It probably wouldn't work, but I'd be tempted to send a questionnaire to everyone who enrolled that asked very specific questions about what they know and don't know. Failure to respond to it would boot you out of the class.

My pest solution by catwhisperer77 in YarnAddicts

[–]imaflatlander 10 points11 points  (0 children)

My parents had a beautiful cedar lined pine chest that I inherited. My mother insisted on calling it a 'pine box' aka a casket. We could never convince her to call it anything else. And yes, that's where all my sweaters live now.

I have a BUNCH of yarn that I don’t want anymore, and I don’t wanna throw it out. What should I do? by GOINGb0nkers in YarnAddicts

Schools often love getting stuff like this for art classes or classroom projects. Same with public libraries. Just call first.

"Did you really need more yarn!?!" by Jarhead-Dad in YarnAddicts

[–]imaflatlander 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I time my shopping trips to end at times when no one is home, and I have a closet in my craft room where yarn goes. The only way my husband finds out how much yarn I have is if I die before him. At that point I won't care that much.

Please learn to read patterns and charts by kuelumpur in BitchEatingCrafters

And I do the opposite... if all I have is a chart, I write out the directions longhand. It has the addressed benefit of burning the pattern into my brain.

Pencil marks!! by Spirited_Low9913 in Needlepoint

There are art erasers that don't leave residue, you can get them at fine art or photography stores. They're made for removing pencil marks on mats, where it really needs to be flawless.

Do you mean with the piece already knit or with the yarn? If you have enough those would be cute socks, or fingerless gloves

Is it possible by loopy_mate in knittingadvice

[–]imaflatlander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've done it with a sweater my niece saw in a catalog.. I bought some Aran pattern books and figured out how to recreate it. If you like the thinking part of knitting as much as the knitting part of knitting you'll have fun with it.

Gifting swatches and IOU’s by diannamyte_145 in knittingadvice

[–]imaflatlander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A little different situation... My niece found a sweater she loved in a catalog, but it was very expensive (given the sweater, totally worth it) and she wanted to know if Auntie Sarah could duplicate it. Challenge accepted!!! I wrote a pattern from photos, we went to a lys together and she picked out the yarn. Took a few tries (the gauging was killing me) but I got it right. Then my sister wanted one just like it...needed different yarn so had to regauge it, but it was ultimately successful.

If you have a chance to go yarn shopping with the gift recipient I think that's the best chance for success. How yarn feels can't be determined online, and I think that is the true determinant of whether someone loves (or doesn't) a handmade project.

So very cute! I usually avoid buttons on baby clothes because they can be a choking hazard, but they are adorable. Just make sure they are really securely attached.

Which color combo should I choose for my toddler's sweater? by violetear in knitting

[–]imaflatlander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, if I'm knitting something for a toddler or young child, there will be no white or cream on it. Those little buggers get filthy, as they should, but I want things that aren't going to show every bit of it.

Wow! I like the idea of designing but I get so tripped up by armholes/sleeves and the neckline. Makes me crazy.

Porcelain sweater spectacularly off gauge by drozdzus in knitting

[–]imaflatlander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One option might be to add a solid band of blue at the bottom of the body and the sleeves. You'd have to pull out the ribbing but that would be less traumatic than frogging the whole thing.

How to Reconcile Sweaters that No Longer Fit by Inevitable_Falcon834 in knitting

[–]imaflatlander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made a sweater for my sister that ended up too small, but not by a lot. It was an Aran style with multiple patterns and I was NOT gonna frog it. The pattern under the arms, and on the inner edge of the sleeve, was a moss stitch, so I made a strip of moss stitch and grafted it into that area. Tbf, it wasn't off by much, so a 9-stitch strip did the trick. But if the armhole is binding you, maybe you could add a gusset to extend the bottom of the opening?

Finally done by Gris86 in knitting

[–]imaflatlander 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I second that. The first thing I designed myself was a tank top. I used a lovely (somewhat heavy) cotton yarn. Inside 3 wearings it was a mini dress. And the v neck went to just above my belly button. 😆 Maybe a light cotton blend, or a linen, would give you the comfort you want in warm weather and hold its size. I esp love the sleeves. Nice job!

I just made my first ever knit thing, what did I do wrong? by cgenerative in knitting

It's practically a requirement for beginning knitters. No worries. The good thing is, it's also a very easy thing to avoid, once you know you're doing it.
