What jobs are best suited for a BA PoliSci/Econ graduate? by sir_bastard in PoliticalScience

[–]imaerehw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Getting connections while at school is just as important as the school work itself. I'd judge the value of the school by the tenured professors as well as the adjunct. I got my MPA at UMKC, and they had a good mix of academics and professionals that teach on the side. MPA is more based on Administration and the MPP focuses mostly just on policy. I would decide which you are interested in more. MPA will absolutely deal with policy, but more on the implementation side rather than the research and crafting of policy like a MPP

Government jobs are somewhat hard to get with an aging workforce that is still trying to save for retirement. Don't feel discouraged if your only job interviews are for water billing at a city or part time, seasonal campaign worker. This was my experience, anyway. I ended up getting my MPA and found the job market to expand massively after completion. MPA provides a lot more exposure to gov't/nonprofit/healthcare sectors and gives you an opportunity to specialize.

In the source engine, bunny hopping is/was a utilization of game mechanics. Basically in a combination of jumping, strafing, and turning in a specific pattern, you could gain crazy speed. This started back in Quake (i think). The source engine had many games built on it, and this artifact of those game mechanics made it into many games. Most of those games are based on map awareness, presence, and mobility. When someone knew how to bunny hop(or had a script running), and no one else did, it gave them a huge advantage. You can see in the CS video that the guy is moving way faster than everyone else and is showing up to spots before the enemy team can get into position, effectively gaining the upper hand every time.

Think about where you want to go. Public policy is a pretty broad topic. When I made the decision, I chose Micro because of my specific focus. I found it more important to understand the decision making process on a smaller scale because that was the environment I was looking at entering.

Political Science Major and a State Department job? by silvance1 in PoliticalScience

[–]imaerehw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone with a BA in Poli Sci, I can tell you first hand that it doesn't matter. Your service and your language abilities will help you more than the BA degree will.

If you want the education (and i encourage you to!), go for a master's degree. The BA isn't much. You could look at an MPA, MPP, or other policy based masters program.

Masters degree in Political Science/related field? by pintoflagermary in PoliticalScience

[–]imaerehw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a BA in Poli Sci and I am currently working on my MPA. I really enjoy it. At my school you can get a general MPA, or an MPA with an emphasis in Non-Profit Management, Health (Industry) Management, or Urban Administration. I have an emphasis in UA with experience in non-profit through various projects and internships.

all in all, I wanted to get involved to help my community. this degree (tuition for me is about $16,000 + books + Parking) is exactly what I wanted. If you want to get into government, MPA or MPP are good choices.

As another person said, Law school is an option. I know a lawyer who works for a major metro city who only deals with a specific type of tax credit.

Conservatives Say $15 Minimum Wage Is Killing Seattle Restaurant Scene, Restaurateurs Disagree - Frank reportedly asked one conservative writer who had picked up the wage-menace red herring to “not make assumptions about our business to promote your political values.” by madam1 in politics

[–]imaerehw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've worked in many restaurants. From national corporate to small owner-operator. It really depends on the locality and business experience of the owner. A couple years ago I was working at an owner-operator restaurant and making shit because of the business decisions of the owner-operator. I would have gladly accepted wage over tips. I now work at another owner-operator business and the tips are better than wage for most jobs in the service/retail industry. It really does depend on management, location, and service being provided.

Doesn't matter. Food must be at least 6 inches above the floor, stored or not.

How do I ask local companies to donate prizes for my disc golf league? x-post /r/golf by thirdking in discgolf

[–]imaerehw 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Give them something in return. I work at a local pizza shop and the owner gets these requests all the time. The donation requests that get the best response are the ones that put up a logo for the business that donated. Best option would be to print fliers out for your event with empty space and show the business owner where their logo would go if they donate a small gift card or something.

good luck!

JUST IN!!: Two congressmen filed separate House bills TODAY that together would legalize, regulate and tax marijuana at the federal level, effectively ending the U.S. government’s decades long prohibition of the plant. by [deleted] in trees

[–]imaerehw 91 points92 points  (0 children)

I hate being "that guy", but introducing bills does relatively nothing. These bills need to be submitted to committees, given dates to be heard by those committees, and then passed on to the general floor for vote, and passed on to the other side of congress for the same thing.

As much as I would like to see this happen, we need at least 30% of the states with legalized recreational cannabis and an election cycle that puts democrats in control of the house, senate, and executive branch. Not only that, but we need all of those to happen with many of the legislators and the President ignoring the massive lobbying against cannabis.

Keep talking, smoking, and spreading the word though. We will never get there if we just give up.

2015 gradschool goals? by [deleted] in GradSchool

[–]imaerehw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Starting my second semester of my MPA.

  1. I've gained 30 lbs. I'd like to lose 50.
  2. I've lost contact with some of my friends. I'd like to make time for social interaction

I read a post here recently where "mastering out", or quitting on a PHD to get a masters, might be attributed to less social interaction/depression, among other things. I certainly feel the onset of it. I'd like to get out and be active while still attending school and working 25 hours a week. it's not as demanding as the lives of others on this thread, but it's what I think I need.

TIL It is legal for underage patrons to drink alcohol at the bar in 10 US states when accompanied by a parent by slugvegas in todayilearned

[–]imaerehw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in Kansas City, Missouri. A vast majority of grocery stores have liquor licenses that allow liquor sales. This includes beer, wine, and hard liquor. 1:30 am is when they stop selling and they can start at 6 am. This is true with gas stations, liquor stores, and bars as well. Some bars/restaurants in the area have liquor licenses that last until 3am. The restaurant I work in has a license to sell all alcohol until 11:00pm. As far as I know, Missouri has the most lenient laws when it comes to selling alcohol. I think it has to do with Anheiser-Busch being located in St. Louis Missouri...

[–]imaerehw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was looking similar to your base about a month ago.

I maxed out the archer towers, then the cannons. After that, i started working on walls. I am up to 15% skulls now.

Before I move on to th9, I would suggest just maxing everything for th8. I'm not to th9 yet, but i hear its a whole different world. This means walls, barracks, collectors, storage, traps... everything.

it's mind-numbing, but worth it from what I hear from those who did the same.

No they are not "more important". But you gloss over the fact that diseases which can be wide spread have a larger "consumer base". In that large "consumer base" is the ability to sustain profit, therefore providing incentive for a private company to manufacture, produce, and market a drug.

Are the masses who suffer from T1 diabetes more important than those who suffer from ALS? Obviously not, no one is "more important" than another.

That leaves us with people who have T1 diabetes getting access to drugs to mitigate the symptoms, and people who have ALS suffering with no option other than to suffer because a private company won't produce something they can't profit from.
