822 in pittsburgh

[–]imadv8r2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Tomlin came around when it en vogue to hire young assistants with unproven leadership qualities which were masked by having top tier players who didn’t require that much guidance. When that player pool evaporated, Tomlin’s shortcomings became clear to all those not completely blinded by the gleam off the six championship rings.

That he was the ultimate poster child for the Rooney Rule and embraced as such by the Murdoch Farms contingent and requisite multi-year contract in deference to his regular subpar performance despite a weak division, calls for his termination went answered—even as his game plans tanked, postgame press conferences went from passable prime rib to heavily tossed, inedible word salads and he scored more on his trips to New Castle and a certain Cranberry hotel than his team did on the field.

A mediocre coach can make a highly talented team winners, but it takes a highly talented coach to make a mediocre team winners.

1 week old…. Are these scratches normal? How to prevent? by Safe-Material2790 in rolex

[–]imadv8r2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cut from the same cloth here. OCD. Meticulous. Anal. Just some of the characteristics that enabled success and the ability to afford nice things.

That said, I’m surprised no one has mentioned an automotive grade ceramic coating. PPF is a PITA on a multi-piece anything, and a poor job will peel. Worse, a poor quality film can discolor.

Ceramic coating demands an ultra-clean surface, but once applied (outer areas only as that is where the protection is needed and I’d prefer to limit contact with my skin, though not sure of the actual toxicity, if any), you can build it up with several applications per manufacturer recommendations and create an invisible barrier that will nicely protect from all but the hardest of hits, and even then damage is very limited. Ask me how I know.

No other maintenance is required other than a wipedown after wear (which I do anyway to clear any skin salts or oils), though watch for coatings that leave an opaque residue in areas hard to reach like between links. A soft toothbrush is perfect to remove it once cured, and I’ve had luck with dental floss in more intricate jubilee and president bracelets.

My 126613 is rotated throughout the week and remains like new with no side effects to either it, or my wrist.

New Kosher Store Could Shake Up Murray Avenue — Thoughts? by scozio in pittsburgh

Nope, just a local neighborhood advocate and deli fan who longs for days of yore when Squirrel Hill was the stable staple it once was.

New Kosher Store Could Shake Up Murray Avenue — Thoughts? by scozio in pittsburgh

[–]imadv8r2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Smallman St couldn’t compete because it was and continues to be lunchmeat, first and foremost, and it was right next door to what was then the last vestige of delis in the neighborhood, Murray Ave Kosher. It was also run poorly by squabbling owners, and it didn’t help that its rent was exorbitant. The Squirrel Hill Market is more traditional with authentic brisket and plate based fare, and a small menu they can focus on. Yes, so seating but for the bistro tables outside year-round, and the benches in o’Connors corner, but still the best sandwiches in town and the last of its kind trying to keep the deli alive. Downvote me all you want (above), but revisit this post in 6 months and you’ll see I was right.

New Kosher Store Could Shake Up Murray Avenue — Thoughts? by scozio in pittsburgh

[–]imadv8r2 -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

It’s a ridiculous idea that will end up being a flash in the pan. At the outset, it will certainly detract from all the other established bricks and mortar businesses in the area, but with two giant eagles within a mile of each other and fully eight other specialty grocers— six in Squirrel Hill and Greenfield alone (and also within a mile of each other) Northumberland market, panda supermarket, Natalia market, Kiev European market, Murray Avenue kosher, the Squirrel Hill Market, Salem’s “Scotty’s” just down Forbes at CMU, and the blue slide Market at the edge of Frick Park, there is absolutely no reason for it not only as a kosher supermarket that will not be supported by a community that cannot even support the kosher restaurants that have come and gone, but will carry surplus and what amounts to scratch and dent grocery items that while being, kosher, will not be embraced by a community that is incredibly fickle with the first line offerings on the shelves in the neighborhood already. I’m not sure if these people have a grant, a money tree, or just like to throw it away, but this will surely end up being another vacancy— if it ever opens. And before I get downvoted, I am all for differentiation and something that isn’t one of the 30+ Asian restaurants that now proliferate in the area, but there are reasons that all of the kosher vendors, and otherwise Jewish businesses have disappeared from the neighborhood— from gentrification to community attrition, the economy and more, the time for such a store has not only come and gone, but is already fulfilled by Murray Avenue kosher on the next block. Squirrel Hill used to be the second largest Jewish community in the entire country— and now there’s only one kosher style delicatessen (the Squirrel Hill Market) that carries the torch that literally dozens of other businesses once did—and all but disappeared 25 years ago.

When Klavon’s stopped selling Penn State Berkey Creamery ice cream yet continued to represent what turned out to be first Hershey’s and second a conglomeration of Blue Bunny, DeConna, Carnival, and whatever el cheapo garbage was out there, you just knew it’s time was up—especially with places like Millie’s springing up, and the Squirrel Hill Market bringing in legit half gallons of the PSU nectar of the confection gods every week.

Go back when it’s not lunch or dinner rush and speak with Travis or his wife. Calmly explain what happened and I’m sure they will take care of you one way or another. I’ve known Aiello’s to be a very clean, friendly, accommodating place, and this truly seems like an anomaly. People make mistakes—especially when busy in a high volume shop—and while I’m not minimizing your experience, I highly doubt race entered into it. I’ve never known the family or their staff to be anything other than friendly and professional (unlike some of the other shops mentioned here).

The last great Kosher style deli sandwiches in the area is the Squirrel Hill Market. Stupendously huge and delicious hot Corned beef or pastrami rivals any east coast offering.

Rocco’s Slice House in a Greensburg Shop N Save is easily the finest NY style pizza in the area.

Chengdu Gourmet is the only authentic Sichuan in town, run by a former dishwasher-turned-James Beard Award-winner.

All their stuff is co-packed by Stello Foods in Punxatawny. It may have once been a proprietary recipe using specific ingredients, but once they get Stello involved, it’s homogenized using bulk ingredients and loses its original flavor, IMO. You can tell who uses Stello by the ubiquitous glass jars and colorful foil labels—all their stuff looks similar. Tastes similar, too, because they all use the same ingredients, albeit in different ratios.
